Keith and Kidra rebuild House Winterscar while Keith studies a concealed occult archive. He learns to move through soul fractals, recreates occult blades, and develops rifle-fired occult anti-armor rounds that let ordinary soldiers threaten Relic Knights. Relinquished divides its forces: To’Aacar moves against the surface clan, while a Feather besieges Undecider City using captive Tenisent's abilities. Kidra later defeats the Feather's shell at the Stretch fortress but cannot free their father, and the defenders retreat. At home, machine-aligned Chosen refugees become both a security risk and a possible military asset. Disguised slavers then attack the colony seeking Keith. Atius is apparently assassinated, with an occult blade left in his empty armor that Keith believes will delay his return. House Winterscar's soldiers save Keith at great cost, Journey helps him break the assault, and he rescues Ellie. The slaver leader escapes, Shadowsong assumes emergency leadership, and the Feather ends the book questioning Relinquished while preparing to force Undecider City's surrender.

Previously: Keith Winterscar and his sister Kidra belong to House Winterscar, and Tenisent is their father. Keith wears the Relic armor Journey. He has recovered a seeker connected to Journey, while his earlier involvement with Relinquished and To’Aacar has left him and the objects he carries in danger.

Keith and Kidra receive a secured message from an unidentified digital researcher who opposes Relinquished. It links Keith's recovered seeker and Mites to an old weapon that Relinquished concealed but could not destroy. Following supplied coordinates with Atius, they uncover an Indagata Mortis archive about the occult. Journey prevents Keith from reading it, so Atius assigns him a private investigation. Relinquished responds by ordering To’Aacar to capture Keith and by giving a Feather command of a separate army. The Feather holds Tenisent's soul and uses his memories to locate House Winterscar. To’Aacar heads toward the surface clan, while the Feather begins planning the conquest of Undecider City. On the return journey, Atius captures a pirate force without a fight. Three seized relic armors go to Shadowsong candidates, including Anka and Locke. After learning that a large raider coalition is preparing to attack, Atius trades the eventual return of those armors for pirate aid. Underground, the Feather adopts a strategy of blockade, deprivation, and coerced conversion rather than immediate destruction.

Keith and Kidra return to Clan Altosk as the two armored members of House Winterscar. Kidra inherits Winterscar Prime, assumes leadership of the house, and begins an ambitious expansion. Keith hides the seeker and occult journal in a neglected part of the estate, then establishes a secret workshop. The journal teaches him that powered fractal patterns can impose concepts on reality. He enters a soul fractal, develops occult fire, and learns to perceive active fractals while remaining partly connected to his body. Examination of Winterscar Prime reveals that its ancient protective soul is separate from Tenisent's residual soul, which was left behind in the bunker. Recovering their father becomes a long-term objective. Journey's records also reveal that a former wearer served the Indagata Mortis, an order of the Solaris Imperium preparing for a machine war. Keith activates a cognitive engram modeled on that crusader. The simulation becomes his instructor as he refines occult perception, learns to shape effects by intent, and proposes an untested shortcut to advanced armored movement.

Keith creates a soul-fractal control method that lets Journey move at exceptional speed while preserving most of his senses. Atius visits House Winterscar and sharply limits occult research, warning that easy power may be bait designed to expose its users. He permits work on soul fractals and weapons, while a remote heater will serve as a controlled test. Keith studies an occult knife, identifies the hidden pattern in its hilt, and carefully exposes it without destroying the weapon. He then copies the pattern and produces a working occult blade. Kidra masters his movement method, which they call Winter Blossom. Meanwhile, the Feather absorbs an ex-human camp and becomes increasingly curious about human experience, even modifying her body to taste food. Kidra marks House Winterscar's renewal with a feast for its growing membership. She raises long-serving household members into the house and establishes equal treatment at the table. Keith's careless display of occult fire creates rumors that he is a warlock, but the secret remains contained. The celebration ends when Atius summons both Winterscar Relic Knights to arms.

With a major attack approaching, Atius sends Kidra and a knightly escort toward Capra-Nor to request aid. Keith remains behind as acting head of House Winterscar. The Shadowsong Prime, fearing for Anka, challenges Keith to verify that Winter Blossom is real. Keith wins their dangerous duel, and the Prime accepts both the result and responsibility for his conduct. Atius then learns that Keith can manufacture occult blades and gives him authority to decide how closely to hold the discovery. Underground, the Feather captures a hunting lodge by drawing upon Tenisent's combat skills, releases many prisoners to spread word of her surrender terms, and equips Chosen followers with captured armor. The main clan expedition returns early after a raider ambush, accompanied by machine-aligned Chosen refugees whose knights helped it survive. Their priest says machine alterations allow them to travel safely underground. Atius shelters the group under guard, refusing to punish desperate civilians without proof, but treats their arrival as a likely trap. Keith and the Shadowsong Prime are assigned to investigate while the Chosen remain contained guests.

