Turn Coat characters

By Jim Butcher

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Harry Dresden (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Chicago's only professional wizard, a Warden of the White Council and a consultant to the police on cases that defy explanation. Tall, wisecracking, and chronically broke, Harry has spent years making powerful enemies and a smaller circle of fierce friends. The Council's long war with the vampire Red Court still grinds on, and Harry is watched with suspicion by those who remember he was once tried for using forbidden magic. When the Warden who has hounded him for years turns up wounded at his door begging for help, Harry is forced to choose between an old grudge and his conscience.

Donald Morgan (Supporting)

Also known as Warden Morgan

Appears from the start

Donald Morgan, a senior Warden of the White Council and, for most of Harry's adult life, his implacable watchdog, certain Harry would one day fall to black magic. Now the tables have turned: Morgan stands accused of murdering a member of the Senior Council and has fled with a death sentence on his head. Gravely wounded and out of options, he comes to the one person the Council would never expect to shelter him, and asks Harry to prove him innocent.

Mouse (Minor)

Appears from the start

Harry's dog, an enormous grey Tibetan Temple Dog who is far more than he appears. Intelligent, gentle with those he guards, and formidable against the supernatural, Mouse is a steadfast protector whose presence has saved lives more than once.

Karrin Murphy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A Chicago police officer who for years ran the department's Special Investigations unit, handling the cases no one else would touch. Small, blond, and relentless, Murphy is one of Harry's oldest and most trusted allies, a mortal who fights monsters with courage and a good aim rather than magic. Her standing on the force has suffered for her association with Harry, but her loyalty has not.

Anastasia Luccio (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

Captain of the Wardens and Harry's superior, a centuries-old wizard whose consciousness was long ago transferred into a younger body. Anastasia Luccio trains the Council's new Wardens and has grown romantically close to Harry. She once served alongside Morgan and knows him well, which makes his alleged crime all the harder for her to accept. As the investigation unfolds, troubling questions gather around her own recent conduct.

Molly Carpenter (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

Harry's young apprentice, daughter of the retired Knight of the Cross Michael Carpenter. A gifted sensitive whose talents run to the mind and to veils and illusions, Molly is still learning the discipline the Council demands, having herself once skirted its Laws. Loyal and brave, she throws herself into helping Harry shelter Morgan, but her empathic gift leaves her dangerously exposed when violence and death come close.

Peabody (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

The White Council's chief administrator, a mild, fussy functionary who handles the endless paperwork, correspondence, and records that keep the Council running. Easy to overlook and always somewhere at the edge of official business, he seems the least remarkable man in any room full of wizards.

Thomas Raith (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

Harry's half-brother, a member of the White Court of vampires who feeds on the life energy of lovers. Handsome and outwardly frivolous, Thomas keeps his kinship with Harry a closely guarded secret and lives a carefully mundane life. When Harry needs somewhere truly safe to hide a fugitive, Thomas is one of the few he can trust, and helping his brother draws him into the reach of something far more dangerous than the Council.

The Skinwalker (Antagonist)

Also known as naagloshii

First appears in chapter 18

An ancient and monstrous being out of Native American nightmare, a naagloshii or skinwalker of terrible power that has taken service as a hunter and killer. It can wear other shapes, shrug off wounds that would end almost anything, and radiates a corrupting dread that sickens those near it. Hired to run down a target, it is patient, cruel, and very nearly unstoppable, and it takes a personal interest in making Harry suffer.

Listens-to-Wind (Supporting)

Also known as Injun Joe

First appears in chapter 30

A member of the White Council's ruling Senior Council, an ancient Native American wizard and one of the world's great healers. Quiet and unassuming, Listens-to-Wind carries centuries of knowledge and a deep, weathered strength. He recognizes the nature of the creature stalking Harry's investigation and stands among the few beings capable of facing it.
