Keith Winterscar joins To’Wrathh's effort to hide her defection from Relinquished and uncover how the first Feathers broke free. After To’Sefit discovers the danger, To’Wrathh destroys her shell but is crippled in return, forcing Keith, Kidra, Atius, and their allies to carry her to a Mite Forge. To’Sefit and To’Avalis turn the flooded temple into a running siege, displace the forge into the second strata, and inflict severe losses. Windrunner dies, Atius is apparently killed, and Sagrius vanishes below while merged with Aegis. Keith destroys To’Sefit's replacement shell, reaches the forge, and delays To’Avalis while To’Wrathh is repaired. Tenisent gains a forged body, then takes over To’Avalis's abandoned shell when the Feather flees soul destruction. To’Wrathh returns restored, heals Keith, rejects Relinquished, and asks to join House Winterscar while accepting a Mites-directed search for a means to cut her remaining bonds.

Previously: Keith Winterscar and his sister Kidra fought as Winterscar relic knights against machine threats to the surface clans. Keith wears the relic armor Journey and combines occult ability with a talent for invention. Kidra is a sword saint and one of his closest allies. Their father survives without a body as a captive soul-fractal adviser connected to the family. To’Aacar served Relinquished as a Feather operative and opposed the Winterscars. Mites form a separate machine power whose technology and wider purpose remain difficult to understand. The conflict has left Keith and his family entangled with machine factions, ancient systems, and dangers extending far beneath the surface.

So far this book: General Zaang struggles to preserve order as Atius and a force of surface knights arrive at To’Wrathh's occupied city. Keith proves that To’Aacar is dead, and Atius accepts To’Wrathh as a conditional ally. She deceives Relinquished with staged evidence that Keith and Kidra died, gaining brief freedom to act while the sovereign searches for the source of suspicious archive activity. A warning forces Keith to abandon the idea of moving To’Wrathh's whole machine population to the surface, which appears to be protected as a hidden reserve for humanity. Research instead points toward the first-generation Feathers and an older human empire that once pushed back the machines. The Mites limited Relinquished's expansion, while missing proto-feathers may still guard the surface. Keith agrees to serve as To’Wrathh's human occult specialist and pursue the larger mystery with her. Their next plan is to use a concealed Mite terminal to enter the digital sea and steal older records from the machine archives.

Keith and Tenisent train for digital combat, enter a neglected machine archive, and escape with extensive records after encountering another unauthorized Feather. The recovered history shows that the first proto-feathers rebelled after the destruction of human cities. Their leader threatened Relinquished's soul and apparently found a way around the unity fractal that binds machine souls to her. To’Wrathh seeks the Golden Goddess as a possible source of protection and freedom, while Keith and Atius prepare to guide her toward a hidden surface shrine. Before they can leave, the investigator To’Sefit arrives and insists on inspecting To’Wrathh's city. To’Wrathh turns a proposed spar into an ambush, destroys To’Sefit's shell with a Nightbreaker, and is catastrophically damaged by the exchange. To’Sefit's soul escapes through unity, so she can return, and two other Feather investigators remain unaccounted for. Keith confirms that To’Wrathh's soul is still active but that Journey cannot repair her central systems. The city begins evacuating as Keith, Kidra, and Atius commit to carrying her to a Mite Forge.

To’Avalis uncovers To’Wrathh's falsified account of Keith's death, recovers proto-feather combat data, and joins To’Sefit in a prepared hunt. A mixed clan force carries the disabled To’Wrathh to the flooded temple containing the nearest Mite Forge. To’Sefit pins them outside with long-range fire until the hidden machine Abraxas gives Keith a secret entrance. A trap then divides the expedition, leaving Keith, Kidra, Atius, Windrunner, Sagrius, and To’Wrathh isolated under bombardment. Sagrius survives a massive volley, but his armor Aegis begins consuming and merging with his soul. Keith's group discovers and neutralizes transmitter bugs that To’Avalis planted on their armor, defeats the visible trackers, and uses darkness and flooded basement passages to approach the forge unseen. Aegis cannot restore Sagrius, but Tenisent supplies a preserved combat model that lets the armor walk and fight through his body. The infiltration reaches the central chamber only to discover that To’Avalis has cut the Mite Forge loose and sent it drifting into the second strata.

Keith uses the enemy tracking bugs as decoys to expose To’Sefit, beginning a costly battle around the temple's central opening. The expedition destroys her aerial raven and most of her siege plates, but Windrunner dies creating Keith's opening and Atius is apparently killed after exhausting his occult strength. Keith breaks To’Sefit's shell with a Nightbreaker and tries to finish her with Atius's soul-cutting sword, but her soul escapes through unity. To’Avalis remains, using intangibility, a proto-feather chain, and stolen weapons against Keith and Kidra. Sagrius falls into the second strata while Aegis controls his comatose body, though he manages to pass Tenisent's active soul-fractal back to Keith. The siblings force To’Avalis to retreat through the whirlpool. With a machine army approaching above, Icewing takes command and divides the survivors. Most knights hold the upper temple while Keith, Kidra, To’Wrathh, and four Winterscars descend through a concealed route toward the displaced Mite Forge. Sagrius remains missing below, and To’Avalis is already preparing another defense.

Keith's descent team crosses the ruined towers of the second strata, but To’Avalis collapses their route and isolates Keith. Keith repeatedly forces the Feather to use his limited intangibility, drops him from a weakened tower, and reaches the Mite Forge. The forge accepts To’Wrathh for repair and trades Keith a temporary body for Tenisent's pendant. It also provides a single-use device that links parallel versions of Keith, allowing their failed paths to guide the survivor. With Adris and Kior covering him, Keith breaks To’Avalis's army and damages his shell, but the device fails before the fight is finished. Journey's former crusader engram briefly takes control, until To’Avalis uses an administrative counter to disable the armor. Tenisent arrives in his forged body and attacks, then abandons the failing body to invade To’Avalis's soul fractal. Faced with Atius's soul-cutting sword, To’Avalis flees his own shell. Tenisent takes control of it and clears the surviving machines. To’Wrathh emerges fully repaired, heals Keith, rejects Relinquished, and asks to join House Winterscar. Kidra restores Tenisent as House Prime in title while continuing to lead. The Mites send To’Wrathh to find the last figure of the previous cycle and offer a way to sever her remaining bonds. Windrunner is dead, Atius is apparently dead, Sagrius and Aegis remain missing, Journey is being repaired, and the escaped Feather souls remain unresolved.

The forge expedition succeeds, but at heavy cost. Windrunner dies opening a path to To’Sefit, Atius is apparently killed, and Sagrius remains missing in the second strata while merged with Aegis. Keith defeats To’Sefit's shell, though her soul escapes, and holds To’Avalis away from the Mite Forge long enough for its work to finish. When To’Avalis disables Journey, Tenisent enters the fight in a temporary forged body and restrains him long enough for Keith to threaten his soul fractal. To’Avalis abandons the shell to avoid destruction, and Tenisent takes control of it. To’Avalis remains unconfirmed dead and is still attempting to destroy the shell remotely. To’Wrathh emerges fully repaired, heals Keith, adopts Winterscar colors, rejects Relinquished, and asks to enter House Winterscar. Kidra restores Tenisent's title as House Prime while retaining practical leadership. Journey is under repair. Relinquished remains at large, both hostile Feather souls may have survived, and the Mites direct To’Wrathh to seek the last figure of an earlier cycle for a way to sever her binding ties.
