Tou He reaches Nascent Soul, while Wu Ying learns to remove the incompatible remnants of a wind-centered identity without discarding the mortal experiences that shaped him. Yang Mu uncovers the widening danger around her family's stolen dual-cultivation manual and repeatedly protects their journey. At a mountain realm that consumes chi and false self-conceptions, Wu Ying realizes his Tao lies in perpetual growth through travel, learning, relationships, and contribution. An elderly physician attempting the same trial dies. Yang Mu holds the entrance against demonic attackers while Wu Ying completes his merger, survives heavenly lightning, and becomes immortal. He leaves the realm's chained hunger-beast alive, entrusts his possessions to Yang Mu, and ascends to answer the Jade Emperor, leaving their reunion and several mortal conflicts unresolved.

Previously: Wu Ying rose from a farmer's life into cultivation with Verdant Green Waters, becoming a swordsman, gatherer, teacher, and widely traveled defender. His command of wind and his experiences beyond his homeland brought increasing power, but his resistance to heaven and his reluctance to surrender his identity complicated his approach to immortality. Yang Mu became his lover and closest traveling companion, while Tou He remained a trusted friend shaped by Buddhist practice and a fire-dragon bloodline. Wu Ying also carried a world-spirit ring whose loss cost him both a treasured realm and the future he had imagined for it. His attempt to merge immortal soul and body failed.

Wu Ying survives the immediate crisis only because Yang Mu's parents, Fa Yuan, and Tou He separate the damaged bonds between his immortal soul and body and place balanced chi between them. The intervention leaves him frail and permanently reduces what he can recover through his former path. He has no more than a decade to find a Tao that permits a true merger, and exertion could shorten that time. Accepting that Verdant Green Waters cannot supply the answer, he gives up his leadership role and prepares to travel. Yang Mu refuses to abandon him despite the danger to her family, while Tou He proposes seeking counsel at the Five Harmonies Temple. During his recovery, Wu Ying shifts to unaspected chi, relearns basic movement, and accepts that speed and wind-dispersal are no longer safe. The three leave the inn together, aware that hostile observers are already following them.

The travelers evade an inherited attack against Yang Mu through Tou He's nonlethal tea trap, then continue by river toward the Five Harmonies Temple. There, an enlightened monk helps Tou He reconcile mercy with his dragon blood and heavenly fire. Tou He breaks his core and undergoes a lightning tribulation while the abbot shields Wu Ying from the spiritual pressure. Tou He survives the ascent and reaches Nascent Soul. Wu Ying's search for a viable Tao remains unresolved.

The group turns west toward the great library at Yangwen Duan, hoping foreign records contain an answer. Demonic cultivators ambush them soon after departure. Tou He draws off and kills the strongest attacker only after an offered surrender becomes a trick, while Yang Mu and Wu Ying handle the remaining force. On the river, a wandering heretical cultivator shows Wu Ying a discipline that treats body and soul as one rather than refining them through ordinary meridians. His example is useful, but memories of the lost world-spirit ring drive Wu Ying into days of grief and physical collapse. Yang Mu nurses him and reminds him that his life includes love and companionship as well as advancement. Flood conditions force the party overland. In a town oppressed by three local sects, Tou He subdues their leaders and decides to make them answer for abusing the mortals they should protect.

Reports of arson and theft against Yang Mu's family network reveal that an organized enemy is closing in. Wu Ying meanwhile recognizes that trying to embody every wind contradicts his nature, and removing part of that old understanding slightly eases the conflict within him. The travelers adopt aliases and muted auras as they cross drought-stricken lands. An immortal briefly isolates them to warn Tou He that greater cultivation brings a new hierarchy and heavier obligations, but gives Wu Ying only the instruction to keep searching. Paid attackers later exploit precise knowledge of Wu Ying's injuries. At Yangwen Duan, Overseer Norbu offers access to rare ascension records if Yang Mu and Tou He address a neglected mystic realm beneath the library. The party detects hidden Nascent Soul cultivators and subtle interference with Wu Ying's perceptions, making clear that the institution is concealing important parts of the bargain.

