Hadjar helps Star Rain defeat the Underground Whisper Clan, enters the clan's hidden trial, and becomes a Thernian. Abraham Shensie secretly kills the Star Rain chief and uses the murder to build support for war against the Raven Sect. Hadjar and Lathea recover a key and steel, survive a vast anomaly, claim a Therna stone, and escape after a Lesket woman sacrifices herself to kill a pursuing immortal. They recruit Lesket troops for a northern expedition, but the Raven Sect ambushes the force, poisons Hadjar, and abducts Lathea. Hadjar purges the poison by uniting wind and flame, destroys the raiders, and wounds the sect master's seventh disciple with power from a thunderbird core given by the tortured Lesket mage. Hadjar and the mage are rescued in the north. The mage's soul is lost in ancestral memories, while Lathea remains alive as bait in the custody of supernatural wolves.

Hadjar holds the leader of the Underground Whisper Clan at bay while Abraham Shensie's party opens the city to Star Rain forces. With Gustaf's help, Hadjar gravely wounds her, and Abraham delivers the killing blow. Hadjar then promises safe passage to the defeated clan after its leader's son releases Lathea, bringing his word into conflict with Galanon's demand for revenge. The Star Rain chief grants Hadjar access to a hidden training site, but Abraham and Guy kill her outside it and disguise the murder as a Raven Sect attack. Within the trial, Hadjar experiences a troubling modern life as Boris and learns to join his will with his heart. He emerges as a Thernian who can align his will with that of the world. Abraham proposes recovering a missing key and steel, forging a duplicate, and using the resulting crisis to unite the Forty Families against the Raven Sect. Hadjar learns the truth about the chief's death but does not tell Lathea. The party divides, and Hadjar and Lathea depart together to find the genuine artifacts.

Hadjar and Lathea enter the City of Blue Roofs looking for allies in the search for the key and steel. After a public confrontation, a valley-family elder offers them places in his family’s expedition. They accept as independent partners, then persuade the expedition head to release members who are unlikely to survive the journey. An approaching wild god forces the group to flee through the jungle. Lathea directs the evacuation while Hadjar remains behind to delay the creature, which he identifies as Ancient Zaver. His power has increased sharply since the Star Rain trial, but he cannot direct it safely. He presses on despite grave injuries and completes a new opening technique in his developing sword art, killing Ancient Zaver and devastating the surrounding jungle and mountains. Hadjar survives with severe damage and takes a flame-bearing fragment from the dead creature. Lathea stabilizes his physical condition. Although they continue traveling under the valley family’s contract, Hadjar and Lathea privately intend to seize the key once the expedition reaches it.

Several weeks after Ancient Zaver’s death, the expedition reaches a fortified camp beside a deep gorge. The valley-family elder identifies Hadjar’s trophy as part of the wild god’s soul and relates a legend connecting its flame with the distant north. Rival treasure seekers approach, so the expedition head asks Hadjar and Lathea to descend with his daughter and nephew while the remaining force delays the competitors. Lathea requires the two younger fighters to follow her and Hadjar’s command. She explains that the steel has formed a spatial maze below and that the group should expect a powerful guardian. The gorge suppresses Hadjar and Lathea according to their connection with Therna, and an unknown force separates all four entrants. After another experience of an unfamiliar city life, Hadjar meets the maze’s sentient golem guardian. It says the others must face inner trials, but Hadjar is exempt because he already carries a fragment of its creator’s knowledge. The guardian is trapped in a cycle of yielding the Lightbringer knowledge and receiving it back.

The maze guardian shows Hadjar a memory of his parents preparing a demonic ritual before his birth. King Haver bargains with the Lord of Nightmares so Elizabeth can bear a son, permitting a raven-feather fragment to be placed in the unborn child's soul. The guardian then asks Hadjar for a final duel and dies by his hand, leaving behind the steel and related treasures. Hadjar secures the artifacts and challenges the rival force to settle ownership by single combat. His masked opponent proves to be Desert Mirage, a former friend now serving the Twilight Secret Sect. The two reconcile, and Desert Mirage deliberately concedes rather than fight Hadjar in earnest. Hadjar and Lathea leave with their payment and the genuine artifacts. Lathea swears to keep the nature of the key secret, while Alba Udun continues work on a forged duplicate for Abraham Shensie's larger plan. On the flooded return route, the Lord of Nightmares appears and confirms that Hadjar remains effectively bound to destroy the Raven Sect.

