In short (whole book)

Sen survives an unprecedented sixth body transformation and turns his growing academy and town toward quiet preparation for a continent-wide spirit-beast war. He explores a tense intelligence arrangement with enemies of the Beast King, resolves challenges from established sects, and delegates more of his expanding responsibilities. When Twisted Blade cultivators raid his town and abduct a child, Sen decides that deterrence requires destroying their sect. With Kho, Falling Leaf, and Glimmer of Night supporting him, he infiltrates the compound, builds a poison formation, and breaks its defenders. Kho kills the patriarch, the elders die, and Sen erases the site, while a heavenly sign leads him to spare two oath-bound Core Formation members. The massacre leaves him burdened by guilt, but its reputation shields his territory. He returns home, offers refuge to a vulnerable village, and continues preparing his household, academy, and growing community for the Beast King's approaching war.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Sen built an academy and protected community while gathering an unusual household of powerful cultivators and spirit beasts. Liu Ai became his adopted daughter and the center of the family he is determined to defend. Feng, Kho, Caihong, Fu Ru Lan, Falling Leaf, Glimmer of Night, and Long Jia Wei support him in different roles, though Sen's history with traditional sects has left him wary of their authority and motives. His cultivation has advanced through exceptional training, dangerous trials, rare resources, and repeated encounters with divine qi. Beyond his territory, the Beast King has been consolidating power among spirit beasts, raising the prospect of a war against humanity. Sen begins this volume with an academy to lead, a vulnerable town growing beside it, and a final body-transformation pill whose result cannot be predicted.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Sen completes a sixth body transformation after divine qi alters what should have been a five-stage process. The transformation reshapes the forest, and the following tribulation leaves him alive but so physically powerful that ordinary movement can shatter stone. A visible lattice of divine qi lies beneath his changed skin, while the full meaning of the alteration remains unknown. Back at the academy, Liu Ai accepts his new appearance without fear. Falling Leaf is less concerned with how he looks than with the pace at which he risks his life and approaches ascension. She fears being left behind, and Sen promises to seek a way to accelerate her advancement. The academy itself is strained by instructor rivalries and competing ideas about cultivation, forcing Sen to discipline students and demand a broader education. Feng then confirms that the expected spirit-beast war will threaten the entire continent. Jiang is among the few leaders preparing, and Sen must begin weighing protection of his household and territory against the survival of humanity as a whole.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Sen quietly changes academy training to emphasize group combat and strengthens the town's defenses without announcing the coming war. Lai Dongmei warns that premature disclosure would create panic, while Kho helps with defensive formations. Long Jia Wei uncovers a spy at the academy and secretly kills him after carrying out Sen's public order of expulsion. Sen also ends prospective cooperation with Wu Meng Yao's sect when its suspicion makes trust impossible. Falling Leaf introduces an ice-wolf envoy from spirit-beast groups nearly eradicated for resisting the Beast King. These survivors offer intelligence, but initially intend to let humans bear the war and then destroy whoever remains. Sen rejects that plan and gives them a choice between a constrained alliance, neutrality without postwar claims, or facing the Beast King alone. He promises retaliation if they accept human cooperation and later betray it. Further reports reveal purges and divisions among the Beast King's followers, while Feng's earlier destruction of a large hostile force appears to have bought humanity a little time. No alliance is settled, and visitors from the Vermillion Blade Sect arrive at the academy.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Ban Hui Zhang arrives with his disciple Li Yi Nuo, who is angry because Sen mistakenly directed her away from Kho Jaw-Long. The elder is visiting on his own initiative rather than under sect orders, and his care for mortals distinguishes him from many sect leaders Sen has met. After a frank discussion of Sen's earlier clash with Vermillion Blade cultivators, the two establish an uneasy peace. Li Yi Nuo begins training with Kho, and Liu Ai's approval further lowers Sen's guard, though her unexplained ability to summon birds surprises the visitors. A Shattering Earth delegation then arrives to challenge Sen. He refuses a pointless duel, incapacitates a disrespectful cultivator through killing intent, and convinces the Nascent Soul elder that escalation would be disastrous. With Ban Hui Zhang mediating, the elder apologizes and makes a heaven-binding vow that his sect will not attack Sen or his sect. The immediate challenge ends without a battle, but the encounter confirms that the academy's growing status is drawing dangerous attention from established powers.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Sen shares the truth about the spirit-beast war with Ban Hui Zhang and an ambitious Core Formation member of his academy, expanding the confidential circle as preparations outgrow his ability to manage them alone. Feng presses him to delegate, and Sen gives the ambitious cultivator responsibility for town expansion. She treats the assignment as a chance to earn trust, and Sen's covert observation shows that she works hard, respects mortals, and stops abuse even when she believes no one important is watching. His judgment of her begins to soften. That progress is interrupted when sect cultivators raid the town, destroy a seamstress's shop, and abduct her child. Long Jia Wei rescues the girl and incapacitates her captor. Sen decides the attackers forfeited the protections of formal cultivator conflict by targeting mortals. He classifies them as bandits and begins lethal retaliation, while the assault establishes a direct threat to the town and everyone who has accepted his protection.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Sen destroys the captured raiders' cultivation and leaves them to the townspeople, who kill them. The seamstress and her child survive, but Sen concludes that Twisted Blade deliberately attacked mortals to force his hand and will bring a larger war unless he strikes first. Kho reveals that his hatred of abusive sects began with his sister's murder and offers to help destroy this one. Caihong supports taking him as backup, while Fu Ru Lan offers to solve the problem with overwhelming force. Sen refuses to transfer responsibility for his decision. He plans a covert campaign built on shadow travel, poison, and formation work. Before leaving, he deepens the academy's strategic capacity: Glimmer of Night helps create experimental paired communication cores, Ban Hui Zhang receives one, and Sen keeps their construction and remote-formation uses secret. Ban Hui Zhang and Li Yi Nuo depart after Sen invites the elder to consider joining his sect. The town begins developing more independent administration, while Sen prepares to test the strength gained from his transformation and assemble what the assault will require.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Hunting with Falling Leaf confirms that Sen's transformed body can overpower spirit beasts near the Nascent Soul threshold, heal quickly, and damage an ordinary sword. Falling Leaf secures a shadow-stag core that may help her advance but entrusts it to Sen until a safe method can be found. Glimmer of Night prepares dozens of unstable cores and chooses to accompany Sen, while warning that spider clusters will independently decide whether to support humans, spirit beasts, or neither in the coming war. Feng forges two heavier blue swords capable of carrying Sen's lightning qi. Sen also prepares an elixir for Shen Mingxia's attempt at Core Formation and delegates more civic work as the town continues growing. He then departs with Kho, Falling Leaf, and Glimmer of Night. Their offensive begins when Sen destroys a Twisted Blade expedition camp. A reluctant gatherer recognizes him as Judgment's Gale and, before her death, asks him to protect the impoverished village she had secretly supported. Sen promises that he will, adding a personal obligation to the campaign already underway.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

