Continuing the series, the captured warship Valkyrie proves it can strike the Maxolhx in a daring ambush, but its salvaged alien AI turns out to be a genuine threat, attacking the crew and infecting both of Joe's ships before Skippy manages to bring it under partial control. With Earth still cut off and facing eventual destruction, Joe evacuates the Avalon colony's remaining personnel and commits his reduced fleet to a campaign of hit-and-run raids on Maxolhx forces, disguised as the work of a rogue faction, meant to buy Earth time rather than secure outright victory. Alongside the military crisis, the crew works to save a severely injured officer, and Joe confronts his own guilt and growing feelings for her as the raids begin to accumulate real successes.
