A young woman working as a junior electrochemical technician aboard a United Nations supply ship under a false name and a forged history, doing unglamorous manual work she was not raised for. She has spent everything she has left on a meticulous plan to destroy James Holden's reputation before she destroys him, holding him responsible for the ruin of her family.

Chief of security aboard the Behemoth, an Earth-born veteran who has served the Outer Planets Alliance for years and is trusted personally by Fred Johnson. Practical, blunt and disinclined to explain himself, he is resented by the ship's Belter officers for holding a senior post while being from Earth, and he knows it.

Captain of the Behemoth, a Belter of long standing with a quiet voice, a habit of singing to himself, and a career's worth of grievances about how the inner planets treat his people. He is more concerned with the Belt's standing among the assembled fleets than with the readiness of the ship he commands.

A Methodist pastor from a small settlement on Europa, invited as one of the civilian and religious observers accompanying the expedition to the ring. Warm, curious and stubbornly interested in the people around her, she leaves her family behind to go, and she is far better at reading a room than the diplomats she travels with.

An electrochemical technician aboard a United Nations ship, an experienced hand with a family waiting at home, who takes a new junior worker under his wing and patiently teaches her the job.

An apparition of the dead Ceres detective Josephus Miller, seen and heard only by Holden. It appears without warning, speaks in fragments and repetitions, and is plainly not a hallucination, whatever it is: it wants Holden to go out to the ring and does not explain why.