Sen studies the Twisted Blade compound and decides its leadership and higher-ranked members must be removed so the sect cannot rebuild, while weaker disciples may be allowed to flee. Falling Leaf and Glimmer of Night draw defenders away, allowing Sen to shadow-walk through the defenses and spend more than a week planting poison vials as parts of a larger formation. Two cultivators unexpectedly discover him, so he kills them and stages their deaths as a private quarrel to preserve his cover. The work becomes increasingly dangerous as exhaustion and stronger inner defenses take their toll. Near the patriarch's residence, Sen overhears contempt for outer disciples and discovers division among the elders, but a subtle compulsion nearly exposes him. He escapes and explains the threat to his companions. After resting, he returns with Falling Leaf and Glimmer of Night. Kho stays back, ready to intervene without taking the decision from his student. Sen accepts that protecting Liu Ai and his home is the central reason for the attack. At the forest edge, he remotely activates the formation and begins the destruction of the sect.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

The poison formation kills cultivators throughout the compound and drives survivors toward the gate, where Glimmer of Night detonates a web of cracked beast cores. Kho intercepts the returning patriarch, while Sen, Falling Leaf, and Glimmer of Night hunt the sect's remaining higher-ranked members. Sen spares fleeing qi-condensing disciples who do not attack and sends one survivor away to report that Judgment's Gale destroyed the sect. Falling Leaf is badly wounded by a Core Formation opponent but uses a concealed shadow-space technique to ambush and kill him. Sen briefly believes she may have died, and his rage hardens the assault, though he still restrains himself from killing every fleeing disciple. Glimmer of Night immobilizes and drains several elite cultivators as Sen burns through the central district. Sen offers three surviving Core Formation members a choice between death and surrendering their cultivation. Two resist and are killed. The last man pleads for an unconscious plant-tender who had wanted to leave the sect. A visible heavenly affirmation supports his oath, so Sen spares both and marks them for protection. At the numbered story's close, the sect is shattered, and the two protected cultivators remain alive inside the compound.

How does it end? (ending)

The Twisted Blade Sect is completely destroyed. Kho kills its patriarch, the remaining elders die, and Sen burns and levels the compound after recovering selected resources. The two Core Formation cultivators spared after a heavenly sign accept new identities and binding oaths against revenge, then leave as wandering cultivators. Sen allows the name Judgment's Gale to carry public credit for the destruction so that other sects will hesitate to threaten his people, though the killing leaves him grieving rather than triumphant. He returns north to Liu Ai and Caihong, fulfills his promise to protect the dead gatherer's village by offering its people land near his defended town, and continues preparations for the approaching spirit-beast war. Kho, Feng, Falling Leaf, Glimmer of Night, Long Jia Wei, and the academy remain part of that effort. The Beast King's campaign is still imminent, the rogue spirit-beast alliance is unsettled, Falling Leaf still lacks a safe advancement path, and Liu Ai's command of birds remains unexplained.