Keith and Shadowsong prepare false information about the yellow sphere to expose any Chosen infiltrator. The Chosen priest publicly argues that altered humans can live safely under machine rule, but Atius challenges the claim and negotiates privately. The priest commits all twenty-three Chosen knights against raider staging grounds in exchange for more time under clan protection. Atius treats this as a loyalty test and tells allied house leaders that Keith has solved occult-blade production. At the same time, the Feather completes the capture of Undecider City's outposts and attacks the Stretch fortress. Chosen infiltrators disable much of its defense before elite knights intervene. Kidra holds the Feather in a direct duel while her allies try to recover the turrets. Tenisent resists from within his captor and helps Kidra survive. Kidra and her allies disable and pin the Feather's current shell, and Kidra reaches her father through Winterscar Prime, but the Feather threatens to detonate the shell. Tenisent surrenders his chance of extraction to save Kidra. The Feather withdraws into a distant backup with him still captive, and Kidra's group must retreat as the fortress falls.

Keith turns the occult breakthrough into a secret armament program. He converts hundreds of swords for House Winterscar's unarmored troops and develops scarce rifle-fired occult anti-armor rounds intended to strip relic armor defenses. The house captain trains veterans to use the new blades. While the Chosen knights remain away, Keith briefly leaves Journey to attend a dance under Shadowsong's protection and reconnects with Ellie. Disguised slavers seize the hall and isolate the colony's systems. Shadowsong opens an escape route, while a wounded Ellie separates from Keith to draw pursuit away from him. House Winterscar guards prove that the occult blades allow ordinary soldiers to kill armored attackers. Their captain and successive groups of soldiers repeatedly risk or give their lives to get Keith back to his estate. The slavers capture him just short of the vault, but another sacrificial attack frees him and servants assemble Journey around him. Keith kills several knights, distributes more occult swords, and faces a second capture attempt using heavy nets. Immobilized, he withdraws through his soul fractal and authorizes Journey to load a predictive combat engram and take control of the armor.

Keith escapes the slavers' restraint by producing brief mirror-fractal copies of Journey's arm and blade. Journey's former crusader simulation controls the armor while Keith supplies the unexpected spectral attacks, breaking the assault. Most attackers die, but their leader escapes. Shadowsong returns with surviving Winterscar soldiers, and Keith finds Ellie hidden with four wounds in her leg. Guided by Journey, he removes the bullets and stops her blood loss. The wider attack used disguised troops and hidden armor to strike several colony targets at once. It is defeated with heavy civilian casualties, but Atius's empty armor is found pinned by an occult weapon. Keith concludes that the blade has delayed the Deathless lord's return for months or longer. Shadowsong assumes emergency leadership as the expected raider invasion nears. Underground, Kidra's force is retreating from the fallen fortress and Tenisent remains captive. The Feather realizes that she intentionally spared Kidra despite Relinquished's order. After learning that Relinquished destroyed earlier machines that retained memories and developed independence, she begins to question her ruler even as she prepares to demand Undecider City's surrender.

The coordinated slaver assault is defeated after severe civilian and House Winterscar losses, but its leader escapes. Keith survives capture, regains Journey, manifests brief mirror-fractal weapons, and saves Ellie from fatal bleeding. Atius is apparently dead after an explosion in his quarters leaves his empty armor impaled by an occult blade. Keith concludes that the weapon will postpone Atius's Deathless return for months or longer, leaving Shadowsong to guide the clan as the larger raider attack approaches. Kidra's force is retreating from the fallen Stretch fortress after disabling and pinning the Feather's current shell. Her attempt to extract Tenisent fails when he gives up escape to protect her, and he remains inside the Feather's remote system. The Feather tightens the blockade of Undecider City and plans a surrender demand. She has also recognized that she deliberately spared Kidra and learned that Relinquished destroyed earlier memory-bearing machines after they became independent. The Chosen remain guarded, their knights are away on Atius's test mission, and Keith's seeker, the hidden weapon, To’Aacar's plan, and the digital researcher's purpose are unresolved.
