The stern, powerful senior witch of Lancre, who has never traveled far and openly disapproves of foreign parts. When the youngest witch is handed a distant mission, Granny invites herself along rather than be left out, bringing her formidable will and deep suspicion of magic that meddles with people's lives to a journey across the Disc.

The cheerful, earthy Lancre witch, delighted by the prospect of travel, foreign food, and drink. Warm and shameless where Granny is severe, she throws herself into the trip abroad with enthusiasm and a mangled grasp of foreign languages, and never travels without her bad-tempered cat.

The youngest and most earnest of the three witches, who unexpectedly inherits a fairy godmother's wand and a task left unfinished by its previous owner. Eager to do things properly and to prove herself, she leads the others on a long journey to a far-off city to carry the mission out, with her elders determinedly tagging along.

An elderly Lancre witch who also worked as a fairy godmother, and who knows she is about to die. Before she goes she arranges for her wand, and an unfinished duty in a distant city, to pass to Magrat rather than to another, more dangerous godmother.

Nanny Ogg's enormous, scarred, one-eyed grey tomcat, a terror to every other animal for miles. Fiercely territorial and permanently ill-tempered, he accompanies the witches on their travels, to the alarm of most creatures they meet.

A young woman in the far-off city of Genua at the heart of the fairy-godmother mission. A powerful figure is determined that she shall marry a prince, whether she wishes it or not, and Magrat's inherited task is to travel there and stop the wedding from taking place.
