Erin (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
The innkeeper of the Wandering Inn outside Liscor, where Goblins and members of several species can find protection and meet on uncertain common ground. Her hospitality repeatedly draws her into the city's disputes and makes the inn more than an ordinary business.
Lyonette (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The inn's practical manager and Mrsha's guardian. She organizes its staff, household, and daily security while building a life apart from the royal identity she once knew. Her sense of order complements Erin's more instinctive way of handling guests and crises.
Mrsha (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A young white-furred Gnoll who lives at the Wandering Inn under Erin and Lyonette's care. She is part of the household they are trying to protect while floods, dungeon activity, and hostility toward the inn make ordinary life increasingly difficult.
Pawn (Supporting)
Appears from the start
An individual Antinium who leads Painted Soldiers and newly individual Workers. He is trying to give both groups purpose beyond their assigned duties, and to find voluntary activities that can unite Antinium whose training and daily responsibilities are very different.
Purple Smile (Minor)
First appears in chapter 5
One of Pawn's Antinium sergeants, responsible for chess and other activities among the individual Workers. He communicates largely through gestures and helps guide a group that is only beginning to develop preferences, friendships, and recreation of its own.
Yellow Splatters (Minor)
First appears in chapter 5
A Painted Antinium sergeant who helps train the soldiers under Pawn’s command.
Klbkch (Supporting)

A senior Liscor guardsman and the Free Antinium's revelantor, balancing his obligations to the city with the needs of his Hive. His authority crosses the uneasy boundary between Liscor and the Antinium beneath it, especially when dungeon access becomes contested.
Bird (Supporting)
Appears from the start
An independent Antinium Hunter employed at Erin's inn as a guard and bird hunter. He earns wages, owns personal belongings, and follows interests that differ sharply from the obedience expected by the Hive. Erin's protection allows that individuality to continue.
Free Queen (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
The ruler of Liscor's Free Antinium, directing thousands through a mental network while testing whether genuine individuals can strengthen her Hive. She and Klbkch have pursued Antinium individuality for years, but she still measures each new person against the Hive's survival.
Laken Godart (Protagonist)
Also known as Emperor of the Unseen Empire
Appears from the start
The blind ruler of River Farm and Durene's partner. He is building an engineering-centered realm called the Unseen Empire.
Wiscaria (Supporting)

Laken's witch and general, entrusted with covert military work as danger approaches the Unseen Empire. She leaves River Farm with part of its forces for a concealed operation, supported by message magic and an urgently prepared alchemical weapon.
Sacra (Supporting)
Also known as Oddveig
Appears from the start
Magnolia Reinhart's spy, formerly known to Wiscaria as Oddveig. She approaches Laken Godart with Magnolia's offer of recognition, support, and peace in exchange for temporarily withholding his trebuchets and their construction secrets.
Rags (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
Chieftain of the Flooded Waters tribe, commanding a mixed Goblin force that includes Redfang riders.
Pyrite (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Rags's experienced Hobgoblin second-in-command and a seasoned organizer within the Flooded Waters tribe.
Red Scar (Supporting)
Also known as Redscar
First appears in chapter 3
A leader among the Redfang riders serving the Flooded Waters tribe. He accepts Rags's command while his warriors still remember their former chieftain, Garen Redfang. His loyalty gives Rags authority over an elite force with its own history and identity.
Lady Bethel (Minor)
First appears in chapter 2
A noblewoman held with her travelling party by the Flooded Waters tribe after earlier fighting against Goblins. She recognizes that Rags is willing to take prisoners and negotiate, and offers ransom, protection, and safe passage in return for the people the tribe holds.
Garen Redfang (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
An independent Redfang chieftain who joins Tremborag in rejecting the Goblin Lord's demand that their tribes submit to him. He sees the Goblin Lord's reliance on a human master as another form of enslavement and is prepared to resist a much larger army.
Tremborag (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
The immense leader of the Mountain City Goblins, defending his stronghold alongside Garen Redfang against the Goblin Lord. His mountain fortress has prepared passages and choke points, and his own body can transform into a more powerful fighting form.
Rhys (Antagonist)
Also known as Goblin Lord
Appears from the start
An undead-backed Goblin war leader whose army is blamed for Zel Shivertail's death and remains a major threat. He commands disciplined Goblins and undead in a campaign that is drawing the attention of Liscor, northern armies, and rival Goblin chieftains.
Calruz (Supporting)
