Joe (Protagonist)
Also known as Major General Pyrrhic, Master Coordinator
Appears from the start
A master-ranked ritual worker and Ritual Architect based in Novusheim. Joe is redirecting harmful rituals toward practical ends, but the Expert cleansing ritual he has just earned cannot be safely inscribed until he develops the forging skill and materials to contain it.
Daniela (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A returning associate who supports Novusheim's growth and defenses. She proposes a specialized bowyer workshop and an elemental playground to provide the settlement with useful businesses and stronger ranged protection.
Jaxon (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Joe's returning party member, chiropractor, and combat researcher. At the start of this book, Jaxon has also joined Novusheim's local theatre, although the production appears to be using him more as part of the scenery than as a conventional performer.
Expert dwarf smith (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A highly skilled smith whom Joe hires as a personal tutor in ritualistic forging. He guides Joe through the demanding work of making an athame and teaches that successful craft requires attention to the nature and intent of the material itself.
Havoc (Supporting)
Also known as Grandmaster Havoc
First appears in chapter 3
Joe's Grandmaster mentor and the enchanter under whom he openly claims apprenticeship. Joe invokes that affiliation during a contentious council meeting, where the connection carries significant weight.
Grandmaster Snow (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
A Grandmaster and leading council authority in Novusheim. She approves Daniela's proposed bowyer workshop, but makes its construction conditional on Joe first creating a prison capable of containing exceptionally dangerous captives, including Joe himself.
Master Frenzy (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
A member of Novusheim's council who opposes using designs derived from the elves. His resistance places him against Daniela's infrastructure proposal during the settlement's debate over how to prepare for the dangers involved in becoming a city.
Socar (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
A mage responsible for formation work around Novusheim's ritual towers. When a newly completed central tower begins to sway, Socar recognizes that its motion creates a problem for the surrounding formation and calls for immediate stabilization.
Heartpiercer McShootypants (Minor)
First appears in chapter 8
An allied archer expected to help defend Novusheim during its city-advancement trial. Joe receives a powerful bow made with cyclops sinew for her, giving the settlement a ranged combatant equipped for the increasingly dangerous monster waves.
The princess (Minor)
First appears in chapter 10
A former acquaintance of Joe who applies to train as a ritualist in his new coven. Joe insists that she perform her own astronomy-based ritual mapping instead of delegating it, while also confronting her over having concealed her presence on Jotunheim.
Bowman (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
A dwarf whose Neophyte class has kept his skills at Student rank and prevented a class change for centuries. After Bowman completes several ritual assignments, Joe recognizes his unusual growth potential, accepts him as a direct disciple, and sends him to study alchemy.
Jake (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
An alchemist associated with the Pyramid of Panacea. Joe trusts Jake to train Bowman in alchemy while the new disciple exploits the accelerated learning available through his Neophyte class, making Jake part of the broader effort to develop Novusheim's specialists.
Pseudo-lich (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 15
Joe’s summoned combat companion, linked to the ritual orb of constitution. Joe restores the pseudo-lich after a Grandmaster destroyed its earlier orb, then calls it forth before joining Novusheim’s defense during the tenth wave.
Major Cleavage (Supporting)
Also known as Captain Cleavage
First appears in chapter 18
A Legion officer, former party member of Joe, and commander involved in Novusheim's wall defenses. She confronts Joe about the dangerous ring of heat flora, then publicly accepts his explanation and announces council-backed expeditions through his travel network.
Coffee elemental (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 22
Joe's summoned elemental companion, linked to a mug and centered on coffee. As Joe searches for an answer to the approaching legendary threat, the elemental asks to become the focus of an Expert planar-shift ritual that would empower both it and the surrounding battlefield.
Razor Scarf (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 27
A metropolis-ranked polar polecat that serves as the approaching giant's living scarf-like garment. The giant throws Razor Scarf toward Novusheim after offering the defenders one chance to flee, turning the creature into the settlement's next immediate threat.
The giant (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 21
A colossal unknown figure first seen in the distance during Novusheim's city-advancement trial. Its scale makes it resemble a mountain where none should exist, and its arrival introduces a threat far beyond what the defenders expect at this stage of settlement growth.
The frost giant (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 34
The immense final boss previously seen approaching Novusheim, now recognizable through its command of extreme cold. As wave one hundred draws closer, it launches an attack that freezes Joe's elevated fog into a vast shield and solidifies thousands of monsters.
Grandmaster smith (Minor)
First appears in chapter 37
A Grandmaster smith and enchanter who is also Havoc's brother. When the frost giant hurls an enormous ice javelin at Novusheim, he counters with a refining ability that accelerates toward an immense number of precise strikes each second.
Imprisoned Master (Minor)
First appears in chapter 44
A sarcastic Master held in title-locked restraints under a community-service sentence. Joe offers to release him from that obligation if he will use Jaxon's communication link to provoke the frost giant and weaken its focus during the siege.
