A talkative, reflective wanderer waiting beside a country road for a man named Godot. Vladimir tries to remember prior events, reason through the pair's situation, and keep their appointment in view. He is the more persistent of the two friends and repeatedly reminds Estragon why they cannot leave.

Vladimir's weary companion, first seen struggling to remove a painful boot. Estragon is preoccupied with hunger, sleep, beatings, and other immediate discomforts, and remembers less reliably than Vladimir. He often proposes leaving, yet remains with his friend to wait for Godot.

An imperious traveler who stops on the road while driving Lucky toward a market. Pozzo presents himself as a landowner and treats his companion as property, issuing orders while seeking attention and company from Vladimir and Estragon.

Pozzo's exhausted servant, burdened with luggage and controlled by a rope around his neck. Lucky rarely speaks and obeys commands to dance or think; when ordered to think aloud, he delivers a long, disintegrating torrent of language.

A timid messenger who arrives near the end of the day's wait. He says that he tends goats for Godot and has been sent to report that Godot will not come that evening but intends to come the next day.
