Tala later destroys an ancient reality prisoner by restoring the identity and death the prisoner denied, then absorbs the balanced cell into Kit. In a giant-wolf trial, Tala and Terry defeat a young wolf at severe cost. The wolf is later restored by its god-beast, leaving cautious cooperation possible. Tala and Rain begin courting, while Terry considers a soulbond and an outside threat may have noticed Tala's devourer resonance.

Previously: Tala entered this volume as a Refined defender of Alefast with command of iron and void. She shares her body with Alat, a distinct inner collaborator who supports her thinking and research. Terry is her flicker-teleporting flockmate and combat partner, while Flo is her soulbound, shape-changing weapon. Kit is a living dimensional refuge used by Tala's household, including Simon and Petra, and Tala has been working toward a soulbond with it. Rain is Tala's kinetic-mage friend and a former apprentice of the Paragon Grediv. Cazor trains with them as an iron specialist. Ingrit manages information and credit connected to Tala. These relationships place Tala at the center of both Alefast's defense and a growing household whose safety depends on the unusual powers surrounding Kit. Her established responsibilities therefore join public defense, personal advancement, and the care of companions whose lives are increasingly tied to her choices.

Tala completes her soulbond with Kit, repairing and advancing the living sanctum while gaining control over its openings and a place to send excess power. Elnia confirms that visitors can enter without being forced into a bond and begins teleportation work with Simon. After training with Rain and Cazor, Tala's improved perception reveals human gates and other intrusive detail she must learn to manage. In Banfast, the arcane dealer Lisa offers a purifier for Kit. Tala trades a combat memory for it, then learns that her dying mentor has disappeared and later died. Once integrated, the purifier fills Kit with dense, unbound natural magic. That environment overwhelms the gateless researchers Adrill and Brandon. To save them, Tala forms natural magical pathways in their bodies, giving them basic magical perception and cognitive enhancement. The intervention succeeds medically but changes their lives without consent. Kit is now safer for ordinary contents yet dangerous to unprepared people, and Tala must address the consequences for the two men and their families.

Adrill and Brandon's new natural magic may greatly extend their lives, leaving Tala burdened by the change she imposed while saving them. Grediv confirms that they remain human and explains that their abilities depend on dense ambient magic. Adrill's wife asks Tala for help pursuing enough advancement to share his longer future. Brandon's betrothed, Kedva, independently asks for the same transformation and accepts its risk. Tala restricts access to Kit and prepares carefully, while her emerging Paragon purpose shifts toward helping people pursue freely chosen goals. She also begins processing her mentor's death with Gert, Rain, and Simon and Petra's returning daughter. Kedva reaffirms her choice before her family and enters Kit for the procedure. Tala releases the sanctum's full density, controls the dangerous absorption, and uses prepared material as a template for new natural magic. She discovers that her authority inside Kit could control Kedva's body almost completely, rejects any claim of ownership, and continues only because stopping would endanger Kedva. By the end of the chapter, the irreversible remaking is still underway and its outcome is not yet known.

Kedva survives her transformation and emerges as a gateless human using arcane-style natural magic. Her strength and resilience are considerable in Kit but decline outside its dense power, so Tala and Rain begin training her. A highly advanced gateless adviser establishes retention and release exercises for Kedva, Adrill, and Brandon. He also warns that Kit could grant extraordinary longevity to trained residents, making its true value dangerous if powerful houses learn of it. Tala's grief eases as she discusses mortality and her mentor, while Gert demonstrates both his stone magic and his own way of living with loss. Wider interludes show other communities and powerful individuals responding to past events. Rain then begins a planned series of refinement sessions. The first process repeatedly damages and rebuilds his body, triggering uncontrolled kinetic blades. Tala enters the chamber, withstands the attacks, and helps redirect his unconscious focus until they stop. Rain survives but requires intensive recovery. Grediv admits that some candidates cannot finish refinement, and Tala forces him to withdraw a threat made while arranging for her to receive information Rain may not be told.

While Rain struggles to recover from his first refinement, Tala's unit enters a doomsday vault cell containing resources for rebuilding civilization. To retrieve its core, Tala opens a route into the Doman Emeth. Hostile entities there can invert her magic and erase parts of her magic-dependent existence. Kit consumes the vault, but Tala loses her lower body while extracting the core and must sever the damaged boundary so she can regenerate. She is removed from duty while healing. Kedva's arcane-like power later causes Tai, a void-and-kinetic mage hunter, to mistake her for an arcane, though official registration resolves the confrontation. Tai then exchanges magical theory with Tala and Rain. He identifies void as a boundary and finds an unused element in Flo's magic. Tala's attempt to add a reality component cracks the soulbound weapon, but she repairs it and suspends further reckless experimentation. Study with Kit deepens her command of void. Rain's assessment finds him about three-quarters of the way to Refined after one session and gives him a viable, though uncertain, chance of completing the process. The intensity and timing of future sessions remain his choice.

