Fleeing demonic cultivators, Sen survives a qi-shaped storm, undergoes the five-fold body transformation, and is forced into core formation with a strange heavenly-shadow core. His party is captured at the Temple of Eternity's Edge, where he devises a new cultivation method and escapes with Feng's watcher, while his younger companion remains behind. At Inferno's Vale, Sen ends a sect war through heavenly oaths and treats wounded cultivators from both sides, but learns that his watcher manipulated him into the conflict to reach her brother. Previously: Sen became the independent disciple of Feng Ming and also trained under Kho Jaw-Long and Caihong. These three nascent-soul cultivators form a powerful mountain family around him, teaching him cultivation, spear combat, and alchemy. Falling Leaf, a Ghost Panther, became one of his closest companions. Sen's actions also brought him into conflict with demonic cultivators, leaving him and his companions under continuing threat as this volume begins.

So far this book: While fleeing by ship, Sen detects foreign qi driving a destructive storm toward the vessel. He protects the entire ship inside a hardened shell of water, but the effort severely injures him. During his recovery, he discovers an unexplained ribbon of qi circling his dantian. On a nearby beach, an ancient divine turtle adds rare ingredients to Sen's healing elixir. The resulting transformation rebuilds his body and completes a five-fold body transformation. The advancement immediately draws heavenly lightning. Sen survives his first tribulation by combining earth defenses, his spear, and liquid qi, though he is left burned and exhausted. So far this book: Feng's watcher survives the city ambush, kills the cultivators pursuing her, and tracks Sen's route while eliminating additional searchers. She rejoins Sen and his younger companion outside Heaven's Virtue, and the three agree to share information relevant to their safety. A pull on Sen's soul leads them west, even as the strange ribbon in his dantian makes him postpone core formation. Their concealed camp is then attacked by demonic cultivators sent specifically for Sen. Formations and killing intent let Sen turn the ambush, and the watcher invokes his ties to Feng Ming, Kho Jaw-Long, and Caihong. When Sen releases Heaven's Rebuke, the anomalous qi alters the technique, destroys the enemy leader's core, and kills him. Sen realizes that such a power would make him a target for core cultivators everywhere, so both companions swear binding heavenly oaths to keep it secret.

So far this book: Elsewhere, Falling Leaf learns to live in a human body so she can seek Sen, while Feng Ming and Kho Jaw-Long attack demonic cultivators connected to Sen's intelligence. Sen's group abandons the road for the wilds after deciding that repeated ambushes are the greater danger. Sen has enough liquid qi to attempt core formation but wants to delay it until the party can prepare. A massive influx of heavenly qi makes that impossible. He shares a safe portion with his companions and tries to contain the rest, but the energy forces his breakthrough. Heavenly qi and shadow qi merge into a liquid gray substance that hardens his new core. Sen names this energy heavenly shadow. He emerges as a core-formation cultivator, but his dantian is nearly empty and his former cultivation method can no longer replenish it effectively.

So far this book: Sen wakes after several days of core formation to find his companions trapped in a battle involving spirit beasts and demonic cultivators. With help from protective spirit oxen, the party defeats the immediate enemies and withdraws. Sen begins testing new cultivation manuals because his old method no longer suits his core. Continued travel brings attacks, infection, and the attention of a nascent soul-level dragon, though Sen suspects an unseen influence may also be discouraging some spirit beasts. A persistent inner pull leads the group to a buried road and southward into the deep wilds. When they finally decide the destination is too dangerous and try to turn back, an elderly cultivator appears. He overwhelms all three travelers and forces them to the Temple of Eternity's Edge, warning that nearly everyone who enters remains there.

So far this book: The leader of the Temple of Eternity's Edge defeats Sen's resistance, confiscates the party's belongings, and imprisons each traveler separately. Sen refuses recruitment and uses his long isolation to experiment with multiple parallel qi flows. In a deep inner trance, he develops a four-path system that can sustain his core and produce core-level qi without overwhelming his mind. After waking, Sen invokes Feng Ming, Kho Jaw-Long, and Caihong, and heavenly thunder helps force the return of his possessions. He secures the release of Feng's watcher, but their younger companion has adopted temple robes and refuses to leave. Sen believes the leader's gray energy has influenced her, although her fear and resentment are real. So far this book: Sen and Feng's watcher evade pursuit while she recovers from drugged temple food and sustained recruitment pressure. They agree to return against the temple leader once they are strong enough. The watcher chooses to remain with Sen even when he offers to request a replacement, and the pair enter Lin Wen's Redoubt to report their survival through Feng Ming's network. Their local contact betrays their arrival to a merchant and is killed. The merchant then traps them with crossbowmen inside a flawed qi-suppression formation, intending to sell Sen to a merchant prince from the capital. Sen collapses the formation, and the pair defeat the ambush. They spare the merchant after concluding that an unknown party sabotaged her plan in hopes of killing everyone involved. Sen and the watcher continue toward Inferno's Vale, now treating it as a place to train rather than merely hide.

So far this book: At Inferno's Vale, Sen and his watcher find fire and water cultivators fighting a major battle. She reveals that her estranged brother is among the fire cultivators, and Sen agrees to help locate him. After intervening for a trapped fire patrol, Sen regrets choosing a side without understanding the feud, but continues toward the fire compound. A water-side swordswoman challenges him to a formal duel. Sen defeats her and treats her wounds, then publicly accepts the identity Judgment's Gale. He raises a storm of fire, shadow, and lightning and threatens to end the battle himself. Both commanders surrender their weapons. Sen orders the armies to collect their wounded and withdraw, then compels the commanders to swear heavenly oaths preventing renewed attacks between their sects. The organized conflict ends under his temporary authority.

So far this book: Sen remains neutral while supervising the battlefield cleanup with the water-side swordswoman. He produces healing elixirs for both forces and spends days treating their most severe casualties. His success makes his alchemical skill widely known, and healers begin competing to study under him. After the water cultivators recover enough to leave, their swordswoman invites him to visit and they acknowledge mutual interest without making a commitment. Sen then confronts Feng's watcher. She admits that she concealed her brother's presence and deliberately relied on Sen's character and abilities to draw him into the battle. She believes the outcome justified the choice for everyone except Sen. He accepts responsibility for choosing to fight but tells her that the manipulation destroyed his trust. Their working arrangement continues, while their friendship remains broken.

So far this book: The Order of the Celestial Flame's matriarch summons Sen after seeing him teach young sword students. She explains that an outsider could end the generational feud without causing the internal fracture that direct intervention might have produced. Although the commanders' oaths do not formally bind the sect leaders, renewed war is now unlikely. In exchange for Sen's help, the matriarch identifies possible holders of the five-fold body-transformation manual and promises him a weapon. Her white-haired daughter seeks alchemy instruction, but Sen refuses because he judges her unwilling to learn. Kho Jaw-Long then arrives, followed by Feng Ming, Caihong, and a young woman who embraces Sen and identifies herself as Falling Leaf.
