A woman calling herself Carmen Manoso confronts Stephanie and claims to be Ranger's wife. Soon afterward Carmen is murdered, Ranger's daughter Julie is abducted, and evidence makes Ranger appear connected to both crimes. Ranger goes outside official channels to find Julie while Morelli works the police investigation and Stephanie becomes the link both men use. The search reveals an impersonator who has studied Ranger and built a false identity around him. Edward Scrog killed Carmen and kidnapped Julie as part of a fantasy in which he could take Ranger's place and assemble Ranger's family and relationships for himself. Scrog captures Stephanie as well, but she keeps Julie alive and helps delay him until Ranger and Morelli close in. Scrog is killed, Julie is rescued and reunited with her mother Rachel, and Ranger is cleared. Stephanie learns more about Ranger's hidden family life, but neither that intimacy nor Morelli's support resolves the triangle between them.

Previously: Stephanie Plum tried to leave fugitive apprehension for safer employment, but a campaign of threats and attacks followed her through a succession of ordinary jobs. Joe Morelli disappeared while the danger was being investigated, and Stephanie worked with Ranger to trace and recover him alive. The crisis ended her attempt to separate her working life from the people and risks attached to the bail-bond office. She begins this book still relying on Lula as a field partner, Morelli as both a police ally and romantic partner, and Ranger as the private-security expert whose protection and secrecy keep him equally close to her. Her personal choice between Morelli and Ranger remains unresolved.

Stephanie and Lula begin with the ordinary problem of recovering Melvin Pickle, a fugitive associated with grave robbery. The bond work is interrupted when Carmen Manoso arrives at Vinnie's office, announces that she is Ranger's wife, and warns Stephanie away from him. Ranger's guarded history makes the claim difficult for Stephanie to test, even though Carmen's behavior does not fit what little Stephanie knows of his private life. Morelli is skeptical and protective, while Ranger supplies only limited answers. Sally Sweet's plans for a band give Lula and Grandma Mazur a separate focus, but Carmen's appearance establishes the more serious question: someone has entered Stephanie's familiar circle by using Ranger's name and has chosen Stephanie as a point of contact.

The apparent domestic dispute becomes a criminal investigation. Carmen is found murdered, and the identity she claimed directs suspicion toward Ranger. At the same time, Ranger's young daughter Julie is abducted from the life she shares with her mother, Rachel. Stephanie had not known that Ranger had a daughter, and the revelation explains why he will not wait for the police process to clear him before acting. Morelli must treat the evidence seriously while also recognizing that someone may be constructing a case around Ranger. Ranger avoids the ordinary channels that could confine him and uses Rangeman resources to search for Julie. Stephanie stands between the official investigation and Ranger's private one, trusted by both men and exposed to whoever is exploiting that connection.

Evidence increasingly separates the real Ranger from the person using his identity. The kidnapper has learned enough about Ranger's history, work, and relationships to imitate him and to make police evidence point in the wrong direction. Carmen's claim of marriage was part of that false life rather than proof that Ranger had concealed a current wife from Stephanie. Ranger shares more of his family history because finding Julie now requires it, while Rachel and Morelli contribute information available through official contacts. Stephanie continues her normal bond-office work only at the margins. The central task is to identify an impersonator who does not merely want money or escape, but is trying to occupy Ranger's place and control the people he considers part of that identity.

The impersonator is identified as Edward Scrog, whose obsession with Ranger has developed into an effort to reproduce Ranger's life. Scrog is responsible for Carmen's death and for taking Julie. The kidnapping is not a straightforward ransom demand: Julie is part of a substitute family Scrog believes he can assemble by assuming Ranger's identity. Stephanie's personal connection to Ranger makes her another intended part of that plan. Ranger and Morelli close in from different directions, but Scrog's preparation and willingness to kill keep Julie in immediate danger. Stephanie becomes a target as well, and the case shifts from discovering why Ranger was framed to reaching both captives before Scrog completes the violent fantasy he has constructed.

Scrog abducts Stephanie and holds her with Julie, expecting Stephanie to accept the role he has created for her in his imitation of Ranger's life. Stephanie works to keep Julie calm and alive while resisting Scrog and delaying his plan. Ranger and Morelli use their separate resources to find the hiding place, and the pursuit ends in a violent confrontation in which Scrog is killed. Stephanie and Julie survive, and Julie is reunited with her mother Rachel. The evidence clears Ranger of the murder and kidnapping suspicions produced by Scrog's impersonation. Ranger's willingness to expose part of his hidden family history deepens Stephanie's understanding of him but does not make him a conventional partner. Morelli remains close to Stephanie and Ranger remains in her life, leaving the romantic triangle intact after the rescue.

Edward Scrog's imitation of Ranger is exposed as the structure behind the case. He killed Carmen, abducted Julie, and used Ranger's identity to build a fantasy in which he could replace Ranger and claim the people associated with him. Scrog also takes Stephanie, intending to force her into the role he has assigned her. Stephanie protects Julie and resists him long enough for the search to reach their hiding place. Scrog is killed in the final confrontation, and Stephanie and Julie are recovered alive. Julie returns to Rachel, Ranger is cleared of the murder and kidnapping suspicions created by the impersonation, and the immediate threat to his family ends. The crisis gives Stephanie a clearer view of Ranger's history and loyalties without making him less private or turning their connection into a conventional relationship. Morelli remains Stephanie's partner and police ally, Ranger remains personally and professionally close to her, and the competition between the two men is unresolved as the book closes.
