Apocalypse: Generic System recap

In short (whole book)

When Earth is incorporated into the System, former soldier Jebediah Trapper chooses an Impossible tutorial and loses a foot almost immediately. He survives through fairy alliances, Mist-based telekinesis, traps, and a growing partnership with Jessica, Ron, Brett, and Amanda. Their World Tortoise raid fails, but they endure the end of the safe zones, rescue Casey and her newborn, and clear a dungeon inside the fire Titan Felicia. Learning that the tutorial is a sealed loop awaiting a fatal wipe, Jeb breaks into its treasure-shipping network and sends the group back in time with ability potions. He cures Felicia, who kills the Tortoise. Higher powers preserve the resulting timeline but remove Jeb's accumulated fate, System access, and practical power. He returns to a transformed Earth, publicly denied credit while Freeman is named the winner. Smartass helps him kindle a tiny new telekinetic core. Elsewhere, Casey runs a protected tavern in an alien city, where a new threat reaches her daughter.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Earth is merged into the System, and former soldier Jebediah Trapper selects the Impossible tutorial while impaired. Transported alone to the Death Wilds, he must defeat the World Tortoise before a fourteen-day safe period ends. He invests every starting point in Mist, bargains with the Mossy-oak-in-the-clearing clan for information, and becomes their M&M-Lord. His first Krusker hunt costs him his right foot. A human party then strips him of most useful supplies, but the fairies help him recover the stolen property. As Jeb heals, his Mist develops into telekinesis. He builds a large trapping operation with fairy labor, and the returning raiders lose their leader to one of his pits. Jessica, the group's surviving assassin, joins him. Their complementary abilities let them defeat the Krusker Lord and clear the Western Woods. They later survive a scarab dungeon by combining a worm-producing lens with Jessica's low-mass movement, gaining useful equipment and a reusable scarab lens. Ron, a necromancer accompanied by four zombies, reaches the safe zone and opens negotiations for supplies and a powerful corpse. With fewer than three days remaining, Jeb and Jessica now have magical tools, a possible new ally, and no practical plan yet for killing the World Tortoise.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Jeb and Jessica clear the Southern Lakes after the Siren Mother nearly drowns him. Reaching level 20, Jeb selects Mystic Trapsmith and learns to bind conditional telekinetic actions to objects, creatures, and locations. His prepared defenses, projectiles, and explosives help the pair clear more bosses and gather equipment. They meet David's survivors and arrange for Ron's undead to support Freeman's planned assault on the World Tortoise. At the main camp, Jeb prepares emergency extraction triggers for Jessica, Ron, Brett, and Amanda. He then bombs the Tortoise's shell and poisons its defenders, drawing a vast attack toward the protection of the safe zone. The survivors gain levels from the onslaught, but Eddie blames Jeb for the danger. During the main advance, the attackers discover that the Tortoise can produce identical replacement defenders. Eddie's faction strikes Ron, causing his undead to turn feral, and Eddie critically wounds Jeb. Jessica awakens bound by a control collar but uses one of Jeb's stored attacks to free herself. Jeb survives through automatic healing, joins her, and discovers that Eddie absorbs force. They defeat him by restraint instead of impact. Amanda saves Eddie temporarily, but a delayed trap kills him after the safe zones vanish and the tutorial enters its second phase.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

