In short (whole book)
Staff Sergeant Rev encounters fighters posing as Centaurs and preserves evidence that they belong to another species. A separate alien invasion takes Waring, issues humanity an ultimatum, and destroys surrendering troops. As war expands, Rev helps expose that the humanoid and Centaur-like attackers are two forms of the same transforming enemy. Centaurs quietly improve Poshu to fight them, while Punch warns that Rev may be watched. On Mistworld, Rev assumes command after Bundy is incapacitated and wins a costly equal-force contest governed by the enemy's apparent honor code. Another human force loses a similar contest, obliging humanity to evacuate the planet. Rev returns to Tomiko, receives a major valor award, and sees military doctrine begin adapting to limited contests. The enemy still holds Waring and Mistworld, Poshu is damaged, Bundy's recovery is unresolved, and covert interest in Rev continues.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Staff Sergeant Rev is a veteran IBHU Marine whose combat system joins him with the integrated weapon unit Poshu and the embedded AI Punch. His history includes fighting at Kinshasa and participating in events that helped make peace possible between humanity and the Centaurs. That record leaves him known to former enemies as well as to military leaders overseeing hyper-augmented personnel. Rev serves with First Heavy Infantry alongside longstanding comrades, including Yancey, Udu, Cricket, and Bundy. His partner, Tomiko, is also an IBHU Marine, but resurrection has left her facing a difficult rehabilitation and an uncertain return to duty. Humanity's use of enhanced soldiers remains politically sensitive even as Rev and the surviving members of the original IBHU group continue to serve.
Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)
On Brahma Loka, Rev leads a patrol ordered to find the Centaurs' main force without making contact. Five apparent Centaur infantry discover the Marines. One is killed, but four escape, compromising the mission. The dead fighter is stronger and more heavily integrated with its armor than expected, so Rev takes a tissue sample. Enemy artillery and a new anti-air weapon then force the company into a costly evacuation. The supposed Centaurs abandon the moon before a counterattack and destroy its mines. Rev tells senior Marines that the opponents did not fight or feel like Centaurs, but his suspicion remains disputed. During a private debrief, Major Singal reveals that scientific personnel share his concern. Rev turns over the preserved sample, providing the command with its only available biological evidence. The public position still blames Centaurs while preparations for retaliation continue.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Rev spends leave with Tomiko, who is rebuilding control of her augmentations after resurrection and intends to earn her way back into the Marines. His suggestion that she accept retirement and marry him causes an argument, but he apologizes and supports her decision. Rev also begins training with a blade installed beneath Poshu's projector. A civilian instructor demonstrates that strength alone will not compensate for poor technique. News of attacks attributed to Centaurs spreads, although Centaur representatives deny responsibility. A classified alert then brings Rev back to Camp Nguyen, where footage from the destroyed Aurelius station proves that the attackers are a newly encountered nonhuman species. The base enters lockdown and rapidly expands its forces. Udu is recalled, Cricket is placed on standby, and Rev's longtime friend Bundy takes command of Third Platoon. The troops train for an operation whose purpose and relationship to the apparent Centaur attacks remain unclear.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
The new aliens invade Waring, and Rev's unit deploys under strict secrecy after Tomiko declines his proposal for an immediate automated wedding. On Waring, civilians are told that Centaurs are responsible while the rescue force crosses to occupied Silverland. More than eight thousand invaders disappear from surveillance and concentrate in a mine system that denies the humans their usual armor, air, and orbital advantages. Rev's platoon enters the tunnels after another battalion is devastated. The aliens move across walls and ceilings, seek close combat, and force the Marines to retreat through a blocked entrance. Rev and an injured IBHU lance corporal escape before engineers collapse the tunnel. Humanity then abandons the operation, leaving Waring's occupied territory and captured civilians behind. During the withdrawal, Punch displays unexpected spontaneity and uncertainty about its own changes. Rev begins to suspect that the AI may be altered or observed, adding a private concern to the military defeat.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Waring falls after a hostile fleet destroys its orbital defenses. Rev attends a classified conference where hyper-augmented personnel from several governments recognize their shared position as valuable but mistrusted assets. He and a former MDS opponent from Kinshasa reach a guarded understanding, and authorities temporarily permit new hyper-augments. Public disclosure of the invasion causes widespread instability. Major Singal's analysis separately confirms that Rev's Brahma Loka specimen is neither Centaur nor closely related to one, showing that humanity faces more than one alien adversary. A lone envoy from the Waring invaders then reaches Titan and demands humanity's submission, threatening destruction while refusing negotiation between equals. Soon afterward, footage from Heverig shows the invaders killing surrendered soldiers and their commander. Rev resolves not to surrender to them. Meanwhile, the IBHU program expands at wartime speed, and the newly augmented lance corporal Hawk arrives with Scorpion before reaching full combat readiness.