Hadjar and Lathea catch a vast Lesket trading caravan carried by a cloud-eating mule. Soon after they board, reality disintegrates around the caravan. Most travelers die, while Hadjar and Lathea reach the mule's protected hump with only a few hundred survivors. They awaken inside an anomaly where familiar natural laws no longer hold and even harmless-looking creatures possess deadly power. A Lesket governor gathers the strongest survivors, including a cloaked traveler who reveals himself as an immortal monkey sage. He explains that anomalies distort space and time and can sometimes be ended by destroying a central condition or link. His own direct action is restricted by heavenly law. The survivors cannot identify the anomaly's solution, and its atmosphere is gradually damaging their cultivation. The immortal organizes exploration parties, but Hadjar and Lathea distrust his convenient presence and hidden purpose. They refuse his plan and decide to investigate an exceptional pond on their own.

A silver carp draws Hadjar into a spirit reflection, where an ancient white dragon explains that the anomaly is itself a reflection and directs him to find a stone inscribed with a word he has already brought into the world. The dragon also predicts that a third meeting will end its life and transfer its power to Hadjar. After Hadjar returns, Lathea begins the search while he distracts the immortal monkey sage. Hadjar's attack reveals his true light of Therna, and the immortal answers with power far beyond mortal cultivation, leaving Hadjar badly wounded. Lathea finds and treats him as hostile exploration parties begin hunting them. The pair eventually reach a spiral of floating islands that Hadjar somehow remembers how to cross. The pursuing immortal tries to force the barriers and destroys much of the structure. His attack summons a colossal flaming guardian to restore balance. Hadjar and Lathea survive the initial clash, but the guardian, the immortal, and the remaining cultivators now stand between them and the summit.

Lathea holds back the immortal and his followers while Hadjar reaches the summit, ignoring its treasures to enter the first temple. A reflection shows the chained Nameless as the Black General, after which Hadjar wakes holding a stone marked Therna. The stone dissolves into his hand and the anomaly starts to collapse. Hadjar returns to Lathea, but the immortal kills his own followers and allies to erase all witnesses before demanding the temple object. Hadjar and Lathea fight him together and manage to wound him, though his final technique immobilizes them. A dying Lesket woman breaks an artifact, seizes the weakened immortal, and carries them both into a rift where they are destroyed. Hadjar and Lathea return to the caravan site almost immediately after the original disaster, despite their long experience inside the anomaly. They choose to detour to the Lesket clan so the woman's family will know that she died honorably. The Therna stone remains absorbed in Hadjar's palm, and its purpose is still unknown.

Hadjar and Lathea report the Lesket expedition's destruction and reach the clan capital, where the clan head's pacifist younger son receives them. During a tense audience, Hadjar recounts the final survivor's sacrifice and insists that her funeral honor the women among her ancestors. The clan head offers information about a possible route into the true North, but first tries to place Hadjar in a compromising first-blood duel against his eldest son. Lathea converts the private trap into a public contest. Before the duel, she and Hadjar discuss their unexplained sense of long familiarity and Hadjar's desire to avoid needless killing. A separate scene reveals that the queen of cold and darkness is summoning her imprisoned brother, the wolf of darkness, to a coming war and ordering him to kill the reborn vessel of Myristal. In the public duel, Hadjar neutralizes the eldest son's two-blade style, breaks both weapons, and stops at his throat with only a superficial cut. The defeated son accepts the lesson and calls Hadjar master.

