Rose Hathaway, a dhampir training to guard the mortal Moroi vampires, and her best friend Lissa Dragomir, the last of a royal line, are captured after two years hiding among humans and returned to St. Vladimir's Academy. Rose is bound to Lissa by a rare psychic link and trains under the guardian Dimitri Belikov, with whom she shares a forbidden attraction. At school someone begins terrorizing Lissa with dead animals and threats, while Lissa manifests an unknown magic called spirit that lets her heal and influence others, at a growing cost to her mind. The menace turns out to be Victor Dashkov, a trusted family friend, who has engineered the harassment and even a charm to inflame Rose and Dimitri, all to force Lissa to heal his fatal illness with her spirit power. Victor kidnaps Lissa; Rose and Dimitri track them down and free her. Victor's daughter Natalie, who has willingly turned Strigoi to aid his escape, attacks Rose and is killed. Victor is captured, and it is revealed that Lissa long ago used spirit to bring Rose back from death, which created their bond and marked Rose as shadow-kissed.
