United as One characters

By Pittacus Lore

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

John Smith (Protagonist)

Also known as Number Four

Appears from the start

The fourth of the nine and the last narrator of the series. He is grieving Sarah, commanding an alliance he never asked to lead, and out of patience with anything that is not the end of the war. His Legacies are the broadest of any Garde and still growing. What he will not discuss is what he intends to spend to finish this, or that he has stopped assuming he will be alive when it is over.

Number Six (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The sixth of the nine, invisible when she chooses and able to call down weather, and the most capable soldier the Loric have. With human forces and newly powered human teenagers joining the war, she becomes one of the people responsible for turning them into something that can fight rather than simply die bravely.

Marina (Supporting)

Also known as Number Seven

Appears from the start

The seventh of the nine, healer and one of the group's deadliest fighters, carrying a Legacy of lethal cold that came out of grief. She has been hardened by every book since Spain, and the war's last phase asks her to keep people alive faster than the Mogadorians can kill them.

Number Nine (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The ninth of the nine, strong, fast, and able to move along any surface. He has spent the series wanting a straight fight against the Mogadorians and now has one, and he turns out to be better with the new human Garde than anyone expected him to be.

Ella (Supporting)

Also known as Number Ten

Appears from the start

The youngest Garde, whose Legacies work on minds and dreams. Setrakus Ra's claim on her as his granddaughter and heir has left a connection between them that she cannot simply refuse, and it makes her both the Garde's best source on him and their most dangerous vulnerability.

Adam (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The Mogadorian who broke with his own people, carrying the memories of Number One and an earth-shaking Legacy. He fights alongside the Garde against the species he was born into, and the intelligence he brings about Mogadorian command, ships, and doctrine is what makes an offensive possible at all.

Sam Goode (Supporting)

Appears from the start

John's human friend since Paradise, now with a Legacy of his own for reaching machines. He has been in this war longer than anyone except John and is no longer the person who has to be protected during it.

Malcolm Goode (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Sam's father, whose memories of the Loric arrival on Earth have shaped every advantage the Garde have found. He works the research and liaison side of an alliance that now includes human governments and militaries.

Number Five (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

The fifth of the nine, who killed Number Eight, fought for the Mogadorians, and is held responsible by John for Sarah Hart's death. He can fly and take on the properties of anything he touches, and he knows both sides of this war from the inside, which is the only reason anyone considers what he has to say.

Setrakus Ra (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The Mogadorian leader, who destroyed Lorien, hunted the nine across Earth, and now occupies its cities openly. He is not killable by any means the Garde have tried, and the claim he made on Ella has tied the two of them together in a way that makes striking at him dangerous to her.

Bernie Kosar (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The Chimaera who has guarded John since Lorien, taking whatever animal shape a fight requires. He has been with John longer than any other survivor of their world.
