After selling his software company and arranging cryonic preservation for his own death, Bob is unexpectedly killed and wakes more than a century later as a software replica of his own mind, now the property of a company operating under a strict theocratic government. Placed in competition with several other replicated minds for a single assignment, he survives sabotage and rival programs to become the sole controller of a self-replicating interstellar probe built to search for habitable worlds. Escaping Earth under attack, Bob travels alone toward a distant star system, learning to operate remote robotic bodies while adjusting to a mission with no fixed endpoint.
