The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

By L. Frank Baum

A cyclone lifts a small Kansas farmhouse off the prairie with Dorothy, an orphan girl, and her little dog Toto inside, and sets it down in the Land of Oz, a country of witches and talking creatures ringed by desert. The house comes down on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her, and the grateful Munchkins and the Witch of the North give Dorothy the dead witch's silver shoes. All Dorothy wants is to get home to Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, and the only one said to be powerful enough to help is Oz, the Great Wizard, who rules from the City of Emeralds at the centre of the country. She sets off along the road paved with yellow brick, and on the way gathers companions with wishes of their own: a Scarecrow who wants brains, a Tin Woodman who wants a heart and a Lion who wants courage. L. Frank Baum's 1900 fairy tale is the first of his Oz books.
