In short (whole book)
Elaine develops her celestial healing and fire magic while traveling with Squad 4, survives an abduction, and advances from Firebug to Pyromancer. The Rangers enter quarantined Perinthus, where she proves that two plagues are present: cholera from contaminated water and a magical bleeding disease deliberately spread by a concealed plague classer. The killer murders Origen before the squad identifies and kills him, after which a town-wide treatment operation clears the crisis. Elaine later helps people harmed by an abusive slave operation, completes a combat test, and returns to Ranger Headquarters. Her parents accept her Earth reincarnation and independence, her arranged marriage ends, and the temple clears her retained knowledge for distribution. Squad 4 then separates: Artemis retires, Arthur becomes the Toxic Sentinel, and the other survivors receive new assignments while Elaine prepares for Ranger Academy. A closing interlude follows Iona, who causes her friend's death in a mine collapse and enters a Valkyrie's service under a binding protection vow.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Elaine left Aquileia rather than accept an arranged marriage, seeking Artemis and the chance to make an independent life. She found Artemis and joined her Ranger squad as its young healer. Elaine now travels under Julius's command, with Artemis as her mentor. Her work as a healer is governed by the oath Elaine to Lyra. She begins this volume as a new Ranger whose place in the team rests on powerful healing, continued training, and the dangers of the squad's journey.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Elaine reveals that her healing classes have merged into Constellation of the Healer and that she has chosen Firebug for her open class slot. Artemis and Maximus test her celestial abilities, especially Veil of the Aurora, and train her to decide quickly between avoiding, shielding, and healing damage. In Virinum, Elaine names the squad's wagon Argo and partners with Kallisto to hear public complaints. They arrange a merchant-sponsored day of free healing, where Elaine treats scars, lost digits, impaired sight, severe illness, and other conditions while learning the limits of her mana and medical judgment. The work greatly advances her healing class and improves Firebug. That evening, Kallisto leaves for a private meeting with Elaine's permission. Elaine breaks the squad's pair rule by walking back alone. Vigilant warns her of an attack just as she raises her aurora shield.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Three mercenaries pursue Elaine through Virinum, overcome her fire and shield tactics, break her limbs, suppress her mana, and carry her toward Aquileia. Arthur tracks the abductors and signals the squad. Julius, Artemis, and Maximus intercept the wagon, Artemis kills one captor, and Elaine is freed. Interrogation establishes that the group was hired to return a runaway girl and used a stolen hair sample to find her. Elaine's parents had refused to cooperate. Artemis kills another captive before Julius can stop her, while Elaine heals the surviving mage because her oath still binds her. Elaine intends to confront the person behind the abduction herself. Back in Virinum, Kallisto accepts punishment and apologizes for leaving Elaine alone. She forgives him but assigns him her cleanup work until Ranger Headquarters. Elaine replaces her vulnerable jewelry with reinforced arcanite earrings, compensates the shop damaged during her escape, and prepares to leave with the team for Perinthus.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
On the road, Elaine practices spear defense, hunting, fire resistance, and rapid shielding. Julius offers a group of former slaves lawful caravan work instead of treating them as bandits, and Elaine agrees to remove their danger brands. An Ornithacarys attack badly injures Origen and drives away the Argo's horses, forcing the squad to push the wagon onward. Arthur teaches Elaine to hunt, but the suffering caused by her fire makes her question its use as a weapon. Elaine also learns that Julius recruited her early because a healer of her potential could reduce Ranger deaths, although she must still pass the ordinary admission process. After delays in Salona and a dangerous journey toward Perinthus, Firebug reaches its advancement threshold. With guidance from the Librarian, Elaine rejects options that would compromise her independence or overlap with healing. She chooses Pyromancer for its long-term offensive potential. She returns from the class choice to heal Arthur after Artemis accidentally strikes him during another predator attack.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
Squad 4 voluntarily enters quarantined Perinthus for a six-week investigation. Elaine's deliberate refusal to answer an injured person's need triggers an oath violation, costing levels and causing severe pain. The incident proves that conscious non-assistance carries a serious penalty even when practical limits remain permissible. At the Grand Temple, local healers disagree over whether the city faces one disease or two. Caecilius argues for separate bleeding and vomiting illnesses, while Marcus maintains cleansing barriers and supervises apprentices. One apprentice sincerely adopts Elaine's oath, turning it into a transferable skill. Evidence from an earlier mass cleansing suggests that the bleeding plague persists beyond the city, and Elaine begins considering transmission routes. She establishes a free clinic with Artemis and Origen, records patient locations, and works with Marcus's water-aligned apprentice to manage dehydration. By the end of this period, the clinic has a steady workflow and Elaine's cures have been independently confirmed, but her own team appears infected and she is exhausting herself faster than the investigation can resolve the crisis.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
The Rangers confirm that Perinthus has two distinct plagues. Elaine wrestles with triage and adopts a system that generally brings the sickest and youngest patients to her first. Mapping reveals that vomiting cases cluster downstream and near the river. She identifies the illness as cholera, explains its connection to contaminated water and waste, and helps redirect the response toward boiling safe water, preserving clean supplies, and tracing wells and pipes. The healers' council accepts the model after the local head healer identifies a failed outhouse near the likely contamination point. Repairs confirm that waste had entered the river, and a public campaign begins. Elaine turns fifteen amid the continuing clinic work. The separate bleeding plague worsens despite repeated healing, recurs after treatment, and appears to spread through eye contact, leaving the Rangers to consider whether it is magical. Artemis also discovers that Elaine has become dangerously undernourished from constant casting and forces her to stop long enough to eat.
Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)
Origen and a teenage patient die within minutes of being healed. The Rangers conclude that the bleeding plague is a deliberate class attack and seal the temple to identify its source. Several healers demonstrate abilities or histories that clear them. The local head healer inadvertently exposes her revolutionary work, but the Rangers defer that matter. Suspicion settles on the former-slave decay mage when his demonstrated secondary class fails to explain his claims. Julius orders an immediate assault, and system notifications after the mage's death confirm a concealed level-260 miasma pestilence class. He created the magical plague and murdered Origen. Elaine stabilizes guards hurt in the attack, and the Rangers hold Origen's death rite. His will sends his equipment and inscription materials to support Laconia. After his cremation, the healers and Rangers evacuate Perinthus through successive healing fog, cleansing flame, and triage lines. Elaine works for nine days with Kallisto guarding her. Once every resident, guard, and healer has been processed, the plague clearance is complete and Elaine collapses into sleep aboard the Argo.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
A retrospective account shows Elaine's parents learning that she left Aquileia rather than marry the selected man, then receiving confirmation that she is safe with Artemis's Rangers. At Masalix, Arthur kills a level-957 sea monster alone after the squad judges it beyond them. Months later in Brigantium, Origen's absence is evident in the Argo's failing inscriptions. Artemis follows a lead into an abusive slave operation and kills its feared operator, suffering injuries that Elaine heals. The Rangers pay the resulting fine and confine Artemis, while Elaine and Kallisto treat survivors and obscure records that might preserve their enslavement. Elaine also uses fire manipulation to help suppress a dangerous building fire. During later training, specialist healers demonstrate that narrow abilities can outperform Elaine's broad healing in their own field. Elaine turns sixteen, learns Artemis plans to retire and open a magic school, and passes a solo goblin test despite serious tactical errors. After Julius helps her correct an unsafe imbalance between speed and vitality, Squad 4 returns alive to Ranger Headquarters.
Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)
Julius reports the completed round to Ranger Command, including Origen's murder, Elaine's role in ending the Perinthus plagues, and Arthur's exceptional solo victory. Command accepts Elaine's potential but still requires Ranger Academy and orders an official review of her Papillon-touched origin. Elaine authenticates her medical manuscript and pays to distribute copies to major healers. Artemis then reunites her with Elainus and Julia. Elaine's parents confirm that her arranged marriage has been cancelled, accept her account of reincarnation from Earth, and support her independent future. They have also adopted the boy Elaine once rescued. Elainus opens a temple account for Elaine, and she restores his damaged eye. At the temple, Elaine shares medical and other non-weapon knowledge but refuses to discuss military technology. The reviewing priest judges her useful or harmless, copies her manuscript, and stores her originals. At the Ranger Convocation, Squad 4 is dissolved. Julius, Kallisto, and Maximus receive separate teams, Artemis retires to found a magic school, and Arthur becomes the Toxic Sentinel. Elaine remains headed for Ranger Academy.
Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)
The closing interlude follows eight-year-old Iona as she unlocks a water-associated child class and chooses abilities intended to protect her closest friend from bullies. While the children hurry through an abandoned mine, Iona repeatedly strikes a support beam and causes a rockslide that kills her friend. A visiting Valkyrie confirms the death. Although neither family blames Iona, grief and responsibility shape her next decision. She persuades the Valkyrie to accept her as an apprentice and leaves home without first obtaining parental permission. After training, Iona advances into the Page, Light class, selecting a path that combines fighting, axes, healing support, and monster husbandry. She accepts a binding vow to defend vulnerable people, oppose those who prey upon them, and remember the friend she lost. The vow strengthens her while she protects another person and threatens severe consequences if she breaks it. Iona's apprenticeship and protective commitment form the book's final handoff.
How does it end? (ending)
Elaine finishes the Ranger round alive after helping end both Perinthus plagues, though Origen's murder remains a personal and practical loss. Her parents accept her reincarnation, the arranged marriage is cancelled, and a temple account gives her financial security. The temple judges her retained Earth knowledge harmless or useful, stores her original medical scrolls, and begins wider distribution. The review implies coercive or lethal consequences for god-touched people judged dangerous. Elaine is bound for two years at Ranger Academy, and Julius's leadership standing depends on her success. Squad 4 dissolves: Julius takes Team Six, Kallisto Team Eight, and Maximus Team Eleven. Arthur becomes the Toxic Sentinel, while Artemis retires to establish a school for mages. The final interlude shifts to Iona, whose accidental killing of her friend leads her into a Valkyrie's apprenticeship. She becomes a Page, Light and accepts a binding vow to protect vulnerable people and oppose those who prey on them.
