A paisano from Tortilla Flat who returns from military service to learn that his grandfather has left him two small houses. Previously accustomed to sleeping outdoors, drinking when he can, and avoiding property, he suddenly becomes a landlord and the center of a growing household of friends.

Danny's clever, persuasive friend, skilled at turning self-interest into an argument about loyalty or charity. He becomes Danny's tenant without possessing a dependable income and soon begins constructing arrangements that pass the obligation to pay rent onward.
