A Curse for True Love recap

In the first book, Evangeline Fox was an orphaned shop girl in Valenda who could not stop the man she loved, Luc Navarro, from marrying her stepsister Marisol. She prayed at the temple statue of Jacks, the Prince of Hearts - one of the immortal Fates - and he offered a bargain: he would stop the wedding in exchange for three kisses, given to people of his choosing whenever he asked. He stopped it by turning Luc and Marisol to stone at the altar. Blamed by the city and with nowhere to go, Evangeline left with Jacks for the Magnificent North, where curses, vampires and a sealed arch called the Valory are ordinary facts. Jacks called in the first kiss and made her give it to Prince Apollo, the North's young ruler, who was left fixed on her past all reason. By the end she understood that the kisses had never been about the wedding: Jacks wanted her in the North, beside the arch, and Apollo paid for the kiss she gave him. In the second book Evangeline made a new bargain with Jacks - help with the Valory Arch in exchange for undoing what her kiss had done to Apollo, who had by then become genuinely dangerous. Opening the arch meant collecting particular things out of the North's stories, so she traveled among cursed houses, vampires and old families, finding each legend truer and worse than the version she was raised on, and learning that her own mother's connection to the North had never been innocent. The arch was opened, the people around her proved to have been playing far older games than the one she thought she had joined, and then Evangeline's memories were taken from her and replaced with a manufactured life: one in which Apollo is her husband and the man she loves, and Jacks is the villain who tried to destroy her. That is the story she believes when this book begins, and she has no reason at all to doubt it.
