The eleventh book of A Thousand Li follows Long Wu Ying, now an elder of Verdant Green Waters known as the Verdant Gatherer, as he recovers from a dangerous body-reconstruction ritual and works to master his newly acquired immortal wind body. While training in a hidden mystic realm and searching for successors to lead his department after he eventually ascends, he is asked to join an armed diplomatic mission meant to deter the kingdom of Tsui from launching a drought-driven invasion. Accepting the mission despite the danger it poses to those he cares about, Wu Ying departs with his companions and allies aboard a concealed flying vessel toward negotiations intended to avert a wider war.
