In short (whole book)
Government contractor Val Thorvald rescues four children from Dob, a silver dragon using them to lure his rival Zav to Earth. While tracking Dob, she also investigates the Pardis brothers, panther-shifter weapons dealers terrorizing her friend Nin. Val and Zav locate Dob's base, but he escapes after coercing Val and badly injuring Zav. Val then infiltrates the Pardis operation, discovers an enslaved dwarf making enchanted ammunition, and destroys a dark-elf device meant to control captives. Zav arrives as Dob corners her. During their battle, Dob orders Val to kill Zav, but she resists and kills Dob with Chopper instead. The dwarf is freed and Nin's attackers lose their base, while Zav refuses to report Val despite condemning her choice. Dob's corpse later disappears, leaving Val vulnerable to Dragon Justice Court scrutiny, and evidence of a wider dark-elf weapons scheme remains under investigation.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Val Thorvald, a half-elf with a talent for sensing magic, works as a government contractor against supernatural threats. She relies on the enchanted sword Chopper, the firearm Fezzik, and Sindari, a telepathic silver tiger summoned through a figurine. Willard directs her official work. Val's circle also includes Nin, a magical-weapons maker; Dimitri, a quarter-dwarf creator of enchanted art; and Zoltan, a vampire alchemist. Zavryd, usually called Zav, is a dragon serving the Dragon Justice Court on Earth. Val has also acquired pages from a dark-elf notebook whose purpose has not yet been determined.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Val investigates missing children and livestock at an orchard, where kobolds ambush her and hostile magic ejects Sindari from Earth. At a nearby windmill, Chopper breaks the compulsion controlling the kobolds. Val finds a murdered ranger and rescues four starving children from the basement while Sindari distracts an enormous silver dragon. The dragon burns the windmill but pauses to explain that the abductions were bait intended to bring Zav to Earth. It threatens Val unless she delivers a warning, then heads toward Seattle. After confirming the children escaped, Val reports to Willard. Nin asks for help with two rival magical-weapons dealers who have vandalized her food truck and ordered her out of the trade. The dealers claim to offer dragon-slaying weapons, and Val agrees to investigate. Dimitri gives Nin an enchanted security device and reveals that he has begun selling some of Zoltan's products.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Val confronts the Pardis brothers at their home and learns they are panther shifters. She escapes their attack with enchanted cartridges and hears a private plea from someone imprisoned beneath the house. The brothers answer her intrusion with a legal complaint and an attempted bombing of her yoga class. Zoltan traces their ammunition to a local enchanter and begins researching Val's dark-elf pages. Meanwhile, the silver dragon reaches Seattle. Zav identifies him as Dob, a rival concealing his presence with an artifact. Dob has come to challenge Zav and has used the kidnapped children to draw him out. After healing Val, Zav proposes an exchange: Val will help locate Dob, and Zav will help stop the Pardis brothers. Val accepts only after securing temporary limits on Zav's use of compulsion and mind reading, although he insists that she accompany him when they confront Dob.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Val maps disappearances to narrow the search for Dob, while Nin explains that her food-truck business is essential to bringing her family to America. Armed orcs attack them for a Northern Pride bounty, and Zav heals Val after she is shot. At a refuge near Paulina Lake, an elf who once traveled with Val's father confirms that he is alive in a distant elven court. A lava golem identifies caves that may hide Dob, but Zav leaves temporarily to address a family crisis. Val then finds her apartment searched and trapped by a dark elf seeking the stolen notebook. Before she can follow that threat, attackers set Nin's truck on fire inside a magically isolated yard. Val records a shifter admitting that the Pardis brothers paid for the attack. A female dark elf uses mental magic to help the assailants escape, openly linking the two hostile groups. Nin survives and promises to make Val lightweight magical armor, while Dimitri offers to repair the truck.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Val confirms that the Northern Pride replaced its former ammunition enchanter, but the captive presence below the Pardis home remains unexplained. Willard assigns her to locate, tag, or kill Dob after he is linked to fatal attacks. At the same time, Val considers contacting Thad and Amber after years of estrangement. Her forest search fails to find Dob, though helping goblins against poachers begins to challenge her violent reputation among magical communities. Zav joins the search and argues that Val needs formal training to develop her limited magical abilities. A goblin leader directs them to the Tolt Water Treatment Facility, where Dob has carried captives and may have killed a missing work team. They also realize that a black onyx embedded in Dob's chest probably hides his aura. Val and Zav decide to investigate the suspected base.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
At the treatment facility, Zav starts freeing three captives while Dob penetrates Val's magical concealment and compels her into a side room. Dob reveals his elf-like form, shows that the black onyx is one of his protective tools, and forces Val to act as bait in an ambush. Zav recognizes the coercion and breaks it when Dob attacks. The dragons fight in humanoid and dragon forms while Val's gun proves ineffective. Chopper can wound Dob, and Zav tears the onyx from his chest, ending his ability to hide his aura. Dob retaliates with a mental assault and a prepared magical trap. He escapes wounded, but the trap leaves Zav severely injured. Zav returns to his realm for treatment after explaining that dragon law requires Dob's capture rather than execution. Dob remains dangerous and has threatened Val, while Zav's absence leaves her to address the Pardis brothers without his promised aid.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Val organizes an assault on the Pardis home with Sindari, Dimitri, hired werewolves, and a gas weapon from Zoltan. Beneath the house she finds a dwarf chained to a system that forces him to enchant ammunition. A coercive dark-elf prototype orb is nearby, separate from a control box built to manage multiple captives, and Dob has arrived seeking a weapon that can kill Zav. Val destroys the control equipment and orb, collapses the underground chambers, and breaks the dwarf's chain. After Val fights the remaining shifters, Dob traps her, but Zav arrives and attacks him. Val pulls the dwarf from the rubble and learns that he was kidnapped and sold away from his family. He also recognizes Chopper as the work of an ancient dwarven master. During the dragons' destructive battle, Dob compels Val to kill Zav. She resists and kills Dob with Chopper. Zav refuses to report her but condemns the killing because he intended court judgment and rehabilitation. Willard later receives the translated dark-elf instructions for poisonous pleasure devices. Nin continues making Val's armor, and Dob's body disappears from government custody, leaving possible Dragon Justice Court consequences unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Val destroys the Pardis brothers' underground operation and breaks the chain controlling the kidnapped dwarf, though he remains weak and stranded far from his family. When Dob tries to make Val kill Zav, she resists the command and kills Dob with Chopper. Zav had intended to take Dob before the Dragon Justice Court, so he condemns Val's action but chooses not to implicate her. He departs injured and angry, leaving their relationship damaged. Willard pays Val for the assignment and takes custody of the translated dark-elf material, which describes poisonous pleasure orbs and related devices. Dob's body vanishes from government storage before it can be examined, raising the possibility of magical retrieval and future court attention. Nin continues making protective armor for Val, Dimitri leaves for work in Bend, and Sindari remains Val's ally. The dark-elf operation, Chopper's ownership, the rescued dwarf's future, Val's absent father, and her estrangement from Thad and Amber all remain unresolved.
