Twelfth Night recap

After a shipwreck separates Viola from her twin Sebastian, she disguises herself as a young man, Cesario, and serves Duke Orsino. Orsino sends her to woo the mourning Olivia, but Viola loves Orsino while Olivia falls for Cesario. Meanwhile, Olivia's uncle Sir Toby and his companions punish the proud steward Malvolio with a forged letter that convinces him Olivia loves him; his bizarre behavior leads to his confinement as a supposed madman. Sebastian, also alive, enters Illyria with the devoted Antonio. Because he looks exactly like Cesario, strangers challenge, embrace, or marry him under a mistaken identity, and he accepts Olivia's sudden love. When the twins finally appear together, the confusion ends. Olivia remains married to Sebastian, Orsino asks Viola to marry him, and Sir Toby marries Maria. Malvolio learns that he was deceived and departs vowing revenge, leaving the comic reconciliation deliberately incomplete.

Duke Orsino of Illyria continues to pursue Countess Olivia, who says she will avoid men while mourning her brother. A shipwreck brings Viola to the coast. Believing her twin brother Sebastian has died, she disguises herself as a young man called Cesario and enters Orsino's service. Orsino quickly favors his new page and sends Cesario to present his case to Olivia. In Olivia's household, her drunken uncle Sir Toby entertains the wealthy but foolish Sir Andrew, who imagines himself a possible husband for Olivia. Maria, Olivia's attendant, warns the men about their behavior but shares their delight in wit and mischief.

Viola, disguised as Cesario, gains an interview with Olivia. Her spirited delivery does not make Olivia love Orsino, but it does make Olivia fall for the messenger. Olivia sends Malvolio after Cesario with a ring as a pretext for another meeting. Viola realizes that her disguise has created a triangle: she loves Orsino, Orsino loves Olivia, and Olivia loves the identity Viola has assumed. Elsewhere, Sebastian is revealed to have survived the wreck. His rescuer Antonio follows him toward Illyria despite the personal danger of returning there. In Olivia's house, Feste resumes his place as fool, while Malvolio's disapproval of Sir Toby's late-night revels deepens the household quarrel.

Orsino speaks intimately with Cesario about love, unaware that his page is Viola and loves him. Viola offers a disguised account of a woman whose hidden devotion resembles her own, but Orsino again sends her to Olivia. Sir Toby, Maria, Sir Andrew, Feste, and Fabian turn their anger at Malvolio into a scheme. Maria writes a letter imitating Olivia's hand and leaves it where Malvolio will find it. The message hints that Olivia loves him and instructs him to smile constantly, wear yellow stockings with crossed garters, and behave with authority toward her relatives. Malvolio accepts the fantasy because it matches his ambition and sets out to obey. Sir Andrew, jealous of Olivia's interest in Cesario, is persuaded to write a challenge.

Olivia openly declares her love to Cesario, leaving Viola unable to return it or reveal why. Malvolio appears before Olivia smiling and dressed according to the forged letter. Since the costume and conduct contradict everything she expects of him, Olivia concludes that he is unwell and leaves Sir Toby to care for him. The conspirators instead confine Malvolio as a madman, and Feste torments him while pretending to be a learned examiner. Sir Toby arranges a duel between the frightened Sir Andrew and the equally unwilling Cesario. Antonio intervenes, believing Cesario to be Sebastian, and is arrested by Orsino's officers. When Cesario denies knowing him and cannot return a purse Antonio entrusted to Sebastian, Antonio feels betrayed; Viola, hearing him call her Sebastian, begins to hope her brother is alive.

Sebastian enters the confusion and is repeatedly mistaken for Cesario. He defeats Sir Toby and Sir Andrew when they attack him, then accepts Olivia's astonishing affection and agrees to marry her. When Orsino visits Olivia, she treats Cesario as the husband she has just married, while Antonio insists that the same young man is Sebastian. The simultaneous arrival of Sebastian and Viola makes the truth visible. The twins recognize one another, and Viola explains her disguise. Olivia accepts Sebastian as her husband, and Orsino turns from Olivia to Viola and proposes marriage. Fabian reveals the trick played on Malvolio; Sir Toby has married Maria, but Malvolio rejects the offered explanation and leaves promising revenge. The reunited households prepare to celebrate, with the damage done to Malvolio left only partly repaired.

The arrival of both twins finally resolves the mistaken identities. Viola and Sebastian recognize each other, and Viola confirms that she can prove her true identity once the captain holding her clothes is found. Orsino accepts that Olivia has married Sebastian rather than Cesario and turns his affection toward Viola, asking her to become his wife. Olivia welcomes Viola as a sister. Sir Toby has married Maria in reward for her part in the trick on Malvolio, while Sir Andrew has been beaten and humiliated. Fabian explains how the forged letter led Malvolio to behave strangely and how the household confined and mocked him. Olivia orders that amends be made, but Malvolio leaves promising revenge on everyone involved. Antonio is no longer treated as a madman once Sebastian confirms their history. The play closes with two intended or completed marriages, but Feste's final song and Malvolio's anger leave a sober edge beneath the festivities.
