The twelfth book of A Thousand Li opens with Long Wu Ying critically unstable after a failed attempt to merge his immortal soul and body, kept alive only through emergency treatment from allies and the family of his companion Yang Mu. Warned that the stabilization is temporary and that he has at most a decade to find a cultivation path that can complete his ascension, Wu Ying resigns his sect position and sets out with Yang Mu and his old friend Tou He toward a distant temple that may offer guidance. Along the journey, the group faces old grudges and dangerous encounters, while Wu Ying searches for an understanding of his Tao that neither surrenders to fate nor demands further self-sacrifice.
