An androgynous fox cultivator determined to stop Laughing River from obtaining the object he seeks. The infiltrator hides both body and surroundings beneath layered illusions, defeats Sen after he begins countering the deception, drugs him, and leaves to attack Laughing River.

Laughing River's descendant and the fox infiltrator who drugged Sen, wounded her grandfather, and abducted Li Yi Nuo. She opposes Laughing River's attempt to claim the ruins treasure, while her strong concealment and illusion craft make both pursuit and direct confrontation difficult.

An ancient monk who oversees the temple at the center of the city's mandala. He tells Sen that every traveller must finish an individual path before reuniting with the others, explains that the defenses test whether Laughing River is ready to ascend, and agrees to provide the spatial treasure.

The spider spirit beast Sen saved from a fire eagle, now identified on his separate mandala path. He regards Sen as a benefactor, follows the path set before him instead of taking tempting branches, and meets a distant transcendent ancestor who intends to choose boons for him.

A celestial-scale ancestor who receives Glimmer of Night at the end of his cosmic web-like mandala path. She treats him as one of her distant children and, after he declines to request any reward, decides that she will select suitable boons for him herself.

A spear-wielding devil directing the horde's pursuit as Sen's party leaves the ruins. It is physically stronger than Sen, intelligent enough to single him out, and violently hostile to living creatures and divine power. Its first spear strike leaves devilish qi in Sen's chest.

A child previously given a qi-marked necklace by Sen. Her extreme fear reaches him through that lingering connection after her village is burned. Sen follows the signal to a remote camp and finds her caged with other survivors, making their rescue his immediate priority.
