An Imperial Auditor recently returned from a classified inquiry on Komarr. His military career ended after injuries left him with a seizure disorder. He hopes to court the recently widowed Ekaterin, but initially offers her professional work designing a native garden.

Tien Vorsoisson (Minor)

Appears from the start

Ekaterin's late husband and Nikki's father. The public account treats his death during the Komarr inquiry as an accident, while the details remain protected.

Count Vorkosigan (Supporting)

Miles and Mark's father, and the senior holder of the Vorkosigan title.

Cordelia (Supporting)

A Vorrutyer family member whose formal challenge has delayed Richars's confirmation as count. She has gone to Beta Colony to obtain evidence for her case.

Lord Dono Vorrutyer (Supporting)

Formerly known as Lady Donna Vorrutyer, Dono returns from Beta Colony medically male and claims the Vorrutyer countship as Count Pierre's brother. He has the household armsmen's loyalty and seeks a public Council decision against Richars.

The young Count Vorbretten (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

The incumbent in a disputed countship succession. His claim rests on an earlier confirmation in his family line, while a challenger alleges that confirmation was invalid. Miles pledges him the Vorkosigan district vote as his Council support and social circle weaken.

Byerly Vorrutyer (Supporting)

Dono's cousin and political contact. He knew of Dono's plan before the public claim and supports the effort to win the Vorrutyer countship.

The incumbent in the Vorbretten succession dispute and Dono's ally in Miles's linked Council strategy. He needs a majority of thirty-one votes to retain his countship.

Vasily Vorsoisson (Supporting)

Tien's cousin, who previously participated in transferring Nikki's guardianship to Ekaterin. Claiming a family duty to protect Nikki, he threatens to challenge her custody because of the allegations surrounding Miles.

Hugo Vorvain (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

Ekaterin's brother. He initially accepts the rejected suitor's accusations as sincere and joins Vasily in pressing Ekaterin to avoid Miles.

Admiral Naismith (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 17

The covert identity Miles invented and later embodied while commanding a mercenary fleet for ImpSec. Miles discloses to Ekaterin that Admiral Naismith was his own operational persona.
