A figure made of straw whom Dorothy finds fastened to a pole beside the road. He can speak and move once she helps him down, but believes that his stuffed head leaves him without a brain. He joins the journey to ask Oz for one.

A woodsman whose body is made entirely of tin. Dorothy and the Scarecrow discover him rusted motionless and restore his joints with an oil can. He fears that losing his flesh also cost him his heart, so he accompanies them to ask Oz for one.

A large lion who frightens the travelers on the road but admits that he considers himself a coward. Ashamed that fear governs him despite his strength, he joins Dorothy's party in the hope that Oz can give him courage.

The ruler of the field mice. After the travelers save her from a wildcat, she commands her many subjects to help pull the sleeping Lion out of the deadly poppy field.

The secluded ruler of the Emerald City, believed by its residents to possess extraordinary magic. He receives Dorothy and each of her companions separately in a different imposing form, then says he will grant their requests only if they destroy the Wicked Witch of the West.

The feared ruler of the western country. She watches Dorothy's party approach, sends successive forces to stop them, and especially covets the powerful silver shoes Dorothy wears.
