In short (whole book)

After Atius's apparent death destabilizes the clan, Keith strengthens House Winterscar and survives a Chosen trap led by To’Aacar. Meanwhile To’Wrathh besieges Undecider City, infiltrates it, and secures its surrender, but her contact with Tenisent and human civilians changes her. The Mites free her from Relinquished and grant healing in exchange for service. Keith goes underground to find Kidra, learns Atius staged his death, and is nearly killed when To’Aacar seizes Journey. A mysterious healer called Hecate saves him and is eventually exposed as To’Wrathh. She rebels, joins Keith against To’Aacar, and survives with Tenisent's aid. Keith escapes an interdimensional trap and destroys To’Aacar's soul with true division; Kidra finishes his remaining shell. Tenisent persuades the siblings to spare the disabled To’Wrathh as a possible ally, leaving the occupied city, Relinquished, and the Mites' unfinished purpose open.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Keith Winterscar and his sister Kidra led House Winterscar while Keith developed occult weapons and fractal techniques with the help of Journey, his relic armor. Tenisent existed as a captive soul connected to the Winterscars. Atius stood as a Deathless clan authority and ally, while Shadowsong, Ironreach, and Anka were among the family's important allies. The machine sovereign Relinquished remained an enemy, and the powerful machine To’Aacar pursued Keith for a reason that was still hidden. The Mites represented another machine power with purposes of their own.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

So far this book: Atius's apparent death has fractured the clan council, and the weapon Keith recovered appears able to delay a Deathless return by cutting the soul. The Shadowsong Prime assumes military authority, Dross becomes acting clan lord, and the Chosen civilians are detained while their missing relic knights remain a threat. Keith reveals his occult knowledge to House Winterscar and gives its knights soul fractals, allowing Journey's stored crusader engram to train them in Winter Blossom. Below, To’Wrathh commands Relinquished's campaign against Undecider City while the captive Tenisent challenges her treatment of humans. Kidra rejects To’Wrathh's offer to trade allegiance for her father's release. General Zaang prepares the city to resist behind its pillar. To’Wrathh defeats simultaneous raids on her might forges and conceals the tactics learned by her increasingly adaptable machine troops.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

To’Wrathh launches a timed assault on Undecider City while Zaang uses demolitions, armor, and repeated delaying actions to consume her narrow window. She breaches the gates, but a pulse from the pillar disables her nearby army and leaves her isolated inside. At the clan, the missing Chosen knights demand Keith in exchange for hostages. Shadowsong surrounds the meeting site, only for the supposed negotiation to become a machine ambush. To’Aacar isolates Keith and nearly overwhelms him, but a Nightbreaker destroys much of the Feather's body and forces his withdrawal. Before escaping, To’Aacar identifies To’Wrathh as his sister. Keith survives, while To’Wrathh hides inside the city after discovering that the pillar disrupted her unity fractal without killing her. With little power and no army at hand, she adopts a human disguise and begins looking for a way to sabotage the pillar from within.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Under the name Sophia, To’Wrathh moves among Chosen sympathizers inside Undecider City. Time with civilians and Tenisent's voluntary memories leads her toward ideas of consent and ordinary human life, even as she continues planning conquest. She offers influential citizens surrender in exchange for grafting and loyalty, revealing that Relinquished chiefly wants the surface human who communicated with the Golden Goddess. Keith's force captures the Chosen airspeeder and hostages alive, and a captured priest confirms that To’Aacar serves Relinquished and can return in a replacement body. Dross orders Keith to focus on preparing the clan for raiders. His knights develop Rakurai, a fast counterstyle built on Winter Blossom. Then Kidra fails to return from below. At Undecider City, Zaang concludes the defense cannot hold and covertly arranges the destruction of the pillar while Kidra is kept away by her duel with To’Wrathh. The city leadership moves toward surrender.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