With Eddie dead and the safe zones gone, Jeb salvages the former control collar and combines its components with a magical lantern. The resulting Blue Serpent Furnace can shape steel and becomes his first unique magical creation. Jessica also forms her own Mist core, which stores power as magical cloth for clothing, armor, and weapons. The group travels west to escape the growing flood of monsters released by the World Tortoise. Smartass interrupts the retreat with news that monsters are attacking the Mossy-oak-in-the-clearing clan. Jeb answers the appeal alone and finds Casey, a wounded pregnant teenager. He heals her, then defends the fairy clearing while Casey goes into accelerated labor and the fairies assist with the delivery. Casey gives birth to a daughter, and Jeb reaches level 36 while holding off the attackers. A flying creature sets the clan's oak ablaze before he can return, leaving Acorn and most of the clan unaccounted for. Jeb carries Casey and the newborn back to his companions. They shelter on a fire mountain, begin training the less developed members of the group, and name the child Casey Thompson III. Smartass survives the destruction and eventually rejoins Jeb.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Jeb and Ron develop adjustable magical weapons, including a self-powered fire wand usable by someone without Mist. Casey activates her core and summons Mike, a winged guardian. After reaching level 20, she chooses Giver of Life and animates household objects and wooden mannequins into loyal, thinking protectors. Jeb concludes that Mike is another expression of her power rather than proof of a literal angel. Jeb, Jessica, Ron, Brett, and Amanda enter the Grave of the Titan while Casey and her daughter remain outside under guard. They survive lava traps and fire creatures, with Amanda saving Brett after he is pulled into molten rock. Copper-skinned hunters follow the party back toward camp. Jeb's defensive marbles destroy many of them, then autonomous constructs enter their settlement and kill its inhabitants, including children. Amanda condemns the massacre, deepening divisions within the group. The party nevertheless presses into the dungeon and kills the creature feeding on the Titan's heart. Its death awakens the mountain as Felicia, a fire Titan. Everyone escapes, badly burned, and Felicia attacks the World Tortoise, only for it to restore itself repeatedly. Smartass explains that the Tortoise cannot be permanently killed in the present window, the tutorial is a closed spatial loop, and an approaching wipe will erase unauthorized occupants. Ordinary victory and escape are both impossible.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Jeb identifies dungeon reward portals as the only possible exit from the sealed tutorial. He dismantles a prize for its space-compression and storage components, combines them with an annihilation lens, and builds a programmable escape trap. When a reward portal opens, the device destroys the chest and launches Jeb's party, Casey's baby, and a pursuing copper-skinned war leader through the delivery route. They arrive inside the tutorial's treasure-shipping facility. Jeb kills the pursuer, seizes a control room, and demands passage to Earth. The operators reveal that Earth's land has been broken apart and distributed across another planet, eliminating its old global communications and political order. Because the facility runs on accelerated time and an enforcer is approaching, Jeb chooses a more dangerous solution. The group takes a chest containing 53 ability potions and travels back to near the tutorial's end. Jeb sabotages the other platforms so they cannot be followed safely. In the earlier timeline, the party divides the potions and the others reinforce Freeman's survivors. Jeb reopens the Titan, evacuates the copper-skinned inhabitants, and cures Felicia. She kills the World Tortoise while Jeb helps protect the remaining humans. The System declares victory, but the altered history produces escalating paradox errors, and a higher power removes the group from the scene.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Powerful entities judge whether the timeline created by Jeb's actions should survive. Their vote is tied until the deciding choice favors him. They preserve the victorious outcome as the prime branch and acknowledge completion of the Impossible tutorial, but strip Jeb of his accumulated fate and sever him from the System. Roughly a month after entering the tutorial, Jeb returns to his former motel. He still lacks a foot and can no longer draw on his previous attributes, Mist reserves, or System abilities. The surrounding Oregon wilderness has become an arid landscape with a distant city, and a public broadcast credits Freeman with winning the tutorial while suppressing Jeb's identity. Smartass remains with him under their candy agreement, although he initially cannot see her. With her instruction, Jeb begins forming a new core, perceives her again, and manages a tiny telekinetic movement before the effort overwhelms him. Casey has separately established a tavern in an alien city. Her animated mannequins staff and defend it, while Mike manages its entrance. She refuses an influential man's coercive demand and relies on her creations' independent loyalty for protection. The apparent refuge ends under threat when a disturbance is followed by her daughter's scream. Jessica, Ron, Brett, and Amanda survived the paradox intervention, but their later whereabouts remain unknown.

How does it end? (ending)

Jeb's party escapes the sealed tutorial through a reward-delivery portal and reaches its shipping facility. After learning that Earth has been fragmented and relocated, they use the facility to return to an earlier point in the tutorial with 53 ability potions. Jeb evacuates the copper-skinned inhabitants from the Titan, cures Felicia, and enables her to kill the World Tortoise while the others reinforce Freeman's survivors. The victory creates a paradox, but a tribunal preserves this outcome as the prime branch. As the price, Jeb loses his accumulated fate, his System connection, and nearly all of his power. He returns alone to his former motel on a desert-transformed Earth, still missing a foot, while a broadcast credits Freeman with the victory and suppresses Jeb's identity. Jessica, Ron, Brett, and Amanda survive the intervention, but their later locations are unknown. Smartass remains with Jeb and guides him toward rebuilding a Mist core, beginning with a minute telekinetic effort. Smartass survived the burning of the clan's oak, but Acorn and most other members of the fairy clan remain unaccounted for. Casey and her infant daughter have established a tavern in an alien city with Mike and the mannequins protecting them, but coercive interest in Impossible-tutorial survivors brings an immediate new danger to the child.
