Previously: Wu Ying is a disciple of Verdant Green Waters, trained in swordsmanship and herb gathering under Elder Cheng. His advancement through Energy Storage is constrained by debts and obligations to his family and village. Tou He, his former-monk friend, has joined the inner sect but still seeks a safe answer to his damaged dantian. Elder Cheng returns from a dangerous mission suffering from Three Seasons poison, which will kill him within months. Fa Yuan, Cheng's other disciple, believes the poisoning is connected to a dark sect encouraging conflict between Shen and Wei. The cure requires a sun lotus blossom, a powerful Chan Chu heart, and a Ben spirit stone. Liu Tsong cannot reliably make the saint-class medicine in the field, so Wu Ying and Fa Yuan begin planning an expedition, researching locations, preservation, and recruitment while Cheng's condition worsens.

They kill both creatures and collect valuable materials, but the frog is not the Chan Chu needed for Elder Cheng's antidote. After recovering from the marsh, the expedition reaches the auction city. Wu Ying deepens his understanding of cutting and sword intent, while the former wandering cultivator advances and the musician receives an enlightenment. Wu Ying reunites with a former friend serving in the city guard, then challenges a visiting cultivator who assaulted a hostess and defeats him publicly. The resulting spectacle grows into a succession contest between sect and wandering cultivators. Tou He wins six consecutive bouts before his small dantian leaves him depleted. Wu Ying then fights through a series of opponents while injured and exhausted. In his sixth bout, a trident user continues attacking after Wu Ying is effectively beaten.
