In short (whole book)
Jebediah Trapper accepts a contract to remove the nuclear threat at Nellis, only to find that an engineered dungeon attack has covered the theft of two warheads for the ancient wizard Zen, later identified as Vex. Jeb survives Myers' command, a reality storm, and a stronger systemless foe, then helps recover Casey Thompson and prepares for an Imperial assault on Vex. When Myers unleashes another weaponized dungeon against the city, Jeb abandons the raid to save the orphanage. Myers kills Colt and takes Nancy hostage, but Jeb defeats her. Driven into Vex's complex, Jeb becomes entangled in a nuclear experiment in the fifth dimension. Casey frees the surviving captives, although Vex kills those whose ransoms were unpaid. Jeb escapes with his system restored, missing memories, and reason to fear that the vanished weapon is inside him. Nancy survives, the Emperor restrains Vex through a concealed settlement, and Jeb receives a new quest to kill Mab, Queen of the Fae. The courier later resumes independent contract killing.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jebediah Trapper entered this volume as a blacklisted level-39 Mystic Trapsmith with an established fairy companion, Smartass, and responsibility for an orphanage. The former sheriff now administers the home and remains one of Jeb's field allies. Colt and Nancy are among the armed young people under their protection, while Eddie and Ron contribute engineering and necromancy. Jeb also has an existing connection to a former Imperial Enforcer. His position combines considerable magical skill with damaged system access, dangerous accolades, and obligations to a vulnerable community. Casey Thompson, an S-ranked Enforcer able to give life to objects, is bound to Imperial service through the Emperor's protection of her child. These relationships and debts form the starting point for the new threats surrounding the orphanage, the Imperial authorities, and the remnants of human military power.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
So far: Jeb and the former sheriff supervise Colt's young core hunters, allowing the team to learn after thieves force Colt to trade away their first core for Toby. The local fairy Ari then tries to guide the children into a lethal cave, but Colt exposes the trap. When Ari becomes trapped herself, Nancy accepts seven generations of service in exchange for helping her. Meanwhile, Jeb discovers that his system remains impaired and survives a venom-induced chain of disasters while working with Eddie and Ron. A former Imperial Enforcer hires him to eliminate the nuclear danger at Nellis. Jeb evacuates the orphanage and infiltrates the base as a supposed double agent. The Nellis commander intends to destroy an alien-held city and establish a human western territory, while also gaining power from the deaths. Before Jeb can stop the plan, armored insects erupt from a dungeon beneath the base. He recovers his equipment, helps break their advance, and removes the huge central core, but cannot yet contain it.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Jeb uses stolen gold to help seal the dungeon cores, but the outbreak proves to be cover for an alien courier to steal two compact nuclear weapons. After the central core is contained, Myers confines Jeb and continues preparing a bomber for a strike. He quietly rigs the runway to impede a nuclear launch and becomes suspicious of strange residue on murdered alien civilians. Myers then blames him when Legolas destroys a bomber. An undercover alien Enforcer hidden among Myers' staff helps Jeb escape, just as a reality storm overruns Nellis. Jeb, the spy, and a wounded heavy gunner shelter underground for two days. Afterward, Jeb extracts an ability from a transformed survivor and encounters a black-robed, systemless opponent at the monolith. His ordinary attacks fail, but a shot sent through the Fate dimension wounds the figure and forces a retreat. The stolen weapons remain with Zen, an ancient wizard who is adapting human technology for magical control and experimenting with Fate while the injury from Jeb's bullet disrupts his plans.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Jeb learns that his contract remains open because two Nellis weapons escaped before he neutralized the base. He also acquires sonic mysticism and begins studying how one type of mist might be converted into another. Casey Thompson's living creations seek help after a powerful researcher captures her and suppresses her S-ranked ability. Direct force appears hopeless, so Jeb brings advanced weapons designs, communications technology, explosives, and a dead-man switch into the captor's mountain complex. He finds one dismantled Nellis warhead and negotiates with Vex for Casey's release, offering technical knowledge in return. Vex also reveals that Jeb is four percent fairy and presses him for his appraiser ability, which Jeb refuses to trade. Their nuclear bargain leaves Jeb owing four additional warheads by the end of the month. The Emperor learns that Vex may use nuclear explosions in the Fate dimension to attack the system and then spread the method worldwide. Casey is released and a scan finds no control device, but the experience leaves her distressed. Jeb agrees to join the operation against Vex and begins hunting desert pirates for abilities.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Jeb spends the weeks before the raid gaining ability books through fairy-style bargains with stranded pirates. A dream intruder claims a family connection to him, while his experiments produce an unstable conversion from telekinetic mist into heat and light. He also learns to branch a single mist string into multiple controlled ends and gains linked bubbles that can transfer energy. Casey prepares for the assault, although her intelligent creations conceal a tracking system beneath her skin and independently consider bargaining with Vex to protect her. Ron and Eddie create an autonomous undead cyborg, but its first expedition into a prism mine draws hostility from people who recognize the corpse used to build it. Another dream reveals that an unseen fairy altered ammunition to preserve Jeb's life and that the protection carried a cost for others. In the desert, Jeb finds travelers killed by an unknown flying attacker. The killer is Myers, now far stronger and able to conceal herself through air and light. She watches Jeb but abandons an ambush when his traps demonstrate that approaching by air would be dangerous.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
By the end of the numbered story, Ron and Eddie help Jeb understand mist as a broad multidimensional spectrum, suggesting that Vex's power comes from translating among many effects with far greater practice. Casey's reconnaissance shows that Vex's dungeon extends beneath the city, so the Imperial force plans a direct breach into its central showroom. Jeb is assigned to a team charged with disabling the mist engine while other groups pursue Vex, the dungeon core, and the nuclear weapons. The courier, whose judgment and self-preservation have been altered by Vex, reports that the fifth-dimensional gate has been modified to admit a warhead safely. As the raid begins, a second dungeon starts consuming the city. Jeb recognizes it as Myers' weapon and realizes the orphanage lies near the expanding destruction. He abandons his assigned part of the raid and leaves the other Enforcers inside Vex's complex, choosing instead to return immediately and defend the children and civilians in his care.
How does it end? (ending)
After leaving the Imperial raid, Jeb reaches the orphanage evacuation too late to save Colt from Myers. He later rescues Nancy, defeats Myers, and removes her ability. Jeb, Ron, and the former sheriff enter Vex's complex through the collision of two dungeons. Vex sends a nuclear weapon into the fifth dimension, where a punitive being intervenes and Jeb is dragged through the gate with the weapon and two others. Jeb returns with his system rebooted but much of the experience missing from his memory. The weapon has vanished and may be lodged within him. Casey organizes a jailbreak, and the surviving captives escape after Vex kills Enforcers whose families did not pay. The Emperor's settlement prevents Vex from spreading the nuclear method but conceals the ransom deaths. A surviving Enforcer leaves for the east with new power and an inherited family obligation. Nancy lives with serious injuries, while Eddie and the evacuated civilians remain away from Jeb. Jeb stays responsible for the orphanage, suffers signs of a fatal flaw in Vex's accolade, and faces a system quest to kill Mab. The courier remains at large as an independent assassin.