Yang Mu and Tou He enter the library's realm and discover an organized snake-bodied civilization rather than a simple infestation. Tou He seeks negotiations but is trapped in a mental assault, while Yang Mu builds a formation to sever the realm's concealed connection to the outside world. In the library, Wu Ying studies three possible treatments and favors the Carving of Eternity, a method of removing incompatible portions before rebuilding. He begins cutting away a corrupted Tao understanding despite reopening his wounds. Yang Mu's formation collapses the portal, and Wu Ying extracts his companions along with three surviving realm inhabitants. The library elders detain and attack them, then admit that the inhabitants were allies and that the visiting cultivators sent through the portal were not expected to return. Yang Mu demonstrates that a prolonged battle could destroy the library, and Tou He exposes its willingness to sacrifice outsiders. The eldest elder permits their departure. The trio escapes and spreads word of the institution's conduct.

Tou He returns to his responsibilities at Verdant Green Waters, leaving Wu Ying and Yang Mu to seek a remote mountain realm associated with soul destruction. Their enemies continue to track them, including an assassin clan that sends unusually young killers. Wu Ying and Yang Mu spare those who wish to leave that life. While traveling with a caravan, a concealed Nascent Soul opera leader stages a performance that revives Wu Ying's memories of wartime loss. Soon afterward, Yang Mu learns that her sister, brother-in-law, and their household have been murdered. She explains that her mother once fled a heretical sect with a dual-cultivation manual capable of supporting paired advancement but also of consuming one partner when abused. Control of that manual has made her parents and their descendants enduring targets. New maps finally lead the pair near the mountain realm. Wu Ying refuses a separate call to investigate the dangerous realm formed from his lost world-spirit ring, choosing to pursue a future beyond it.

An elderly physician with his own incomplete soul-body merger offers secret access to the mountain realm in exchange for joining the attempt. Wu Ying accepts, and Yang Mu remains outside to defend the entrance while the two men climb. The mountain consumes exposed chi and forces Wu Ying to confront the burden of his choices. He removes misaligned beliefs from the self he hopes to carry into immortality but refuses to erase responsibility for the harm and loss in his past. Rebellion and heroism both prove too narrow to define him, and his Tao remains unresolved as he continues upward in severe physical decline. Outside, rival families gather around Yang Mu's formations. Four demonic attackers break through the surrounding force. Yang Mu traps a swift feline Nascent Soul demon with improvised water arrays, then turns to confront another invader while still badly outnumbered.

Near death on the mountain, Wu Ying recognizes that his mortal failures, relationships, work, and accumulated skills are not impurities to discard. Farming, medicine, sword practice, wind, and every journey belong to the person seeking immortality. Watching the elderly physician attempt fusion helps him refine his own method, and he approaches a Tao of crossing boundaries and continuing to learn rather than reducing himself to a single element or grand purpose. At the portal, Yang Mu survives the boar demon's halberd through evasive fan techniques and costly formations. The local families join the struggle because the demonic force threatens them as well. Yang Mu buries and weakens the boar demon with stored earth energy, while the families kill the feline demon she trapped. By the close of the numbered story, Yang Mu is badly injured but still mobile, the remaining demonic force is diminished, and the portal remains open as she continues fighting to preserve Wu Ying's route back.

At the mountain summit, Wu Ying accepts travel, learning, relationships, ordinary labor, and service as parts of one continually growing path. The elderly physician fails to complete the same transformation and dies, but Wu Ying unites his immortal soul and body, then survives three heavenly lightning strikes. He leaves the chained hunger-beast alive so the realm can continue testing future cultivators, although its restraints may fail in roughly fifty years. Outside, the badly injured Yang Mu preserves the portal through the demonic assault. Wu Ying returns with the physician's body, transfers his possessions to Yang Mu, and rises toward denser immortal chi and the Jade Emperor's summons. An elder dragon subsequently addresses him as kin and directs him onward. Yang Mu remains in the mortal realm, and reunion depends on her own eventual ascent. Tou He has returned to his duties at Verdant Green Waters. The war around Yang Mu's family manual, the unidentified sponsors of the attacks, the library's surviving principals, and the mountain realm's long-term danger remain unresolved.