Tala separates Kit's newly acquired surplus space into Irondale, a settlement meant to house residents and provide resources she truly owns for eventual reforging. Her defender unit also seals a cell containing an entire city under a contagious sleeping curse, leaving its people alive but without a trusted cure. A wider interlude shows competing approaches to power and protection, including Jevin's dangerous attempt to reforge his own body. In Kit, Tala compresses water into an unfamiliar ice that converts further water into itself. It begins growing inside Simon, forcing Tala to remove the affected material before a healer restores his arm. The group destroys the ice and halts water-based siege experiments. Rain completes a second maximum-intensity refinement while Tala protects herself from his uncontrolled kinetic attacks. He remains unconscious for nine days, then wakes with lingering psychological trauma. Tala discovers new ways to move Kit's local manifestation and bring people inside. After a month, Rain is physically recovered and his projected chance of eventual success improves, but another session is delayed. Simon and Petra ask whether seeking refinement is worth the risk, and Tala still lacks a settled answer about longevity or eternity.

Rain completes a third refining session but suffers severe panic and trauma afterward. Tala remains with him through the immediate crisis, then supports his recovery as they defeat a siphon infiltration outside Alefast. Irondale develops into a low-magic community suitable for gateless families. Brandon and Kedva marry there, form a soulbond, and learn that Kedva is pregnant. Brandon later becomes Simon's full-time assistant, and the couple settles permanently at Irondale's edge while Kedva limits her magic for the pregnancy. Rain eventually tells Tala that he cannot face the final refinement and fears being left behind. Tala's family conversations make her reconsider her hopes for partnership and children without forcing a decision. Her younger sister chooses an ordinary life instead of magical advancement, and an experienced Archon tells Rain that stopping is a valid choice he may revisit. Back in Alefast, Tala merges reality nodes in a sparring space. The resulting region greatly resists ordinary magic while remaining easier for Tala and Terry to navigate. Grediv identifies it as a conceptual working, opening a new area of research just as Tala prepares to dismiss it safely.

The prisoner's gate suppresses magic and void, and her identity depends on rejecting her original name and death. Tala enters without Terry and refuses the prisoner's offer to eliminate gates. Their confrontation clarifies Tala's emerging purpose as a defender of gated humanity and a nurturer of magic. After losing an arm to direct reality erasure, Tala retrieves the prisoner's forgotten name from the archive and repeatedly restores the identity the woman denied. The prisoner's conceptual working breaks, her whole soul briefly returns, and she rejects passage onward before fading. Her accumulated reality power remains hazardous. A reforged backup mage channels immense natural magic through Tala's aura to balance it, while teaching her how reality, magic, and void constrain one another. Three days later, Kit consumes the stabilized cell and Tala begins replenishing the enlarged sanctum's power. She returns to Alefast and relies on Rain's quiet friendship while processing the mission. The dormant automaton in Kit remains unsafe to activate autonomously because soulless constructs are vulnerable to reality corruption.

More than two hundred people move into Irondale under controlled access and Tala's declared authority. A giant-wolf pack then arrives to test young Refined humans as a possible first step toward closer relations. Tala is the only eligible fighter present, and Terry joins as her recognized flockmate while Rain's fused state excludes him. With ordinary inscriptions disabled, Tala and Terry face a young wolf in a duel ending only in surrender or death. The wolf's speed, void attacks, healing, and subtle mental influence nearly overwhelm them. Terry wounds it with Flo but is badly hurt and withdraws on Tala's order. The wolf tears off Tala's left arm and leg, yet her accumulating claim over its iron steadily weakens it and finally kills it. Tala reattaches her limbs after her inscriptions return and consumes the body to recover. The pack grants limited acknowledgment, not an alliance. Rain identifies protecting people as his reason to continue advancing, and he and Tala begin courting without an engagement. The wolf's god-beast later restores it and directs it to learn from the loss. The wolf kills an outside observer that intended to report Tala's devourer resonance, though whether any warning escaped is unknown. Terry heals and privately considers, but does not accept, a soulbond with Tala.

Tala ends the reality prisoner's threat by restoring the identity and death the prisoner had denied. The reforged mage helps balance the released reality power, and Kit absorbs the stabilized cell. Tala and Terry then survive the giant-wolf trial, and Tala's victory earns only an opening toward future cooperation with the pack. Kit now contains a growing community and two recovered cells, but its exceptional magical density and dormant automaton require control. The sleeping city, hostile Doman Emeth entities, regional cell failures, Rain's refinement, wolf relations, and possible outside awareness of Tala's devourer nature remain unresolved.
