Wonder recap

August Pullman, a ten-year-old with severe facial differences, leaves home schooling to enter fifth grade at Beecher Prep. He meets open cruelty from Julian, uncertain friendship from Jack Will, and immediate kindness from Summer. After overhearing Jack speak harshly about him, Auggie withdraws, but Jack understands the damage, defends him, and repairs their friendship. The story also follows Auggie's sister Via, who loves him while struggling with how completely his needs shape their family. Auggie receives a school medal for courage and character and a standing ovation, and he thanks his mother for sending him to school.

Ten-year-old August Pullman has undergone many operations because of the facial differences with which he was born. After years of home schooling, his mother enrolls him in fifth grade at Beecher Prep. Principal Tushman arranges a tour with Jack Will, Charlotte, and Julian. Charlotte is courteous, Jack is approachable, and Julian makes pointed comments about Auggie's face. Once classes begin, many pupils avoid touching or sitting near Auggie. He draws strength from his family and from Mr. Browne's classroom precepts about kindness. Summer voluntarily joins him at lunch and becomes a genuine friend, while Jack regularly spends time with him. Auggie begins to believe he can manage school. On Halloween, however, he enters class in a costume nobody recognizes and overhears Jack telling Julian that he would harm himself if he looked like Auggie and that he was only asked to be Auggie's friend. Auggie leaves school devastated, without telling Jack what he heard.

Via describes growing up in a family whose attention naturally centers on Auggie's health. Starting high school gives her a chance to be known independently, but her childhood friends Miranda and Ella have changed and drift away. Via befriends Eleanor and dates Justin, yet avoids explaining Auggie to them because she wants one part of life untouched by his story. Meanwhile, Summer refuses pressure to abandon Auggie and gives Jack a clue about why Auggie stopped speaking to him. Jack realizes that Auggie heard his Halloween remarks. When Julian insults Auggie, Jack punches Julian and is suspended. Jack apologizes, Auggie forgives him, and their friendship resumes. Julian then organizes classmates against Jack, splitting the grade into sides. Summer and Jack remain loyal to Auggie as the school year continues.

Justin becomes close to Via and meets the Pullmans. He notices both their warmth and the pressures around Auggie, and he quietly frightens off boys who have been troubling Jack. Via earns the lead in her school production after Miranda, cast as the understudy, claims illness and gives up the performance. The whole Pullman family attends despite Via's earlier wish to keep her school life separate, and Auggie is proud of her. Miranda reveals that she has missed the Pullmans and had exaggerated stories about them at camp because their family life made her feel secure. The performance helps reconnect her with Via. At home, the family is shaken when Daisy becomes gravely ill and dies. The shared grief draws them together, and Via recognizes that her parents can support her even while much of their attention remains focused on Auggie.

Auggie's class travels to a nature retreat. Away from home overnight for the first time, he enjoys activities with Jack and other classmates. During an outdoor movie, a group of older students from another school corner Auggie and mock his face. Amos, Miles, Henry, and Jack intervene, and the Beecher pupils escape together after a fight. Auggie realizes he has lost one of his hearing aids, but the stronger change is social: boys who once kept their distance have risked themselves to protect him. News of the incident spreads without Auggie having to explain it, and classmates begin treating him with open respect. The old division encouraged by Julian loses force. Auggie returns home exhausted but more secure in his place among his peers.

The school year ends with Auggie no longer isolated. Julian will not return to Beecher Prep, while Jack, Summer, Amos, and other classmates gather around Auggie as friends. At graduation, Mr. Tushman speaks about the importance of showing greater kindness than circumstances demand. He awards Auggie the Henry Ward Beecher medal, recognizing the courage and example that changed the school community. The audience rises in a sustained ovation. Auggie understands that he has influenced people, but also thinks of the family, friends, and teachers who helped him survive the year. After photographs and celebration, the Pullmans walk home together. Auggie thanks his mother for making him go to school, and she answers by telling him that he is a wonder.

At the fifth-grade graduation ceremony, Mr. Tushman speaks about choosing kindness and presents Auggie with the school's Henry Ward Beecher medal for the quiet courage and positive influence he has shown throughout the year. The entire audience gives Auggie a standing ovation. He recognizes that many people helped carry him through the difficult months, while his classmates now see him as a friend rather than a spectacle. Julian will not return to Beecher Prep, and the social division he encouraged has largely dissolved. Via's relationship with her family is steadier after the strain surrounding her play and Daisy's death, and Miranda has reconnected with the Pullmans. As the family walks home after taking photographs, Auggie thanks his mother for making him attend school. She tells him that he is a wonder, closing the year with his difference still present but no longer defining the limits of his world.
