Val Thorvald (Protagonist)

Also known as Val

Appears from the start

A half-elf contractor who investigates magical threats for the government. Val can sense magic and recover from injuries unusually quickly, and she carries the gun Fezzik and the enchanted sword Chopper. She works with Sindari while tracking abducted children to a dragon's lair.

Sindari (Supporting)

Also known as Sindari Dargoth Chaser the Third

Appears from the start

Val's telepathic silver tiger ally, who reaches Earth through a figurine she carries. He helps her confront kobolds and search for four missing children. A hostile spell abruptly expels him from Earth during the pursuit, and Val has difficulty summoning him again.

Silver dragon (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

An enormous silver dragon whose presence is detected near the windmill where kidnapped children are held. He has forced kobolds to gather victims and supplies, and his scheme places the captives in immediate danger. His name is not known to Val when she first encounters his operation.

Willard (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

Val's Army supervisor and government contact. Willard receives Val's report on the rescued children and the new dragon threat.

Nin (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A magical-weapons craftswoman and food-truck owner whose gnome grandfather trained under a dwarf master smith. Two rival dealers have vandalized her truck and ordered her out of the weapons trade, prompting her to ask Val to assess their threats and supposed dragon-slaying merchandise.

Dimitri (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

Val's quarter-dwarf ally and a tenant of her mother. Dimitri makes enchanted security art, including an armed cactus he gives Nin, and has begun selling some of Zoltan's goods at a farmers market. His practical inventions make him useful to Val and Nin.

The Pardis brothers (Antagonist)

Also known as panther-shifter weapons dealers

First appears in chapter 6

Brothers who sell magical weapons and threaten Nin's business. They demand that competing dealers either submit to them or leave Seattle. When Val visits their home, they attack her and reveal themselves as panther shifters.

Zoltan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A vampire alchemist with expertise in magical signatures and dark-elf languages. He identifies the local enchanter behind ammunition taken from the Pardis brothers and agrees to research pages from a dark-elf notebook, although he and Val have not yet settled his price.

Dob (Antagonist)

Also known as the silver dragon

First appears in chapter 11

Dob is revealed as the dragon behind the child abductions. His plan was designed to bring Zav to Earth. Zav says he comes from a rival family and is masking his presence with a magical object.

Zavryd (Supporting)

Also known as Zav, Lord Zav, Zavryd'nokquetal

First appears in chapter 11

A black dragon who serves the Dragon Justice Court on Earth. Zav confirms that Dob belongs to a rival family and is concealing his aura. After healing Val, he bargains for her help locating Dob and promises assistance with the Pardis brothers under limits Val places on his mental powers.

Refugee elf (Minor)

First appears in chapter 14

An elf sheltering with other refugees who once accompanied Val's father on diplomatic travels. He confirms that Val's father survives in a remote court, while warning that he cannot judge whether Val is known or would be welcomed there.

Lava golem (Minor)

First appears in chapter 14

An earth-linked magical being whom Val and Zav consult while searching for Dob. It draws likely cave sites from the land's memory and conveys their locations to Val, turning a broad area east of Duvall into specific places to investigate.

Female dark elf (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 16

A hostile magical operative who intervenes during the attack on Nin's food truck. She assaults Val's mind, impedes bullets, and helps a hired shifter escape. Her threats connect the dark elves' broader campaign to the violence directed at Val and Nin.

Inga (Minor)

First appears in chapter 17

A very tall metalworker at Seppes Fencing who can enchant manufactured goods. She formerly supplied enchanted work to the Northern Pride, but stopped after the group withheld payment and replaced her with a cheaper source. She discusses the Pride's ammunition operation with Val.

Martina (Minor)

First appears in chapter 17

The receptionist at Seppes Fencing. She accepts Val's bribes and provides an informal tour of the facility, helping Val reach the metalworker who previously enchanted goods for the Northern Pride and advance the search for the dealers' new supplier.

Mary (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

Val's therapist, who understands that unpredictable magical assignments are harming Val's sleep and general health. When Val considers approaching her estranged family during an upcoming trip, Mary advises making contact before attempting an in-person reunion.

Thad (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

Val's former husband and Amber's father. He is planning a trip to Idaho with Amber, creating a possible opportunity for Val to reconnect with the family she has avoided for years. Val remains uncertain whether either of them would welcome contact.

Amber (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

The estranged daughter of Val and Thad. Amber has had no contact with Val for years and is preparing to travel to Idaho with her father. The trip forces Val to consider whether and how to reopen a relationship despite her fear of rejection.

Goblin work leader (Minor)

First appears in chapter 21

A local goblin representative who points Val and Zav toward the Tolt Water Treatment Facility after repeated sightings of Dob there. A goblin team has vanished, and the leader also reports that Dob brought a human captive into the site.

Enslaved dwarf (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 27

An enslaved dwarf held beneath the Pardis home and forced to enchant ammunition. He is semiconscious, repeatedly working under magical control, and chained to a system that violently repels rescue attempts. Val believes freeing him could stop the dealers' weapons operation.
