When Nick and Jenks's son Jax disappear after stealing a potent Were artifact, Rachel and Jenks travel to northern Michigan to rescue them. Ceri uses demon-derived magic to make Jenks human-sized, letting him operate openly beyond pixy territory. Rachel also joins David Hue's small pack, gaining standing in Were society. They find Nick and Jax caught among rival Were factions seeking the Focus, an artifact capable of uniting packs under one leader. Ivy follows the rescue and helps them survive the escalating conflict, while Trent's agents pursue his claim to the stolen object. Rachel and her allies escape with both captives alive and the immediate pursuers defeated. The rescue also exposes Nick's betrayal: he participated willingly in the theft and withheld the truth so Rachel would help him. Rachel ends their relationship. Jenks returns to normal size, Rachel's pack bond with David continues, and she carries the Focus back to Cincinnati rather than resolving the larger struggle over it. The object leaves her vulnerable to every faction that wants to control the Weres.

Previously: Rachel Morgan founded Vampiric Charms with living vampire Ivy Tamwood and pixy Jenks after leaving Inderland Security. She exposed Trent Kalamack as secretly elven, then cleared him of a later series of witch murders by proving undead vampire master Piscary was the killer. Piscary was imprisoned, destabilizing Cincinnati's vampires. Rachel freed the ancient elf Ceri from demon Algaliarept but accumulated demon marks and obligations of her own. Nick Sparagmos, Rachel's human boyfriend and accidental familiar, left Cincinnati; Rachel began a relationship with living vampire Kisten. Trent later hired Rachel during a conflict with demon practitioner Lee Saladan. Rachel caused Al to take Lee as his familiar and learned that her father worked with Trent's father, that she and Trent knew one another as children, and that their families' genetic work was connected to curing her fatal Rosewood syndrome. Rachel starts this book separated from Nick, still tied to Al, and on strained terms with Jenks.

Rachel learns that Nick and Jax, Jenks's son, are missing in northern Michigan after becoming involved in the theft of a valuable object. Whatever Rachel's anger at Nick, she believes both captives will be killed without help. The crisis gives her and Jenks a reason to set aside the resentment caused by her secrecy. Because a pixy cannot simply travel and operate through human spaces like a full-sized partner, Ceri adapts dangerous transformation magic to make Jenks human-sized for the mission. The change gives him reach and physical power but carries unknown costs, and Matalina makes clear that returning him safely matters as much as finding Jax. Rachel and Jenks leave Cincinnati to follow the pair's trail.

On the road north, Rachel and human-sized Jenks adjust to working together without his usual ability to vanish into gardens and airspace. Jenks's combat skills and senses remain valuable, but his altered body makes him visible and changes the balance between them. Their search establishes that Nick and Jax were pursuing an artifact known as the Focus and that several Were groups now want it. David Hue helps Rachel understand the pack rules surrounding the conflict. Rachel formally joins a pack with him, giving David the standing he needs and giving Rachel a recognized position among Weres, though the bond entails obligations neither can treat as a convenient disguise.

Rachel and Jenks reach the Mackinaw area and begin locating the factions holding Nick and Jax. The Focus is more than stolen property: it can concentrate Were allegiance and potentially place many packs under one leader. That power explains why negotiation repeatedly gives way to capture and violence. Trent Kalamack also has a claim connected to the object and sends Quen north, adding an elven recovery effort whose goals only partly overlap with Rachel's rescue. Rachel avoids giving either the Weres or Trent's people full knowledge of her plans. The evidence still presents Nick and Jax primarily as prisoners caught after a reckless theft, so Rachel concentrates on reaching them before deciding who should possess the artifact.

The rescue becomes a moving contest among rival Were factions, Rachel's group, and Trent's agents. Rachel uses her new pack status with David and magic Ceri helped prepare, while Jenks takes advantage of the strength and reach of his temporary body. Ivy follows from Cincinnati and joins the struggle, unwilling to leave Rachel inside a conflict that now includes captivity, pack dominance, and supernatural coercion. Her arrival gives Rachel a powerful ally but also brings their unresolved issues of blood and trust into close quarters. Rachel reaches Nick and Jax, yet gaps in Nick's account suggest that the theft and his role in it are not as simple as the plea for rescue implied.

Rachel's group tries to move Nick, Jax, and the Focus out of the Mackinaw conflict while the Were factions close in. Control of the artifact could reshape pack society, so surrendering it to the nearest claimant would not create a neutral outcome. Quen's priority is recovering Trent's property and preserving elven interests; Rachel's is keeping her people alive and preventing one faction from using the Focus immediately. Nick's decisions before his capture become increasingly suspect, straining any hope that rescue will restore their former relationship. Jenks must also protect Jax while confronting the possibility that his son chose the risk rather than merely following Nick. None of those conflicts can be settled until the group survives the final pursuit.

Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, and their allies defeat or escape the immediate Were leaders pursuing them and get Nick and Jax out alive. Rachel retains the Focus and carries it back to Cincinnati instead of giving the artifact to a faction that could use it to dominate the packs; its continued existence means the larger political struggle is postponed rather than ended. Nick is exposed as a willing participant in the theft who concealed the truth and counted on Rachel's loyalty to rescue him. Rachel ends their romantic and working relationship. Jenks is restored to pixy size after the human-sized curse, while Jax's independence and deception leave a family breach that rescue alone cannot repair. Rachel's pack bond with David remains valid. Ivy returns with Rachel, their loyalty proven again even though the blood and intimacy at the center of their relationship remain unresolved. Trent loses the immediate recovery contest but retains his knowledge of Rachel and their shared past.

Rachel's pack bond with David remains in force. Ivy and Rachel survive the rescue with their partnership intact but their intimate and vampiric boundaries still unresolved. Trent does not recover the Focus, and the history Rachel shares with him yields no new trust.
