Uncle Vanya recap

Retired Professor Serebryakov returns to the rural estate that has long financed him, accompanied by his young wife, Yelena. Their presence unsettles the household: Vanya, who has managed the property for years, bitterly concludes that he sacrificed his life to an ordinary man and declares his love for Yelena; Sonya, the professor's daughter, longs for the visiting doctor Astrov; and Yelena is drawn to Astrov in return. When the professor proposes selling the estate, Vanya sees the plan as the final theft of his and Sonya's labor. He fires at Serebryakov twice and misses. The visitors decide to leave, Vanya returns stolen morphine to Astrov, and everyone resumes the old financial arrangement. Astrov departs without answering Sonya's love, while Vanya and Sonya go back to the estate accounts. Sonya comforts her despairing uncle with the hope that patient work and suffering will lead to peace after death.

Professor Serebryakov and his young second wife, Yelena, are staying on the country estate that belongs to his daughter Sonya. Their irregular hours and complaints have disrupted a household normally sustained by Sonya and her uncle Vanya. Dr. Astrov, exhausted by years of medical work, visits and speaks of the forests he is trying to preserve. Vanya, once an admirer of the professor, now regards him as a fraud whose career consumed the labor of others. He also admits his growing love for Yelena. Sonya quietly confides that she has loved Astrov for years, though his manner toward her gives little cause for hope. Around them, Marina and Telegin continue the domestic routine while resentments that were previously contained begin to surface.

A sleepless night exposes the household's emotional strain. Serebryakov complains of age and illness, demanding Yelena's care while rejecting sympathy. Once he retires, Vanya presses Yelena to acknowledge the emptiness of her marriage and his devotion to her, but she refuses him. Astrov arrives after drinking and speaks with Sonya about his fatigue and inability to love. Later, Sonya and Yelena overcome some of the reserve between them. Sonya confesses that she loves Astrov and asks Yelena to discover whether he might return her feelings. Yelena agrees to question him, though the prospect also forces her to consider her own restlessness and interest in the doctor.

When Yelena questions Astrov on Sonya's behalf, he says he does not love Sonya and assumes Yelena is arranging a private meeting for herself. He embraces Yelena just as Vanya enters carrying flowers. Shaken by the encounter and its discovery, Yelena decides that she and Serebryakov must leave. The professor then summons the household and proposes selling the estate, investing the proceeds, and buying a more convenient home abroad. Vanya reacts with outrage: the property came from Sonya's mother, and he and Sonya have spent years working to support the professor while settling its debts. Serebryakov has not considered where they would live. The quarrel becomes chaotic. Vanya obtains a pistol and fires twice at the professor, missing both times. His attempted violence leaves the household horrified and forces the long-standing conflict into the open.

Serebryakov and Yelena prepare to leave the estate. Vanya, humiliated by the failed shooting and overwhelmed by despair, has taken morphine from Astrov's case, but Sonya persuades him to return it. Astrov makes clear that he cannot offer Sonya the love she hopes for. He and Yelena exchange a final private farewell, acknowledging their attraction without beginning an affair, and Astrov leaves. Vanya and Serebryakov reconcile formally: Vanya promises to resume managing the estate and sending its revenues, while the professor agrees to let the old arrangement stand. After the visitors depart, Vanya and Sonya sit down at once to restore the accounts. Vanya weeps at the thought of his remaining years. Sonya tells him that they must continue to work, endure their unhappiness, and trust that peace will come after death. Telegin plays softly as their former routine closes around them.

After Serebryakov announces that he and Yelena will leave, the household restores the outward arrangements that existed before their visit. Vanya and the professor formally reconcile, and Vanya promises that the estate will continue sending money as before. Astrov retrieves the morphine Vanya took from his medical case, rejects Sonya's unspoken hope of a future with him, and departs after a restrained farewell to Yelena. The professor and Yelena leave the estate, taking with them the passions their stay awakened but resolving none of them. Vanya and Sonya return immediately to the account books. When Vanya breaks down over the prospect of enduring the rest of his life, Sonya consoles him with faith that their work and suffering will eventually be followed by rest beyond this life. The play closes with the two of them working as the familiar household sounds resume around them.
