Invited to an evening celebration at the Van Tassel farm, Ichabod enjoys the family's hospitality and listens to frightening stories, especially accounts of a headless Hessian rider. His private conversation with Katrina afterward leaves him dejected. Riding home through places associated with the legends, he is chased by a silent horseman apparently carrying his head. Near the church bridge, the pursuer hurls the head and strikes Ichabod. The schoolmaster disappears; only his horse, hat, and a broken pumpkin are recovered. Some believe a ghost took him, although a later report places him alive elsewhere. Brom marries Katrina and his reaction to the pumpkin story suggests that he may have disguised himself to remove his rival.

After the Van Tassel gathering, Katrina appears to reject Ichabod's courtship. He rides home alone through woods associated with local ghost stories and is pursued by a large rider who seems to be carrying his own head. At the church bridge, the rider throws the object at Ichabod, knocking him from his horse. Ichabod is gone the next morning; searchers find his hat beside a shattered pumpkin but no body. Most residents decide that the Headless Horseman carried him away, while a later traveler reports that Ichabod survived, left the district, and eventually entered law and politics elsewhere. Brom later marries Katrina and reacts knowingly whenever the pumpkin is mentioned, leaving open the possibility that he staged the chase and frightened his rival away.