Hadjar bargains for Lesket support rather than personal payment. The clan head provides a large body of warriors for the northern expedition but refuses to take a public position against the Twilight Secret Sect. At Lathea's insistence, the clan head's younger son joins the party as its mage. A white-turbaned wanderer coordinates the force. Hadjar tests the mage's ability to protect the expedition, first by attacking him and then by forcing him to confront a celestial thunderbird. The mage casts with exceptional speed, combines multiple elements, and traps the creature alive. Hadjar completes the kill without endangering him and gives him the thunderbird core as the reward he earned. Their disagreement over violence remains, but the mage wins Hadjar's trust. As the expedition approaches the mountain foothills, Lathea reveals a recurring childhood dream in which she dies defending an icy mountain. The group seeks one night's supplies and route information from a northern village before continuing.

The village chief grants the expedition shelter under strict hospitality customs, refuses payment, and requires the soldiers to leave at dawn. During the night, Hadjar dreams of a deceased friend who warns that Lathea needs him and offers a clue from the threshold of the ancestors' realm. Hadjar wakes poisoned amid a Raven Sect assault. The attackers burn the village and massacre both residents and expedition members while the campaign coordinator fights sect swordsmen. The village chief is mortally wounded after admitting the travelers. A raven bearing the Black General's voice directs Hadjar to use his dead friend's clue. Hadjar draws the surrounding fire and wind into himself, burns the poison from his body, and gains a dangerous but unstable command of flame alongside wind. He stops an incoming attack, but more than thirty Raven Sect fighters surround him. Lathea and the Lesket mage are missing, and the purpose and full scale of the ambush remain unclear.

Hadjar combines Therna, wind, and his temporary command of flame in an overwhelming sword attack. He kills the Raven Sect force's armored officer and eliminates the remaining raiders, while refusing to let his weapon absorb their Black General fragments because doing so could strengthen the hostile presence bound within him. The borrowed union of wind and fire fades as soon as the fight ends. The wounded campaign coordinator points Hadjar north, indicating that the missing members of the expedition were taken in that direction. Exhausted from the poison, transformation, and battle, Hadjar follows the abductors toward the mountains. Lathea and the Lesket mage remain missing, the village has been devastated, and the surviving condition of the wider expedition is not established.

Hadjar finds the Lesket mage alive but tortured in a canyon, guarded by the Raven Sect master's seventh disciple. The disciple reveals that an infiltrator poisoned Hadjar and that Lathea left Hadjar's coach before the attack. His spirit-incarnation sword technique overwhelms Hadjar. The mage sends Hadjar the thunderbird core, and the Black General instructs him to break it and complete his white lightning step. Hadjar combines that step with Star Flash and a wind sword, wounds the stronger disciple, and forces him to withdraw. He finds wolf tracks showing that Lathea was dragged farther north, then collapses. A northern host rescues Hadjar and the mage. Hadjar awakens seven nights later, still too weak to pursue. The mage's body survives, but his soul is lost among ancestral memories and may not return. The host has heard the dogs of the wolf of darkness and believes they are holding Lathea alive as bait for Hadjar. Her rescue, the mage's recovery, the northern campaign, and the war against the Raven Sect remain open.

The Raven Sect ambushes the northern expedition at its overnight refuge, massacres villagers and soldiers, poisons Hadjar, and carries Lathea away. Guided by a deceased friend and the Black General, Hadjar draws fire and wind together to purge the poison and annihilates the local raiding force. He follows the captives north, where the sect master's seventh disciple is torturing the Lesket mage. The mage gives Hadjar the thunderbird core, allowing him to complete his white lightning step and wound the disciple, who retreats. A northern host rescues Hadjar and the mage after Hadjar collapses. The mage remains alive but his soul is trapped among ancestral memories, and his recovery is uncertain. Lathea is alive farther north, apparently held by the wolf of darkness's forces as bait for Hadjar. Hadjar must recover before pursuing her. The campaign, Abraham Shensie's plan for the Forty Families, Hadjar's obligation to destroy the Raven Sect, the Black General's intentions, the Therna stone, and the threatened supernatural war all remain unresolved.
