Marcus, the boy who struck Sal, talks with her about time travel and argues that a person might experience time differently while everyone else continues normally. His ideas give Miranda a possible framework for the notes, even though she cannot imagine who would travel to her or why. At Jimmy's shop, tensions arise among the children and their employer, testing Miranda's new loyalties. She also begins to recognize how often she has judged Annemarie, Julia, and Sal without understanding their perspectives.

A further note predicts a sequence of small events with enough precision to establish that its author truly knows what will happen. It instructs Miranda to remember where a key is hidden and repeats that the account she writes will be needed to save a life. Miranda works to repair the hurt around Annemarie and Julia and becomes more honest about her own jealousy. When Marcus tries to speak with Sal, Sal panics and runs into the street toward an oncoming truck. The Laughing Man throws himself into Sal's path, knocking the boy clear and dying in the collision. In the aftermath, Miranda begins connecting the man's actions, the missing key, Marcus's theories, and the messages. The predicted rescue has occurred, but she still has to understand who arranged it and why her letter matters.

Miranda realizes that the Laughing Man was Marcus from the future. The older Marcus traveled back to undo the consequence he had regretted since childhood: his unprovoked punch made Sal flee him, creating the danger in the street, so he returned to save Sal by sacrificing himself. His odd routines helped him reach the exact required moment, and the notes ensured that Miranda would preserve the explanation. Miranda completes the account addressed to him and gives the younger Marcus both the letter and a photograph that will help him recognize what happened. She and Sal begin to reconnect while accepting that each now has other friends and a separate identity. Miranda's mother performs successfully on the game show after all their preparation. The mystery closes as Miranda understands that her narrative is part of the chain that allowed the future rescue to take place.

When Sal runs into the street to escape Marcus, the Laughing Man knocks Sal away from an oncoming truck and is killed in his place. His apparently meaningless habits had helped place him at the necessary instant, while his notes guided Miranda to prepare a written explanation for the younger Marcus. Miranda and Sal begin repairing their friendship, now with room for separate lives. Miranda finishes the letter that forms the book and gives it, with a photograph, to Marcus so he can understand what he will one day do. Her mother succeeds on the game show, and the family looks forward with greater security and a renewed place for Richard in their lives.
