Previously: Freddy Stern survived earlier dangers as a powerful two-star arch-human, but remained exposed and unable to live openly. Bloodshed continued as his bound, sentient companion. Sophia survived catastrophic injuries only as a disembodied head, leaving Freddy with a limited chance to restore her body.

Freddy bargains with a life-affinity spirit for a permanent new face, then spends nearly three months crossing the Northern Spine into the Northern Belt. His first attempt at employment ends when he discovers that Jeffrey's business relies on extortion and human trafficking. Bloodshed kills the employer, leaving Freddy with a forged local identity as Freddy Cliff but no lasting position. Elsewhere, imperial punishment strips Basilisk of his fourth star. Basilisk forces Mark and Nahar to accompany him into northern exile by threatening to expose the two body snatchers under their protection. Freddy settles in a comparatively orderly city, sells captured storage rings, buys a home, and spends most of his money on an uncertain reconstruction of Sophia's body. Seeking allies rather than another master, he studies the local factions and becomes interested in Valhalla, led by Thor. At a passage hub he meets Lucas Black, an impoverished mortal seeking a prime vestige. Freddy offers training and protection. Lucas reveals that his mother's gambling has placed her deep in debt, and the pair discover that loan sharks have abducted her.

Freddy pays for Helen Black's release, then kills the loan-business staff after they threaten him and refuse responsibility for her injuries. Lucas and Helen move into Freddy's home, but the operation draws Jason Jem, Helen's former partner and an operative of a powerful local family. Freddy ambushes and kills Jason, disguising the deaths as a wild-spirit attack. The connection remains unproved, though local factions begin investigating. While gathering money for his growing obligations, Freddy discovers a one-person dungeon with extreme time dilation. Bloodshed experiences a century inside while only a short time passes outside, revealing a possible path to decades of training if Freddy can finance survival. Thor, meanwhile, deliberately accepts a lasting soul scar to lower his advancement and avoid imperial removal from the Northern Belt. In the fortress dungeon, Thor and Travis invite Freddy to join Valhalla. Freddy postpones his answer and enters under the name Slave to practice ranged attacks. Valhalla's public familiarity with him nevertheless creates the appearance of an alliance as the dungeon siege escalates from mortal attackers to arch-human soldiers.

During the fortress siege, Freddy refines his Blood Javelins and notices Janice, a delver whose soul construct can manipulate ambient aura. Sean Jem grants Freddy an unholy blessing that trades temporary bodily function for enormous strength. Freddy uses it to help rout the final army, then conceals the true extent of his recovery. Thor and Travis remain suspicious of his healing but negotiate a partnership in which Freddy and Valhalla may request paid work from each other without subordination. Basilisk's exile party crosses the border and settles in another Northern Belt city to establish a business. Freddy accepts Valhalla's invitation to raid an organ-trafficking site associated with Strata. Thor equips him and integrates him into the assault plan. Freddy leads the breach, suffers severe burns, and continues fighting against orders. The raid frees captives and captures the lead doctor, whom Freddy recognizes as the physician scheduled to reconstruct Sophia. Freddy reveals Sophia's condition to Thor, who spares the doctor as a favor while making Freddy responsible for any future wrongdoing. The raid deepens Freddy's connection to Valhalla, but its proceeds are far below what he needs for advancement, pushing him toward wealthier criminal targets.

Freddy secretly follows Sean Jem into an isolated realm and murders him for his wealth. Thor's tracking rune exposes enough of the act for him to confront Freddy. Freddy admits the planned killing and accepts Thor's argument that he executed Sean without offering any chance to change. Valhalla helps liquidate the loot while warning that the Jem family may retaliate. Lucas becomes an arch-human with a speed-oriented prime, and Helen begins treatment for gambling. Freddy's abilities improve rapidly under a stricter routine. He then takes Lucas into the fortress dungeon for controlled training, but hidden assassins seal the exit and use the dungeon waves to exhaust them. Freddy kills the attackers, survives a heart-stopping parasite, and battles through stronger waves after Lucas's throat is cut. A vast Blood Sacrifice construct breaks the barrier, allowing Freddy to carry Lucas to healers. Lucas survives, though badly weakened. Bloodshed finishes the dungeon, which transforms into peaceful farmland and rewards Freddy with the Warrior King's pendant. Recognizing that Lucas needs greater protection, Thor accepts him as a Valhalla trainee and houses both Lucas and Helen at headquarters.

