Previously: Honor Harrington commands the Grand Alliance formed by Manticore, Haven, and Grayson. Their former conflicts have yielded to cooperation against the Solarian League and the concealed Mesan Alignment. The Alignment has manipulated governments, intelligence services, and wars while using lethal control technology to silence compromised agents. Its Yawata Strike devastated Manticore's orbital industry and inflicted heavy civilian losses. Manticore has also defeated major Solarian forces, but the League's leadership remains committed to coercion rather than accommodation. Anton Zilwicki and Victor Cachat have helped expose the Alignment, prompting its leaders to accelerate a planned evacuation from Mesa. Beowulf is moving toward secession from the League and already supports the Alliance in practice. Honor shares her family life with Hamish Alexander-Harrington, Emily Alexander Harrington, their children, and her bonded tree cat Nimitz while carrying the strategic burden of the continuing war.

Manticore is salvaging captured Solarian warships while rebuilding the orbital industry destroyed by the Yawata Strike. Honor considers using recovered weapons in remote defenses, and Sonja Hemphill has moved research personnel to the expanding Bolthole base. The Solarian Navy launches Operation Buccaneer, a campaign meant to frighten systems away from trade or political association with Manticore. Meanwhile, Daud ibn Mamoun Al-Fanudahi and other Solarian investigators quietly map a suspected hostile network inside League institutions. Forensic work on captured Eleventh Fleet records produces a major discovery: Massimo Filaretta had apparently decided to surrender before hostile control intervened and his fleet launched. Honor concludes that killer nanotechnology forced the attack that led to the deaths of a quarter-million Solarian spacers.

Operation Buccaneer strikes neutral Cashelot and destroys much of its orbital industry despite the commander's efforts to limit casualties. The Ghost Hunters identify more suspicious links inside the Solarian government but still lack evidence that can survive legal scrutiny. At Hypatia, a leaked discussion of coercion strengthens support for secession. The League also attacks Manticore's position at the Prime-Ajay hyper-bridge with improved missiles and large pod formations. The hidden Manticoran commander resolves to act despite overwhelming odds. As the Solarian force deploys its missile supply, two unwedged missile colliers abruptly disappear. The cause is not yet clear to the attackers, but their bombardment is about to face organized resistance.

Rear Admiral Katoch's concealed force uses stealthy impeller drones to destroy the Solarian missile freighters, then attacks through remote platforms. Task Force 1030 answers with roughly 120,000 missiles. Firebrand is now safely identified as Damian Harahap, his tree cat as Firewatch, and Honor proposes sending them with Anton Zilwicki to Mesa to hunt the vanished organization.

Solarian investigators increasingly doubt that Manticore caused the protectorate unrest or Mesa's destruction. Their surveillance identifies likely covert message passing through a financial adviser. When they secretly detain an intelligence colonel tied to her, he admits corrupt work for commercial interests but dies as soon as the adviser is named. Forensics reveal self-replicating nanotechnology keyed to his body, confirming a sophisticated kill mechanism while leaving its origin uncertain. Meanwhile, Solarian leaders activate preparations for Operation Fabius, an attack on Beowulf's missile industry using untested Asta weapons before Mycroft is fully secure. The Alignment covertly disperses autonomous platforms and sensor drones inside Beowulf. At Mesa, Gold Peak accepts Harahap and Firewatch into Zilwicki's investigation after the tree cats attest to Harahap's loyalty. The Alliance still cannot publicly disprove responsibility for the Mesa atrocity. McAvoy begins rebuilding a direct Apollo targeting solution, but the delay and loss of precision give the Solarian force an opportunity. Beowulf's block ships form layered impeller-wedge shields around its industry and habitats. Most of the Asta strike is stopped or diverted from civilian targets. One attack destroys an Ivaldi nanofarm and kills five thousand workers, but the missile-production lines survive. Apollo is even more decisive against Task Force 790: only thirty-seven of more than four hundred battlecruisers cross the hyper limit, and few damaged stragglers are expected to escape. The military raid has failed, though its precise target intelligence indicates an internal security breach. Victory is immediately overtaken by a separate attack. A nuclear weapon hidden decades earlier in a cargo container inside Beowulf Gamma receives its activation code. The bomb destroys the entire habitat and kills 9.5 million people, including the planted agent who triggered it. No incoming missiles remain to explain the loss, proving that the system still contains a concealed threat after the Solarian fleet's defeat.

Beowulf's leaders determine that Gamma was destroyed from within and suspect the Alignment. Five minutes later, a second hidden bomb destroys Beta and kills another 11.25 million people. The spacing is a deliberate signal, and evacuation of the remaining habitats is impossible. A third explosion destroys Alpha. The final confirmed toll from the Beowulf Strike exceeds 43 million, including many senior allied officials. Before the full public announcement, Honor returns home to tell Emily what has happened. The Gendarmerie brings Kingsford evidence that an outside conspiracy knew Fabius in advance. A suspected infiltrator dies when arrested, confirming the lethal-control pattern, and Kingsford agrees to form a trusted counter-network. Grand Fleet then appears in the Sol System beside a training squadron. Honor launches before accepting communication and nearly destroys the ships after they strike their wedges. Mercedes Brigham breaks through her rage, allowing Honor to abort the salvo and accept their surrender.

Grand Fleet advances on Naval Station Ganymede with roughly six hundred ships. Honor withholds communication until she can stage a demonstration, then launches more than two thousand missiles. Ganymede answers with an enormous Cataphract salvo, but its defenses cannot stop the Alliance attack. Honor deliberately destroys most of the station's reserve superdreadnoughts while sparing its active ships and principal platforms, proving she could have annihilated them at will. Grand Fleet translates away before the return salvo can engage, leaving Ganymede unable to force a battle. At the same time, Kingsford and the Gendarmerie conduct staged arrests among senior officers.