Dross secretly authorizes Keith to stage the theft of an airspeeder and take five Winterscar knights underground to find Kidra. Sagrius accompanies him, and the party begins the long route after finding Kidra's planned camp untouched. Undecider City is now occupied. To’Wrathh preserves its civil administration and delays compulsory grafting for three weeks, while Kidra leads a resistance and Zaang manages logistics under occupation. The machines exposed to To’Wrathh's human memories begin showing less automatic hostility. A damaged To’Aacar arrives, rejects her restraint, and mortally wounds the Chosen leader advising her. To’Wrathh bargains with the Mites to save the human, gaining freedom from Relinquished's unity fractal, a healing power, and an unfinished mission as their apostate. The city's machines then reject To’Aacar's authority and shield her. Keith's expedition prepares for pursuit and inscribes a mobile occult shield technique across its armor before continuing toward the city.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

To’Aacar ambushes Keith's expedition with controlled Chosen knights and demands the truth about Keith's encounter with the Golden Goddess. Keith withholds part of the account, and the confrontation becomes a battle. An unseen ally supplies Atius's sword and a Nightbreaker before revealing himself as Atius, whose death was staged with Dross as part of a counterintelligence plan. To’Aacar responds by taking administrative control of Journey. The armor saves Keith by ejecting its power, but To’Aacar impales him and throws him from a cliff. A winged stranger catches and heals him. She introduces herself as Hecate, claims to be a new Deathless seeking a Mite speaker, and tells Keith that Undecider City has fallen but Kidra survives as the leader of its resistance. Keith travels with Hecate toward a power fountain while Fido, a drake serving To’Aacar, hunts them. Hecate asks that they disable rather than kill it, even as the pair's dwindling armor power makes the pursuit increasingly dangerous.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

Hecate and Keith wound Fido but allow it to escape, then follow supplies and trail marks left by an anomalous hidden helper to a working Mite fountain. Journey repairs itself and warns Keith that Hecate's suit is not relic armor. After Hecate disappears and Fido ambushes him, Keith uses mirror fractals offensively to cripple the drake and lets it live. His mercy convinces Hecate that he is serious about possible human-machine peace. During their proposed duel, soul sight exposes Hecate as a Feather. She admits she serves the Mites rather than Relinquished, although she still conceals why she chose Keith. To’Aacar intercepts them outside Undecider City and reveals that Hecate is To’Wrathh, the former machine hunter holding Tenisent. To’Wrathh refuses his order to kill Keith and openly rebels. She and Keith fight To’Aacar together while a city runner seeks Kidra's aid. To’Aacar then traps Keith midway through a portal, leaving To’Wrathh to face him alone.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

To’Aacar presses his advantage against the badly damaged To’Wrathh. Tenisent refuses her attempt to send his soul away and instead enters her soul fractal, sharing the perception she needs to anticipate the Feather's portals and lethal attacks. She breaks To’Aacar's shields but loses her wings and legs. Keith escapes the portal by reaching across parallel versions of himself, learns how To’Aacar's dimensional movement works, and returns behind him. Using heat and Atius's sword, Keith performs true division and destroys To’Aacar's soul. The remaining body continues under a mechanical combat program until Kidra arrives and destroys it. The sword no longer functions afterward. Kidra prepares to kill the disabled To’Wrathh to recover Tenisent, but Keith stops her. Within To’Wrathh's soul space, Tenisent confirms that he chose to hide his presence and argues that the machine who protected him has become a genuine possibility for peace. Kidra accepts the need to preserve her. To’Aacar is gone, but Tenisent remains inside To’Wrathh, Undecider City remains occupied, and the conflicts with Relinquished and the Mites remain open.

How does it end? (ending)

Keith and To’Wrathh confront To’Aacar outside occupied Undecider City. To’Aacar traps Keith between dimensions, but Tenisent shares his soul perception with To’Wrathh and helps her survive long enough for Keith to return through links with parallel versions of himself. Keith uses Atius's sword and true division to destroy To’Aacar's soul, and Kidra destroys the programmed shell that continues fighting afterward. The sword is left inert. To’Wrathh survives with catastrophic damage. Kidra initially intends to kill her in order to recover Tenisent, but Tenisent reveals that he chose to conceal his continued presence and believes To’Wrathh has become a possible bridge toward peace. Keith and Kidra spare her. Tenisent remains within her, Anka continues Kidra's resistance in the occupied city, and Dross and Shadowsong retain responsibility for the clan. Relinquished remains active, the Mites still hold To’Wrathh to an unfinished apostate mission, and the future of the city machines and their human subjects remains unresolved.