Thor offers private training and resources if Freddy remains with Valhalla until a successor is found and discloses a consequential secret. Thor becomes his technical mentor, identifies dangerous flaws in his improvised build, and develops ways to reduce the backlash from Freddy's strongest techniques. Freddy complies and begins an intensive program that improves his movement, defenses, blood weapons, and ranged accuracy. The long-awaited reconstruction saves Sophia's life, but her left arm and leg cannot be preserved. She wakes without memory, speech, recognition of Freddy, or apparent access to her talent. Freddy's frustration frightens her. He then channels his grief into a reckless Valhalla raid, killing powerful opponents while ignoring the plan. Thor removes him from operations for a week. Sophia is moved into Valhalla's care with her future uncertain, while Freddy's instability now threatens the trust that made his mentorship and faction partnership possible.

Sophia shows only slow and uncertain improvement, and available care cannot restore what she has lost. Freddy turns to an illegal plan for financing the Century of Solitude. After an initial doctor recognizes that his regenerated organs are too perfect to sell safely, Freddy kills him, produces less conspicuous replacements, and negotiates anonymous sales through a Strata-linked operation. The scheme soon gives him hundreds of millions. Thor bars him from future raids but assigns him to guard Valhalla and explore its concealed underground passage. Freddy gives a rare cache of concentrated blood aura to Bloodshed rather than use it himself. The resource transforms Bloodshed into a hooded skeletal form with new weapons, movement, and corrosive attacks. Freddy also gains Crimson Dragon Scales and clears many passage realms while advancing his abilities and preparing isolation supplies. His most powerful upgraded techniques remain dangerously self-destructive. Inside Valhalla, Charlie King openly attacks Thor's support of Freddy, revealing serious factional resentment. At the same time, Lucas and Helen split over her wish to leave Valhalla. Lucas now lives with Janice and insists on safeguards, while Helen rejects his account of her gambling and confinement.

Gina Jem and her brother develop an unproven theory linking the organ seller Skull, the dungeon fighter Slave, and a hidden killer to Valhalla. Freddy continues extreme training, accumulates more than a billion dollars, and returns to visible raids, but his violence frightens allies. Helen tells Keegan Jem that Valhalla confined her and manipulated Lucas. Keegan accepts her account and hires a near-peak-three-star armored assassin. Freddy begins improving his relationship with Valhalla's residents, aided by Lucas and Janice, and develops genuine concern for the faction's poor and bereaved families. Charlie King then deceives Lucas by claiming Helen is captive and delivers him to the Jems. Lucas rejects their claim that he was brainwashed and is forcibly held. The assassin attacks Valhalla. Freddy joins Thor despite orders to stay away, and their combined attacks damage the killer, but both defenders suffer terrible injuries. Thor activates a life-consuming last resort, forcing the assassin to flee, then dies. Travis takes emergency command and begins evacuation and negotiation. With Lucas still captive and Valhalla near collapse, Freddy gathers his supplies and enters the Century of Solitude.

Freddy survives roughly fifty subjective years in the isolated dungeon while little more than an hour passes outside. Bloodshed is his only companion as he trains, hallucinates, suffers a suicidal episode, and eventually brings most of his usable abilities to their next upgrade threshold. The exit leads to a sealed cabin hosted by Insanity, a truth-bound primordial concept construct. Insanity presents selectable spirits as the trial's reward. Freddy uses them to advance a broad range of blood and water abilities toward the third star, improving his reserves, weapons, defenses, tempering, movement, projectiles, and finishing attacks. A final choice remains between a gem for binding a four-item cursed set, a unique affinity shard, and a unique prime spirit that alternates slower and faster personal time. Freddy has not selected one when the book ends. Outside, Travis prevents Valhalla from fighting while rival factions demand its dissolution, forced labor for noncombatants, and execution or coercive punishment for fighters. Keegan seeks Freddy Cliff and the figures called Slave and Skull. The adjudicator supervises without declaring for either side. Lucas remains captive, Thor is dead, Sophia remains gravely impaired, and an unidentified man interrupts the unresolved negotiation.

Thor dies after invoking a life-consuming ability to drive Keegan Jem's armored assassin away from Valhalla. Lucas remains a prisoner of the Jem family after Charlie King lures him out with a threat involving Helen, while Helen supports the family's claim that Valhalla manipulated her son. Travis assumes emergency leadership and tries to prevent a suicidal defense. Under the imperial adjudicator's supervision, the rival factions demand Valhalla's dissolution, forced labor for its noncombatants, and death or imprisonment for its fighters. An unidentified man interrupts before terms are settled. Freddy enters the Century of Solitude immediately after Thor's death and experiences roughly fifty years with Bloodshed while little more than an hour passes outside. He emerges with extensive stage-three upgrades to his blood and water abilities, but has not chosen the trial's final reward. Sophia is alive but still lacks her memory, speech, talent access, and two left limbs. Freddy's immediate unresolved aims are rescuing Lucas, preserving Valhalla, and answering Thor's death.