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Rev adapts his blade training to exploit IBHU strength, then deploys with a large allied force to a fortified world expected to be attacked. When the aliens arrive, Third Platoon helps draw their infantry toward the fort's concentrated armor. Rev's small team finds a neighboring platoon destroyed and leaves one grievously wounded survivor for later recovery while completing the lure. The fort defeats the infantry assault, and Rev insists on honoring his promise to return. Bundy supports him. The platoon rescues the survivor and three possible resurrection candidates, though thirty-five others are permanently lost. During the recovery, previously unknown alien tanks and troop carriers approach. Rev's Marines ambush and delay the column long enough for the fort to prepare, losing another Marine in the process. Allied armor ultimately wins at severe cost. The enemy then withdraws in good order, while human formations have suffered catastrophic casualties. Rev suspects the campaign may have been a deliberate test rather than an attempt to hold the planet.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Laboratory analysis confirms that the human-like invaders and the fighters who resembled Centaurs are one species. Further study shows their cells changing between the two body plans, validating the possibility of biological transformation while leaving its purpose unknown. Tomiko passes her evaluation and returns to active status, although she must complete a refresher program before rejoining heavy infantry. The original Centaurs, now opposed to the transforming enemy, secretly offer technical aid. They select Rev because of his earlier contact with them and rapidly rebuild Poshu with smoother movement, greater efficiency, a directional shield, and a powerful new beam mode suited to fighting the invaders. Command permits only half of the IBHU systems to receive the improvement because the Centaurs could have concealed a way to disable it. Punch also warns that connecting to other systems may give the unknown observer another channel into Rev's equipment. Humanity therefore gains a valuable weapon without resolving either strategic distrust or Rev's surveillance concern.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
A multinational force deploys to Mistworld, where mist, jamming, and native spores undermine human sensors, communications, and health. An unseen sniper kills Marines at a remote post. Spores then incapacitate many personnel, including Bundy, leaving Rev to command Third Platoon when the aliens attack. The platoon helps restore the perimeter, while the upgraded IBHU weapons prove effective. Sent to find a missing raider platoon, Rev discovers its members dead but potentially recoverable. An alien emissary proposes a contest between equal numbers without aircraft or armored vehicles. Rev accepts a thirty-four-against-thirty-four fight, excludes support personnel, and attacks with coordinated fire and an enveloping force. His platoon defeats all thirty-four opponents and withdraws with its own dead. Eleven Marines are lost, and Poshu's primary beam and 20 mm weapon are damaged. The larger alien force does not interfere, suggesting that it recognizes the negotiated limits, but the rules and strategic meaning of such contests remain uncertain.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Rev explains his Mistworld victory as a response to the enemy's preference for swords, equal numbers, and bounded equipment. Five fallen Marines remain preserved for likely resurrection, while an injured corporal permanently loses a leg. Division tests Rev's theory in another equal-sized engagement. The human company loses, and the accepted terms require humanity to surrender Mistworld. The allied force completes an orderly evacuation, leaving the planet to the transforming enemy. A naval investigator tells Rev that his belief in honor-based testing matches one school of official analysis, although it remains unproven. Back at base, a covert-division interrogator makes clear that Rev is still being watched. Tomiko completes retraining and returns to the company. Three months later, doctrine is changing to account for the enemy's limited-combat rules, and governments reconsider the value of expanded hyperaugmentation. The company receives a unit citation, Rev receives a major valor award, and Tomiko is serving as a platoon sergeant. Rev remains with her and prepares for a war that is still unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Human forces leave Mistworld after another unit loses an agreed equal-force engagement whose terms require surrender of the planet. Rev's own platoon has won a similar contest, but eleven Marines are lost and Poshu's principal weapons are damaged. His theory that the enemy seeks bounded, honor-based tests gains official attention without becoming settled intelligence. Three months later, the company receives a unit citation and Rev is decorated for his earlier role in saving the fortified task force. Tomiko has completed retraining, returned to the company, and become a platoon sergeant; she and Rev remain together but unmarried. Bundy was incapacitated by Mistworld spores, and his final medical status is not established. Punch remains with Rev, continues behaving unpredictably, and warns of surveillance. The transforming enemy holds Waring and Mistworld, the Centaurs' assistance remains cautiously restricted, governments are reconsidering expanded hyperaugmentation, and a covert division still shows interest in Rev as the war enters its next phase.
