Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Siri (Protagonist)
Also known as Princess Siri
Appears from the start
The youngest princess of Idris, impulsive and less formally trained than her elder sister. When her father sends her to fulfill the treaty marriage with Hallandren's God King, she enters an unfamiliar court with little preparation and relies on observation, nerve, and her ability to adapt.
Vivenna (Protagonist)
Also known as Princess Vivenna
First appears in chapter 3
The eldest princess of Idris, raised from childhood to marry the God King and protect her homeland through duty. When Siri is sent in her place, Vivenna follows to Hallandren, determined to rescue her sister and apply the training that suddenly seems to have been taken from her.
Susebron (Supporting)
Also known as The God King
First appears in chapter 6
The God King of Hallandren, a Returned ruler believed to hold an immense store of magical Breath. Siri approaches him expecting a remote and dangerous monarch, but finds a sheltered, silent man whose priests tightly control access to him.
Vasher
Appears from the start
A highly skilled and secretive Awakener operating in T'Telir. He carries Nightblood and pursues objectives that initially make him look like a dangerous criminal, though his interest in the city's political violence is more focused than it first appears.
Nightblood (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A sentient sword carried by Vasher. Nightblood communicates directly with nearby minds, speaks with cheerful curiosity, and urges people to draw it against whatever it understands as evil, making the weapon as hazardous to its wielder as to an enemy.
Lightsong (Protagonist)
Also known as Lightsong the Bold
First appears in chapter 2
A Returned god of bravery who lives at the Hallandren court. Lightsong doubts the religion built around him and avoids responsibility through cultivated indifference, yet he notices inconsistencies around the court and feels compelled to investigate them.
Llarimar (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Lightsong's high priest, patient and unwavering in his belief that the Returned god has a purpose. He manages Lightsong's household, answers irreverence with calm loyalty, and tries to guide him toward the responsibilities he avoids.
Denth (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
A quick-witted mercenary hired by Vivenna's Idris contacts in T'Telir. He offers military experience, an irreverent education in Awakening, and practical plans for building resistance to Hallandren.
Tonk Fah (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
Denth's large, genial partner, whose jokes and apparent simplicity make him seem less dangerous than his work suggests. He helps Vivenna's group with surveillance, intimidation, and covert operations.
Bluefingers (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A palace scribe assigned to guide Siri through the God King's court. A member of the Pahn Kahl people, he explains Hallandren customs, conveys instructions from the priesthood, and becomes one of the few attendants who speaks candidly with her.
Treledees (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
The God King's high priest and the public voice of the royal priesthood. Formal and commanding, he enforces the rules surrounding Susebron and treats Siri primarily as part of a dynastic and religious obligation.
Blushweaver (Supporting)
Also known as Blushweaver the Beautiful
First appears in chapter 8
A politically ambitious Returned goddess at the Court of Gods. Confident, perceptive, and willing to use flirtation as leverage, she presses other gods to prepare Hallandren for war and takes a particular interest in Lightsong's military authority.
Jewels (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 16
The reserved Awakener in Denth's crew and the person chiefly responsible for maintaining their Lifeless companion, Clod. Her hostility toward Vasher is personal, and her loyalty to the mercenary team is stronger than her interest in Vivenna's politics.
Clod (Minor)
First appears in chapter 16
A powerful Lifeless soldier used by Denth's mercenary crew. Though animated and sustained through Awakening, he is generally treated as a tool and guard rather than as a living member of the group.
Parlin (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
A young Idris nobleman and Vivenna's loyal friend who accompanies her to T'Telir. He lacks her formal authority or the mercenaries' experience, but remains devoted to her safety as her plans grow riskier.
Dedelin (Supporting)
Also known as King Dedelin
Appears from the start
King of Idris and father of Vivenna and Siri. Bound by a treaty to send a daughter to the God King, he cannot bear to sacrifice the daughter trained for that fate and sends Siri instead, a choice that burdens both sisters and may endanger his kingdom.
