To Flail Against Infinity

By J. P. Valentine

The first book in The Stargazer's War opens on the remote refueling station Rufi, where vac welder Cal works alongside his older brother Brady. When a cultivator arrives suffering from void-induced psychosis, he kills the crew and drains Cal near to death, but Cal wakes with an unfamiliar energy no cultivator can perceive. Rescued by the sentient ship Lucy, he begins learning to cultivate this quiet, void-born Qi in secret, then travels with her to the Dueling Stars to seek formal instruction. Admitted to the Dragon's Right Eye sect on Firion as a low-status adult cadet, Cal hides the true nature of his Qi while navigating a hierarchy built on mandatory duels, working to open his meridians and build alliances despite starting at the bottom of the ranks.
