Traumatized by what she did Under the Mountain and stifled by Tamlin's smothering protectiveness, Feyre is nearly wed at the Spring Court when Rhysand spirits her away to honor the bargain that owes him a week of every month. At the Night Court she discovers the hidden city of Velaris and learns that Rhysand's cruelty was a mask worn to protect his people. Among his inner circle - Mor, Cassian, Azriel, and Amren - Feyre heals, trains, and comes into powers she gained from all the High Lords who resurrected her. She learns that Rhysand is her mate, and she chooses him. Meanwhile the King of Hybern threatens to shatter the wall and enslave both realms using the Cauldron, and Feyre's group hunts for a magical book that can counter it. Hybern captures them, and Feyre's sisters Nesta and Elain are thrown into the Cauldron and made High Fae against their will. To escape and to spy against the enemy from within, Feyre lets Tamlin, who has allied with Hybern to win her back, take her home to the Spring Court, concealing that she is Rhysand's mate and the newly named High Lady of the Night Court.

Previously: mortal huntress Feyre Archeron killed a disguised faerie and was taken across the wall into Prythian by Tamlin, the beast-shifting High Lord of the Spring Court. She fell in love with him, but a curse and a spreading blight led to his capture by the tyrant Amarantha, who ruled Under the Mountain and held the High Lords in thrall. Feyre followed to save him and was forced through three deadly trials, during which the cruel, beautiful Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court, aided her in exchange for a bargain: one week of every month owed to him. In the final trial Feyre was made to kill innocents, and Amarantha killed her when the riddle went unsolved. The seven High Lords resurrected Feyre as an immortal High Fae, Tamlin destroyed Amarantha, and the courts were freed. Feyre returned to the Spring Court reborn, betrothed to Tamlin, but scarred by grief and still bound by her debt to Rhysand.

Months later, Feyre is engaged to Tamlin but haunted by nightmares and the killings she was forced to commit. Tamlin, terrified of losing her again, becomes controlling and overprotective, confining her to the estate and leaving her powerless and increasingly numb. On her wedding day Feyre panics at the altar, and Rhysand appears to collect on their bargain, whisking her away to the Night Court. There the debt that once felt like a curse begins to look different, and Feyre glimpses a side of Rhysand and his realm she never expected.

In the Night Court, Feyre discovers Velaris, a beautiful hidden city Rhysand has protected in secret for centuries, and meets his close-knit inner circle: Mor, Cassian, Azriel, and Amren. She learns that his masked cruelty Under the Mountain was a sacrifice to shield his people, and she begins to heal, to read, and to train. Rhysand reveals that Feyre carries powers drawn from all the High Lords who resurrected her. As the threat of the King of Hybern and his Cauldron grows clear, Feyre chooses to leave Tamlin's smothering court for good and to stand with the Night Court against the coming war.

Feyre and Rhysand grow close, and she comes to understand that they are mates, bound by a rare and powerful bond; she accepts it and him. To counter the Cauldron, the group seeks the two halves of an ancient book of power, negotiating with treacherous mortal queens and other courts to gather what they need. Feyre masters more of her abilities, the inner circle becomes her found family, and the alliance against Hybern takes shape - even as the enemy's reach proves longer and more dangerous than they feared.

Their efforts to neutralize the Cauldron collapse when the King of Hybern captures Feyre's group. Before her eyes, her mortal sisters Nesta and Elain are thrown into the Cauldron and remade as High Fae against their will. Tamlin appears, having allied with Hybern in a desperate attempt to reclaim Feyre. Rather than fight and lose, Feyre makes a devastating choice: she pretends to still love and obey Tamlin and lets him take her back to the Spring Court. She is in truth now Rhysand's mate and the High Lady of the Night Court, and she goes as a spy, hiding her true allegiance and her bond, intent on destroying the alliance with Hybern from inside Tamlin's own court as open war looms.

She leaves the Night Court and everyone she has come to love behind, hiding her true allegiance and her bond with Rhysand, and returns to the Spring Court cold and resolved, determined to destroy the alliance from within as war with Hybern draws near.
