Trapped: The Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 5 recap

After years in hiding, Atticus O'Sullivan brings Granuaile MacTiernan's apprenticeship to its final stage while the consequences of killing Thor continue to spread. Loki is free, relations with the Irish gods remain strained, and emerging from concealment allows old enemies to locate the Druids. Granuaile must be bound to the earth before attacks by hostile supernatural powers stop the process. She succeeds and becomes a full Druid, then begins using her new abilities alongside Atticus rather than behind him. Their most immediate enemy is Bacchus, who seeks revenge for the destruction of his followers in Arizona and drives a series of attacks meant to trap them. Atticus ultimately kills Bacchus, but the victory does not end the Olympian danger: Artemis and Diana answer the death by turning their hunt toward Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon. The trio survives with Granuaile's training complete, yet remains caught between the unfinished Norse crisis and a new divine pursuit.

Previously, Atticus O'Sullivan killed the Irish god Aenghus Og and accepted Granuaile MacTiernan as his apprentice. He later honored a debt to vampire Leif Helgarson by joining an expedition into Asgard to kill Thor. Thor died, but so did Gunnar Magnusson and Zhang Guolao, while Leif was terribly burned and Atticus became a target of Norse vengeance. The damage surrounding the escape also helped Loki break free. To protect Granuaile and Oberon, Atticus used the Morrigan's help to make the world believe he was dead and abandoned his life in Tempe. While hiding after a dangerous bargain with Coyote, he continued Granuaile's long training. By the close of that crisis she was still an apprentice, the false death offered only temporary protection, and both the debt for Thor and the threat from Loki remained active.

Years have passed while Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon remain concealed from the supernatural powers that believe Atticus dead. Granuaile has used that time to complete almost all of the intellectual and physical preparation required of a Druid. The remaining step is the magical binding that will connect her to the earth and give her the abilities Atticus already possesses. Their long isolation cannot continue indefinitely, however. The deception surrounding Atticus's death is losing its value, Fae travel is unreliable, and signs of renewed attention show that enemies created by the journey to Asgard have not forgotten him. Atticus therefore has to balance the binding ceremony's demands with the need to move before the small household is cornered.

Atticus and Granuaile begin the final work needed for her binding while Oberon accompanies them through territory where their usual escape routes cannot be trusted. The years of lessons have made Granuaile capable of evaluating danger and challenging Atticus's decisions, but until the ritual is complete she cannot draw on the earth as he does. Messages and encounters with divine powers confirm that their problems extend beyond a single pursuer. Atticus's role in Thor's death has damaged old relationships, Loki's freedom threatens a much broader conflict, and members of other pantheons now have grievances of their own. The Druids continue toward a place where Granuaile can finish the binding, knowing that delay makes discovery more likely.

Atticus and Granuaile continue the final work required for her binding while attacks and blocked routes make a safe completion increasingly difficult. The years of study have already made Granuaile capable of planning with Atticus and rejecting choices made on her behalf, but she cannot yet depend on the full connection to the earth that would follow the ritual. Their enemies use this vulnerable interval to close the distance. The Druids keep Oberon with them, protect the conditions needed for the binding, and avoid committing themselves to divine allies whose help would create another dangerous obligation.

Granuaile completes the binding to the earth and becomes a full Druid, ending years of apprenticeship under dangerous conditions. Her new connection gives her access to the healing, strength, and bindings she has studied, although experience must still catch up with knowledge. The attacks reveal powers with different motives: the Norse consequences of Thor's death and Loki's release remain in the background, while an Olympian grievance supplies the immediate pursuit. Atticus and Granuaile determine that Bacchus is central to the trap. His hostility reaches back to the Bacchants destroyed in Arizona, and he intends to make Atticus pay while preventing the Druids from escaping.

Atticus and Granuaile turn from evasion toward confronting the force directing the attacks. Allies can offer information or limited help, but none can cancel the accumulated divine claims against Atticus. The confrontation with Bacchus becomes unavoidable. Granuaile takes part as a full Druid, applying her training under conditions where a mistake would endanger both her and the earth connections on which the pair depend. Oberon remains with them as the conflict narrows toward Bacchus himself. At the same time, Loki's freedom ensures that even a victory over the Olympian god will not settle the larger instability Atticus helped create in Asgard.

Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon survive the final confrontation, and Atticus kills Bacchus, ending the wine god's attempt to trap and destroy them. Granuaile finishes the crisis as a fully bound Druid who has fought beside her former teacher, not as an apprentice waiting for protection. The outcome nevertheless replaces one threat with another. Artemis and Diana regard Bacchus's death as a wrong requiring vengeance and prepare to pursue both Druids. The old Norse consequences also remain: Thor is dead, Loki is free, and Atticus still lacks a secure peace with the powers affected by the Asgard expedition. With the Olympian hunt beginning and safe supernatural routes uncertain, Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon must keep moving.

Granuaile completes the binding that makes her a full Druid, giving her direct access to the earth's power and ending the apprenticeship that began in Tempe. She, Atticus, and Oberon survive the converging attacks that followed their emergence from hiding. Atticus confronts Bacchus and kills him, ending the wine god's immediate campaign but creating a new Olympian grievance. Artemis and Diana take up the matter as a personal offense and prepare to hunt both Druids. The Norse crisis is also unresolved: killing Thor did not erase Atticus's debt, and Loki remains free to exploit divisions among pantheons. Atticus and Granuaile leave the conflict as partners with comparable Druidic abilities, but they have no secure refuge and must face the hunt already forming around them.
