Previously: born Unsouled and scorned in the isolated land of Sacred Valley, Lindon was shown by the powerful Suriel how small and doomed his home was, and he set out to grow strong enough to matter. He left the valley with the sword artist Yerin, whose late master left her a dangerous blood-madra inheritance, and the two entered a wider world far ahead of anything they had known. On the frontier they learned how far behind they were, and Lindon took up the craft of soulsmithing under Fisher Gesha. They drew the attention of Eithan Arelius, the eccentric and startlingly powerful head of the Arelius family, who took them under his wing, and they made a lasting enemy of the masked spear artist Jai Long. Amid a contest over the treasure-filled Transcendent Ruins they came through changed and stronger, and by the second book's end were firmly established under Eithan's patronage, ready to press deeper into the powerful realm beyond the frontier.
