Laura's husband escapes and returns to Malta, ending the immediate leverage against her but creating painful misunderstandings about her friendship with Stephen. Stephen concludes that a highly placed British source is betraying operations, yet he does not discover that Andrew Wray, working with Ledward and Lesueur, is central to the leak. Jack is ordered to pursue USS Norfolk into the Pacific, setting Surprise on another long voyage while the traitors retain access and Stephen's marriage to Diana remains unresolved.

Previously: Jack Aubrey served in the old Worcester on the Toulon blockade before transferring with many of his people to Surprise. In the Ionian theatre, Jack's naval operations supported Stephen Maturin and Professor Graham as they dealt with the rival claims of Ali Pasha and Mustapha Pasha and resisted French influence. The mission gained Britain a limited advantage without settling the local feud. Stephen continues intelligence work even though French officials exposed his identity during his earlier captivity. His marriage to Diana is strained, and their separation remains unresolved as Surprise returns to Malta.

Surprise is at Malta after the Ionian mission, with Jack seeking useful employment and Stephen watching a port crowded with naval, diplomatic, and commercial interests. Stephen meets Laura Fielding, an Englishwoman whose husband Charles is held by the French. Her beauty attracts attention, but her real danger comes from dependence on reports and promises about her husband's treatment.
