Previously, across the first four books: On storm-swept Roshar, a slave-turned-soldier named Kaladin rose to become a Windrunner; the artist Shallan Davar became a Lightweaver; and Highprince Dalinar Kholin, guided by storm-visions, reunited his people, recovered the lost city of Urithiru, and grew into a Bondsmith bonded to the spirit of the storm. When a second, dark storm awakened the world's servile parshmen into the returning enemy's armies, the true Desolation began. The god of hatred, Odium, and his immortal Fused warriors waged war, and a coalition led by the Kholins fought to unite the nations and restore the Knights Radiant. Along the way Dalinar faced the atrocities of his own past and refused Odium's temptation; the Alethi capital fell and its king was murdered by the embittered Moash, who joined the enemy; Jasnah Kholin took the throne. The enemy seized Urithiru before Navani Kholin bonded the tower's guardian to reclaim it and became a Bondsmith herself, while Kaladin spoke a further oath and the Windrunner ranks grew. Then the war turned: the seemingly gentle King Taravangian, long a secret traitor, outmaneuvered and killed Odium and seized the divine power, becoming a new and far more cunning god of hatred. A contest of champions was agreed to settle the war on a fixed near-future date, and both sides now maneuver toward that reckoning.

This final volume opens with the war rushing toward a decisive endpoint. Dalinar's coalition faces a fixed, fast-approaching deadline: a contest of champions with the new god of hatred that will determine the fate of the world, and the narrative is framed as a countdown of days until that confrontation. The enemy, now ruled by the coldly calculating Taravangian in Odium's place, presses on every front while the coalition scrambles to prepare, protect its allied nations, and settle old wounds before time runs out. The heroes are scattered to different fronts and personal reckonings as the clock ticks down, each carrying the burdens of four books of war toward a climax none of them can avoid.
