Warlord of Mars

By Edgar Rice Burroughs

Dejah Thoris is shut in a cell of the Temple of the Sun, a slowly turning prison deep beneath the Valley Dor that will not bring her door round again for a full Martian year, and John Carter has spent half that year keeping watch nearby, not knowing whether she is still alive. One night he trails Thurid, a noble of the black First Born who hates him, up the River Iss, and overhears him meeting Matai Shang, the deposed Father of Therns. Thurid claims to know a secret way into the temple's cells, and the two mean to carry off the princess. With only his huge Martian hound Woola at his side, Carter follows them in, and the pursuit that begins under the Golden Cliffs will take him far across Barsoom. The third Barsoom novel continues directly from The Gods of Mars.
